State Regent’s Message
Dear Arkansas Daughters,
Thank you for the privilege of serving our organization as your State Regent. I will do my best to always repre-sent DAR and you in a positive and professional man-ner. Along the way, I think we can have some fun and master the goals we have set for this year. The 125th Continental Congress was a wonderful experience. Receiving the sash on Sunday morning from our outgoing State Regent Mary Deere was a spe-cial honor. It was my pleasure to place the Honorary State Regent sash on Mary and to receive the oath of office alongside our State Vice-Regent Junelle Mongno. Several members of my family were able to attend Con-gress for the first time, and I appreciate your thoughtful-ness towards them.
Arkansas members attended luncheons celebrating Junior Membership, the 50 Year
Club, Veterans, and the DAR Schools. We celebrated America with a final grand total of 14,383,078 hours of service to our country from Daughters all over the USA! This idea of national
service will be continued as part of the Service to America campaign.
We broke the Guinness Book of World Records by collecting 100,904 letters to send to veterans – the most ever collected in one month to send to military personnel. Our goal was 10,000 – we passed it by 90,000! It was thrilling to watch that counter keep edging up and up until we hit that record number!

Arkansas was well represented by our Outstanding Junior, Kristie Pope Kennedy. We are so
proud of her. We were honored to stand for our Regent Mary Deere as she presented her final state report to the Congress. During the Memorial Service on Sunday morning, Arkansas saluted our
Honorary State Regent Louise Kellogg, who passed away in October of 2015. Known as our own “Special K,” Louise was state regent from 1994 -1996 and Vice President General from 1996 -1999.
Our new NSDAR administration was installed and with that they bring lots of new ideas and
plans for strengthening our organization. I hope you will find a project to support and enthusiastical-ly join in the activities at the local, state, and national levels. There is much for us to learn and share.
The following national appointments were announced:
-- Gretchen Magee, American Heritage, Literature and Drama, National Vice Chair
-- Junelle Mongno, DAR Project Patriot, Division Vice Chair, South Central Division
-- Mary Deere, DAR Scholarship, National Vice Chair, Margaret Howard Hamilton Scholarship
-- Sue T. Thompson, Genealogical Records, National Chair
It was my pleasure to attend the Wataseka and Osage District meetings in July. I got to visit
with state Daughters and install their new officers. I look forward to visits with other chapters and districts in our state. Please contact me if you would like for me to come and visit your chapter.
My project for 2016-2018 is the DAR Room. The room is located at the Old State House in Little Rock. It is a wonderful example of an 18th century period room. ASDAR has had a relationship
with the Old State House since approximately 1908. We were approved for our space there in the
early 1950s, and our commitment remains strong. I want to build the sustaining funds that support this important piece of history as a part of my “fanning the flames of history” theme.
Thank you for your encouragement and support of DAR.
In DAR Service, Jerrie Jones Townsend

The admission of fifty-one new members, along with several new members by transfer and a
number of reinstated members since February of this year, shows that Arkansas chapter regis-
trars are hard at work. Many thanks to these ladies and to the officers and other members of their
chapter who support them. Arkansas has thirty-eight members pending with five of these verified
for the August board. The most interesting fact I noticed in the monthly reports is the reactivation
of two members after more than fifty years of inactivity. Gilbert Marshall Chapter reinstated a
member after fifty-four years. These are results from working the list of inactive members.
The best part about genealogy
is searching for ancestors
and finding friends.

Within our chapters Grand Prairie
Personal care items from members of the Grand Prairie Chapter were presented to
the Voluntary Services Department at the Eugene Tobin Veterans Administration
Medical Center in North Little Rock. Chapter members Glennda Fread and Allison
Holland delivered the items to VA representative Sharon Carlisle June 29. In the
letter of thanks from Voluntary Service Chief Michael Dobbs, he said, "Without your
support we could not provide for the smaller niceties that make hospitalization more
bearable. Your thoughtfulness also reflects the concern and compassion that our
community feels for our veterans."
The Grand Prairie Chapter celebrat-
ed the 240th birthday of Independ-
ence Day with a display at the
Stuttgart Public Library. Other dis-
plays featuring commemorative
events sponsored by the chapter
included Constitution Week, Veter-
ans Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas,
President's Day, Memorial Day &
Flag Day.

Hosts Caddo District Flag Day Meeting With Continental Congress quickly approaching the Caddo District Flag Day meeting’s date was changed to an earlier date of
June 10th instead of June 14th. Special guests included Arkansas State Regent Mary Love Deere and Arkansas State Regent
Elect Jerrie Townsend. District Director Susan P. Veal did a marvelous job presiding. All chapters were represented with a total of
seventy-two members. Everyone enjoyed a catered buffet provided by the Higdon Ferry Café as they dined at the First Assembly
of God Church on Central Avenue in Hot Springs.
Seven “Angel Voices” were provided as contribution to the Arkansas Freedom Fund. District members also contributed to the let-
ters for our active military men and women, which helped to earn NSDAR’s place in the Guinness Book of World Records. State
Regent Elect’s project will be the DAR Room at the Old State House in Little Rock and the note cards were available for purchase.

Chapter Regent Linda Jester and ASDAR Regent Mary Deere

Koon, Rita Byram, Nena Butler, Karen Wacaster, Carol Smith,

Special assis-
tance was provid-
ed by Girl Scout Troop 6513. Five of their members serve drinks and wait-
ressed tables so that they could earn a community service badge. Taking a
photo op with ASDAR Regent Mary Deere and District Director Susan P.
Veal were the Girl Scouts (L-R): Cadet Mahala Rye, Brownie Nina Fry, Jun-
iors Olivia Rye and Ayala Bishop, and Cadet Sydney Slaughter standing
behind. Everyone was thrilled by them being there and doing such a great
job. The girls also enjoyed their experience.
Mrs. Deere gave the last program of her tenure as Arkansas State Regent.
