gallery curator, Gayle Paul, to
discuss a possible 2014 TAA
Open Show at the Portsmouth
Art and Cultural Center again
and what formats and themes
to be considered for it as well.
The winners of $1300.00 in
cash awards, and also the
Honorable Mentions for the
“Creative Variations” show
are listed on the Kudos (page
2) below, and includes some
current TAA Members &new
ones too !
And if you have not been able
to see this show so far, please
take some time to see the very
exceptional number of new
works on display, as there is
something for every art lover’s
taste in paintings, sculptures,
and creative photographs too,
and it continues there through
May 27th
2013!
I personally liked the 2nd
Place
Award sculpture by Akiko
Tanaka, who made an
unusually - shaped and very
expressive piece of work, and I
rarely have seen such a creative
work as that one ! And I am
not usually drawn to clay
sculptures, unless it is by either
TAA’s John Tobin or Lesley
Hildreth, who always seem to
make something interesting to
both look at and to purchase
too!
President’s Letter
April 2013
Hello TAA members,
This month our Members
General Meeting will
discuss some ideas for future
TAA shows, and we need a
volunteer host for the
Annual TAA “End-of-
Year” Party in June 2013 !
The “Opening Night” for
our “Creative Variations”
juried TAA Miniature
Exhibition Show that
opened on Friday evening,
March 1st, 2013 was a huge
success, and Gayle Paul, the
curator of the Portsmouth Art
and Cultural Center was very
pleased with the quality and
variety of the selected works!
This TAA “Open Show” was
also a financial success for
TAA, even though we had
the largest amount of prize
money awarded to the artists
in the show, and much of the
credit for it’s success is
because our show chair,
Barbara Henning –Loomis,
TAA’s 2nd
Vice President,
thought TAA needed to reach
out to more non-TAA artist
members to enter our show,
and also to make some new
TAA members in the entry
process, and it worked out
very well! Thanks, Barb!
And later this month, she
will meet again with the
Tidewater Art Alliance for Visual Artists Non-profit organization
The “Creative Variations”
show “Opening Night” photos
are on pages 5 & 6 below, and
you will recognize many TAA
Members in the photos taken by
TAA 1st V.P. Al Benas, and
myself that capture the energy
of that special opening night !
Sincerely,
Ray
Below is another famous artist
quote to ponder as we all are
continuing our knowledge of art,
and learning new creative
techniques, to making better and
more expressive art to share
with ourselves, friends, family,
and society too.
“The beautiful is in nature, and
it is encountered under the
most diverse forms of reality.
Once it is found, it belongs to
Art, or rather the artist who
discovers it!

“ The Working South : Mary Whyte”
From Saturday April 6th – Friday, May 17th 2013 Free Admission to PFAC Members, $10.00 for Non-Members
The Working South reveals an intimate portrayal of the workers left behind by so-called progress and outsourcing: cotton pickers, wooden boat builders, textile mill workers, crabbers, shrimpers, the shoe shine man, and so on. Traveling the South for three and a half years, artist Mary Whyte, who lives in Charleston, South Carolina, interviewed and painted dozens of people in various industries that are quickly vanishing or dramatically changing. Through the challenging medium of watercolor, Whyte has taken the unseen and given them a face we cannot easily forget. The exhibition will include 30 major watercolors, 20 accompanying watercolor studies, and a selection of the artist’s sketchbooks. The Peninsula Fine Arts Center is the final stop on the tour that included the Morris Museum of Art, Gibbes Museum of Art and
Telfair Museum of Art.

You can help the Arts in Virginia—Here’s how!!
Virginians now have the opportunity to contribute part of
their state income tax refund to the Virginia Arts Foundation by checking a box on their return form. It’s never been so simple to support the arts in Virginia.
Because the foundation may receive but not solicit private funds, money will have to come from the purchase of arts license plate and other special sources, such as this tax check off box.
The interest on all funds received will be distributed in grants by the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Please help support the arts in Virginia. Check off a contribution for the Virginia Arts Foundation on your state income return. It’s one of the most important checks you can write – and now, it’s one of the easiest.

Note : New email address for submitting items for the TAA Artline : Please be sure to include “Artline” in the subject line of your message! (...unless you want your message to get lost in the tons
of email your editor receives every day.) If your message doesn’t say “Artline” it might get rejected as trash! Each photo needs its own caption, in its own email. Please send each photo, properly captioned, in a separate email. Use
another email for each additional photo, along with its caption. That way your Editor won’t get photos mixed up with the wrong caption. Please limit file size to about 1megabyte per photo. Please write a full sentence, identifying the principal people or art pieces in the photo, with an explanation
