Guiding Questions• Why are we here?• What is cloud

computing?• Why does it

matter?• What are its

benefits?• What business

goals can it enhance?

• Are there risks to cloud computing?

Why are we here?• We’ve all heard the term cloud

computing and are wondering if it can benefit our business.

• enCompass has developed roadmaps for new and existing clients for the smart adaptation of cloud computing and has learned a thing or two along the way, and we want to share our knowledge with you.

8

In November 2011 according to a KPMG survey, around 81% of executives surveyed said that their companies were either evaluating cloud services, planning a cloud implementation, or had already implemented a cloud strategy.

Page 9: April 2012 Breakfast & Learn Event: Leveraging Cloud Computing for Maximum Value

First though, what is cloud computing?

A general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the internet. Categorized:

1. Software-as-a-Service (SaaS)

2. Platform-as-a-Service (Paas)

3. Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS)

Inspired by the obligatory puffy cloud we’ve been drawing for years.

9

Here it is. The

“cloud”.

Broad Categorization of Cloud Types

Broad Categorization of Cloud Types

• Software-as-a-Service (SaaS): Most popular. Subscription based software (on-demand). Think Salesforce.com. Most of this morning will focus here.

• Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS): Cloud-based or hosted platform environment on which to develop completely custom software.

• Infrastructure-as-a-Service (Iaas): Host your own equipment at a managed datacenter.

11

Let’s try this again.

A SaaS Comparison

14

Feature Traditional Client/Server

Cloud-Based Software Delivery

Hardware Need to deploy your own server and database environment per software specifications.

No core hardware needed (servers, tape backup unit or backup drives)

Software Software needs to be installed on each machine accessing the system.

Sometimes software is needed but oftentimes software is made available securely through any web browser.

Remote Accessibility

With additional hardware and/or softare (VPN, terminal server, etc.)

Inherent in public cloud offerings, can be customized with hybrid and private clouds.

Security & Backups

Need to concern yourself with the securitization of the environment as well as how data is protected.

SaaS providers maintain all security and backups. Some more complicated environments require a joint effort for securitization. Backups are usually handled through the provider though.

Bottom Line Benefit

You can focus more on the smart adaptation and value derived from software instead of just getting it deployed.

Public, Private and Hybrid Clouds• A public cloud service includes most

SaaS models. It has low barriers to entry combined with the least flexibility and customization possibilities.

• A private cloud is more costly but solves many company’s security concerns, especially if they’re highly regulated.

• A hybrid cloud combines the best of both worlds. Uses shared resources of public cloud offerings and private (or internal) resources where needed either from a security, feasibility, or customization requirement.

Business Goals

17

Here are some common business goals that cloud computing can enhance… let’s explore how.

• Reduce Cost

• Introduce New Functionality & Efficiency

• Improve Accessibility

• Be More Disaster Resistant

Page 18: April 2012 Breakfast & Learn Event: Leveraging Cloud Computing for Maximum Value

Reduce Cost

• Cloud services have a lower price point of entry.

• Cloud services require less internal infrastructure and thus less operational expense to operate (server maintenance and support, energy, hardware costs, service plans, and on and on).

• Scalability without complications; let others worry about it.

• Example Route: convert from a traditional client/server environment to a SaaS model.

18

The most common reason clients engage us on cloud computing – reduce cost or achieve more with less.

Page 19: April 2012 Breakfast & Learn Event: Leveraging Cloud Computing for Maximum Value

Cost / Control Continuum

Generally speaking, as with most things in life, the less something costs the less control you have over that thing. Conversely, the opposite is true. When thinking about the cloud, control often times correlates with security or a company’s risk tolerance.

19

Along the line of reduced cost, remember to consider the traditional cost vs. control continuum.

Cost Control

Page 20: April 2012 Breakfast & Learn Event: Leveraging Cloud Computing for Maximum Value

Introduce New Functionality & Efficiency

• Cloud services oftentimes offer a cost-per-user or pay-as-you-go model for software or platforms that used to require significant investment.

• Different size companies can benefit. Small companies may have not been able to afford a mail and collaboration platform but can now. Mid-sized companies may have stretched to afford a CRM system but can easily afford a cloud-based solution. Even ERP packages are moving to cloud-based models with varying entry-points.

• Many industry-specific applications are now offering hosted models.

20

Many companies can now introduce technology solutions that were at one time cost prohibitive.

Page 21: April 2012 Breakfast & Learn Event: Leveraging Cloud Computing for Maximum Value

Examples…

21

Page 22: April 2012 Breakfast & Learn Event: Leveraging Cloud Computing for Maximum Value

Improve Accessibility

• Smartphones and tablets are changing the way we work.

• Most services are web-based.

• Cloud-based offerings (especially public cloud offerings) oftentimes have an iPhone or Android app available as well as tablet operating systems too.

22

More and more organizations are demanding that their software tools work where they do – in the office, at home, and on the road.

Page 23: April 2012 Breakfast & Learn Event: Leveraging Cloud Computing for Maximum Value

Be More Disaster Resistant

• Cloud-based software delivery models leave the disaster preparedness planning to the professionals (as long as the cloud service is reputable and offers a written SLA)

• Many companies are replacing their aging tape-based or hard drive-based backups solutions with cloud-based solutions.

• Some cloud-based solutions even integrate environment mirroring features using virtualization technology.

23

Some companies are integrating cloud solutions into their disaster preparedness strategy.

Page 24: April 2012 Breakfast & Learn Event: Leveraging Cloud Computing for Maximum Value

Is cloud-computing all sunshine and lollipops?

• Cost vs. Control continuum• Storage of your confidential information will

reside in the cloud (a datacenter, hosting provider, or other third party) instead of on your local network.

• It’s important to consider the securitization of your data.

• Partner only with reputable providers, consider other companies on their solutions.

• Make sure your contract balances responsibility and clearly spells out steps taken to ensure the confidentiality of your data. Seek a professional if in doubt.

24

It sounds like there are many benefits to cloud-computing. Are there any downsides?

• Hosted Microsoft Exchange solution for a northeast Ohio marketing firm.

• enCompass Recovery Cloud services for (now) five of our AutoPilot clients.

• Cloud services for non-profits 501(c)3s. Limitations.
