Why Aperture?

But You Hate Aperture?

• If you follow me on Twitter, you will have seen me complain about Aperture many times

• However, there is one key reason why Aperture remains my digital photography tool of choice

Page 12: Aperture 3 workflow

The Best Reason!

• Suits photographers who choose digital photography over digital image manipulation

Page 13: Aperture 3 workflow

What Does That Mean?

• Designed to store many thousands of images (like shoeboxes with negatives in them)

• Pioneered non-destructive editing(like re-printing from a negative)

• Editing tools adjust images, not manipulate(but you can use Photoshop if you need to)

• I feel like a photographer(and not like a Photoshopper)

Feeding Aperture

• Aperture is like your cat - it exists to be worshipped

• Like your cat, it will ignore you when it feels unloved

• Spinning Beachball of Death (SBOD) is Aperture’s constant companion :(

• Investing in the right hardware really helps Aperture feel worshipped

Feeding Aperture

• Aperture loves RAM

• Even more than it loves CPU!

• 4GB of RAM really helps

• I find it painful with just 2GB of RAM

• Aperture hits disks hard

• Shooting JPEG instead of RAW helps a little

• Fast disks help a lot, RAID 0 helps even more

• Firewire 800 helps more than USB for external drive connections

Feed Aperture Well ...

• ... and it will reward you with a great environment for your photography

• ... and you will spend more time being creative and less time being a computer operator

• ... and your workflow will help rather than hinder your enjoyment

Why Do We Need A Workflow?

Page 33: Aperture 3 workflow

Stuart Herbert - http://blog.stuartherbert.com/photography/Aperture 3 Workflow

Why A Workflow At All

• A route map from camera to browser

• Make sure nothing is missed along the way!

• Repeatable results help with quality

• Saves time with practice

Get It Close In-Camera

• Your original photo is your raw material

• The higher quality the raw material, the better the final result

• The very best photos need no post-processing at all

Technical Basics

• Keep your lenses clean

• Keep your camera sensor clean

• Check your histograms for highlights

• Don’t let your shutter speed drop too low

My Choices

• Aperture priority (shutter priority for HDR)

• Bracket 3 shots to deal with highlights

• -1/3 ev exposure compensation on DSLRs (does interesting things to colours)

• Fast glass to allow shallow depth of field

Final Words On Shooting

• Shooting on digital is cheap

• So don’t be afraid to take many shots of the same subject in different ways

• You can always delete them if they suck

• But don’t delete them until you’re back at the computer if possible

Stack Your Bracketed Shots

Page 82: Aperture 3 workflow

Stuart Herbert - http://blog.stuartherbert.com/photography/Aperture 3 Workflow

Stacking

• If you bracket, you should stack

• If you shoot panoramas, you should stack

• Keeps the filmstrip uncluttered later on

• I don’t stack similar shots - I think of similar shots as separate images

Using The Loupe

• The loupe allows you to inspect up close

• ~ key toggles loupe on and off

My Approach To Adjustments

• Broken into two types of preset

• Per-camera body attempt to mimic same effect using settings appropriate for that body

• ‘Moods’ apply same effect regardless of camera body

• Speedy and effective, but YMMV

5. Filter Again

Page 207: Aperture 3 workflow

Stuart Herbert - http://blog.stuartherbert.com/photography/Aperture 3 Workflow

Filter Again

• Do you want to publish every photo that you have processed?

• The key to quality is to be utterly ruthless now

• Less photos (but higher quality) always always always beats more photos (but lower quality)

• In turn, this will drive up the quality of your original photos over time

How To Filter Again

• Set the filmstrip / browser to filter for 4 stars or better

• Pick the ones you really want to publish, and mark them as 5 stars

• Rinse and repeat until you are happy

• If in doubt, leave a photo at 4 stars

• ... you can go back to each photo and try a different look

• ... and you can go back to your unrated photos to see if any of those are worth reconsidering

• ... keep tinkering and filtering until you are sure that you have your final set of shots

Keywording

• Helps people find your photos online

• Helps you search a large archive of photos in future years :)

• Tag each photo with keywords to capture its unique elements next

• Keywording is slow and boring, but worth the effort on the right photos

Blogging On Wordpress

• Bulk of the article are the words already written for the photos on Flickr

• I add a short introduction that’s unique to the blog

• I used to write extra sections, but these detracted from the photography

Embedding Medium Images From Flickr

Page 252: Aperture 3 workflow

Stuart Herbert - http://blog.stuartherbert.com/photography/Aperture 3 Workflow

Embedding Photos

• By far the best way is to cut-and-paste the link from the ‘medium’ size photo on Flickr

• Takes a bit of time, but once done never breaks

• I used to use Wordpress plugins to do this, but they broke when I upgraded Wordpress

• Am in the process of going through my old articles and fixing all the missing images :(

8. Review

Page 274: Aperture 3 workflow

Stuart Herbert - http://blog.stuartherbert.com/photography/Aperture 3 Workflow

Why Review?

• Photos look different on different computer screens

• You might change your mind after seeing the photo published on Flickr or your blog

• Also an opportunity to enjoy your final work :)

Where I Review

• Desktop monitor at home (it has great colour)

• Desktop monitor at work (it has crappy colour, like nearly all flat-panel monitors do)

• iPhone & iPad screen (vibrancy and saturation look different on these)

• Where would be appropriate for you?

Summing Up

Page 282: Aperture 3 workflow

Stuart Herbert - http://blog.stuartherbert.com/photography/Aperture 3 Workflow

Summing Up

• My workflow gets me from photo to published consistently time after time

• My workflow starts wide, and homes in on the final images to publish

• The quality of the original photo is always key

• Aperture is non-destructive, so experiment!
