AP Chemistry
Introduction
This course is designed to be the equivalent of a first year college chemistry course
Objective is to obtain a score of 3 or better on the AP Exam given in May
Score of 3 or above qualifies the student for college credit at most universities
Objectives
Understand basic components of matter and how they create all the different forms that exist
Be able to apply chemical concepts to everyday life
Be able to perform mathematical calculations pertaining to chemistry
Be able to use logic and critical thinking skills to solve problems – Scientific Method
Safely utilize appropriate laboratory techniques in testing scientific hypothesis
Grading Grades based on tests (~70%), labs (~20%)
and homework (~10%)
Classroom Rules Be respectful Be prepared Follow all safety rules and teacher directions
Materials Needed
Textbook Calculator Pen and pencil Notebook with paper Spiral notebook for labs
Where did Chemistry begin? Came out of practice of alchemy – attempt to
change common substances into more valuable elements such as silver and gold
Chemistry - The Study of Matter
Properties of matter Color Hardness Melting point Boiling point Density
Structure and Composition of Matter
What are the atomic and subatomic components of the material and how do they fit together
Changes Matter can undergo
Physical Change - Change in form but not in material structure
