My heart goes aflutter when I drive into a small, quaint town with little cottage-style houses, dirt roads two blocks off of Main Street, and a café on the corner where you can stop, and meet some “local folks.” These modest places are so charming, and still have many of the old, outdated signs, buildings, and stores that make up the heart and soul of small town America.

Things seem to move slower, and are more relaxed and simple there. Historic homes and buildings abound, because they have not been torn down to make space for “progress” in the form of new stucco office buildings and convenience stores. I love the little cemeteries with tall headstones, wrought iron fences, and 100 year old pine trees.

One of my favorite weekend pastimes is to venture to open, green valleys, such as Heber or Cache Valley, or down Highway 89 through Fairview, Spring City and Ephraim. The leaning barns, old tractors, and sprawling farms feel cozy, and yet adventurous. Last week, I was treated to a glimpse of a gopher burrowing dirt out of his hole, occasionally peeking over the top of the mound. The hideous, hated dandelions that spring up in my green lawn transform into a breathtaking view when hundreds of thousands of them gather in their yellow splendor to frame a mountain vista. After a weekend jaunt to a rural area, I feel renewed, relaxed, and excited about the small treasures that add sparkle and excitement to life there.

Wouldn’t you love to walk out of the back door of your home, and discover a shiny gold nugget, or a ruby or diamond? These precious gems are just down the road, and around the corner, waiting to be discovered. Get out and discover.

Millie and Roger are there on the weekends to assist customers with their search for treasures.

Millie was raised helping her Mother in her antique store is California, and had helped out in the business for thirty years, so she was quite familiar with the ins and outs of the antiques business. When first opening their store, Millie’s Mother actually moved to Utah to help get the first old house ready, and to open their antique shop. Millie’s collecting passions lie in American Tramp and Hobo Art,

American Art pottery, primitive furniture and accessories, paintings, and anything funky and unusual.

She has some stunning examples of folk art in the store that will please any collector. Roger on the other hand, collects more of the “Big, guy stuff” such as advertising signs, old store display counters, juke boxes, and radios that you will find featured throughout the store. Their fine eye for detail, quality and uniqueness shines through each object that is selected for the store.

They also have excellent examples of dolls and children’s items, primitive and Victorian furniture, Ice Cream and Soda Fountain items, old fishing collectibles, farming collectibles,

advertising, and art and vintage framed prints.

Hollyhock Antiques is a gem that is sure to please any collector, and is a great opportunity to venture down the road for a short getaway. Midway has become a travel destination, and is a pleasant spot to satisfy anyone’s desire for charm in a small town.

Hollyhock Antiques is a glowing tribute to Roger and Millie Medby’s lifelong passion and energetic love for historic buildings, and preserving the past. A heartfelt thank you goes to them for their hard work and determination, in saving a treasure that future generations may enjoy for years to come. Thank you!

Midway’s delectable cottage:

Christy Hardman, a regular contributor to The Deseret Antique Times, recently published her historical novel, Against the Giant.

Against the Giant is the story of the early years of David from the Old Testament. A project underway for almost ten years, Christy decided to tackle reading the Old Testament from beginning to end for the first time in 1998.

When she reached the story of David, Christy said, she was struck with what a powerful character he was, and the idea to write his tale in novel form started churning.

That was the beginning of a long journey that began with studying everything related to the Old Testament, including the Law of Moses, the culture and people of ancient Palestine, and the places and settings of David’s life. The more she learned, the more she loved it, and she came to know and love David as one of the most powerful and tragic

figures of all time. Delving into the bible story, Against the

Giant brings a brand-new perspective to the life of ancient Israel’s greatest king.

Recently, Today.com reviewer Tristi Pinkston wrote, “We’re all familiar with the story of David and Goliath, so I won’t go too deeply into that aspect of the story. The book itself doesn’t, either, but rather focuses on the back story of David’s family — his widowed father, his self-absorbed brothers, the way David was always overlooked as being too small, too young, not smart enough.

“We see the status of the country at that time, the lack of a king, the way the people pressured the prophet Samuel into anointing a king unto them, even though he told them it would be their downfall. He anointed Saul, knowing the Lord did not desire a king for His people, and hated seeing what became of it. We learn of the army’s movements, the tension between the warring factions, and what their battles meant to the people of the land.

“Between all this, Christy wove the scent of the kitchens, the smell of the animals, and the textures of the fabric. She painted the scene so well and with such evocative language, I felt as though I was there. This truly was a well-done piece of historical

fiction.”Christy is currently working on the sequel,

and plans to continue the series that will span the entirety of David’s incredible life.

also houses a large collection of minerals, Native American artifacts, regional and local family histories and an art gallery. A gift shop which sells everything from cheese to chocolates, children’s toys, books and gift items is also housed in the building.

The art collection also includes over 90 works from Avard Fairbanks. Fairbanks is known as one of America’s distinguished sculptors of the 20th century. In his career he created over 100 public monuments to great events and people in history. Four of these are found in the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

Fairbanks also sculpted many sacred Mormon themed sculptures, one of the most recognized being the sculpted Angel Moroni which is placed atop many LDS temples. The collection at the Fairview Museum is one of Fairbanks’ largest exhibits in the world.

“I believe the Fairview Museum is extraordinary on many levels,” said Staker. “There is such a diversity of collections. It is remarkable to have all of these items in such a small town. We also have a lot of wonderful volunteers who are grand to work with. This museum would not be open without its volunteers.”

The museum is run by a working board of trustees with the Fairview Museum Corporation which is a non-profit organization. They collaborate with Fairview city which currently owns the buildings the museum is housed in. There are currently about twenty to twenty-five volunteers who help in the museum and the gift shop.

The drive to the museum is also a highlight of visiting the area.

“It is a really beautiful drive,” said Staker. “Highway 89 and Highway 31 are associated with historic Mormon heritage. Highway 31 is also a national highway scenic byway. From Utah Valley to Fairview is a beautiful drive. This is a very beautiful part of Utah.”

ABBY’S ANTIQUE MALLYOUR FIRST STOP IN OGDEN!

Nestled in the heart of Heber Valley, about 50 miles from Salt Lake City, and 20 miles from Provo, lay the charming little Swiss-style hamlet of Midway. This town of a bit over 2000 residents is lined with cottages, Inns, and structures that have preserved the Swiss architecture that sets Midway apart as a historic treasure. Millie and Roger Medby have been the rescuers for two historic homes in Midway that were slated for demolition, as well as preserving and restoring an additional home and gas station on Main Street. They are the proud owner’s of Hollyhock Antiques, a delectable cottage full of primitives, quilts and textiles, advertising items, Americana, and other delightful and unusual treasures.

About fifteen years ago, the Medbys, who lived in Southern California, were invited to visit Midway. They were looking to buy a second home when they discovered this hideaway, and fell in love with the old homes, the history, and the people that lived in Midway. They loved it so much that they stayed, and never went back to South Pasadena. Now, Midway is their permanent home. Millie and Roger opened Hollyhock Antiques in 1997, in a small cottage just north of the main intersection in town, where Main Street and Center Street intersect.

In 2005, the Medbys rescued a historic home from Main Street that was about to be destroyed, and had it moved to the property just north of their store. They moved this home and another one within a two week period, and were the first people to ever move a home in Midway, so they raised quite the attention and excitement in town. “Half of the town thinks that we are nuts, and the other half of town loves us for preserving the old buildings,” Millie said. Both homes made the move with no damage.

This home was made of wood construction, and originally built in the late 1800’s. The Medbys spent the next two years working on restoring the home, and bringing it up to code. The home was free, but Roger and Millie spent many thousands of dollars to have it moved, and then added countless hours and dollars to bring everything up to current building code, including pouring a new foundation, updating

wiring, plumbing, HVAC, and other systems. They added a wrap-around porch and replaced the missing gingerbread trim, using old wood and materials, doors, and windows to lovingly restore the home. It seems as though the house has been nestled in that spot for a hundred years.

Hollyhock Antiques was shifted to this new “old” building last fall, and is a perfect fit for all of the great antiques and collectibles that the Medbys have gathered.

Millie and Roger love and appreciate the old architecture, and want to preserve it for everyone to enjoy. The Medbys both work “real jobs” in the banking industry, where they do systems development for the Banking industry, creating contracts for banks, managing people and projects. They have blended their talents and strengths in their house preservation to perfectly form a team, with Millie serving as the project manager, and with Roger having a gift for the artistic and creative side of the renovation project. Their faithful employee, Susan VanWagoner, usually will be in the shop during the week to help customers, while

The Fairview Museum of History and Art is an outstanding regional cultural center which features local history, art, sculptures and a life size replica of the Columbian Mammoth.

The museum is currently housed in two large edifices, the Heritage Building and the Horizon Building.

The Heritage Building has a unique story behind how it came to be the home of the museum. The building is actually an old stone school house built in 1900. In 1960, the school district gave the building to Fairview City. The city leased the building for a while to artist Avard Fairbanks, who used the building as a studio and for storage.

“The building was in terrible shape,” said Ron Staker, current Museum Director. “The roof leaked, windows were knocked out. It was going to take a lot of work to fix it up.”

The city didn’t quite know what to do with the run down building and decided to put it up for auction. In 1966, two men, each putting up ten dollars, ended up winning the auction, paying only $20 for the building. They then set about gathering items from the area to put on display.

The museum has evolved from that day into two buildings and houses a diverse mass of artifacts.

The Heritage Building currently displays many beautiful historical items. There are textile and fashion displays, farm tools, displays of pioneer life including a replica of a dentist’s office.

The museum also has a large collection of lace and in the fall hosts a three-day lace making festival. There is a collection of handcrafted mini-carriages and coaches. The museum also showcases telephone technology, historic farm wagons and many pioneer portraits.

One of the museums most visited displays is the Peterson Statue, which was made in honor of Peter and Celestia Peterson who were the couple married the longest in Utah and who held the world record for the longest marriage for some time. The couple both lived to be over 100 years old and were married for 81 years. On display is also an article about them in an issue of Life Magazine in 1960.

The Horizon Building was erected in 1995 to house the full scale replica of the Columbian Mammoth which was unearthed on the Wasatch Plateau in 1988. The building
