With PRIDE season approaching and in recognition of 50 years since the Stonewall Riots, PFLAG Salem is proud to help sponsor this particular play. Unconditionally loving our queer children shouldn’t be an issue and PFLAG has been here since 1973 to help parents like Sister Timothea.
It is PFLAG’s vision and mission that every Kendall in our community is loved, valued, and proud of who they are. For more information about our non-profit chapter, local meeting times and dates, and about our events for this upcoming year—please call us at (503) 877-9098 or e-mail [email protected].
We would like to acknowledge these angel allies who helped make our play sponsorship possible:

I have always felt a connection to Del Shores’ work. He has a unique ability to capture the essence of the rare characters that live in the South. He often mixes in his evangelical religious upbringing and how it is often in conflict
with his own sexual orientation. I love his sardonic sense of humor, and how he lives life as a hybrid southerner in a completely different culture. He tells his stories with a lovely balance of humor, truth and appreciation. And of course, a certain amount of bawdiness. Sordid Lives, for example, was referred to as a “Black comedy about White Trash.”
When I was first introduced to Yellow I was taken by surprise by how different this particular work was from the rest of his plays. And while accurately capturing the dynamics of this southern family going through the discovery of betrayal and tragedy, he introduces, with a specific tenderness, Kendall. This portion of the story is inspired by a friend of Del Shores, Kendall Moore, who took his own life. Shores knew that Kendall grew up a gay kid in a fundamentalist family in Mississippi. The Kendall portion of this story was his attempt to revisit this time in Kendall’s life and give Kendall a way out of his abusive household, therefore giving him hope.
In the retelling of this story, Shores includes a family of allies. Their willingness to accept Kendall into their family, in the midst of one of their greatest tragedies, completely changes the trajectory of Kendall’s life. I am devastated by the thought of children having to endure abuse for being born a certain way. I have hope that by the telling of this story we will share the truth that kids in the LGBTQ community, kids like Kendall, are loved and welcome in our families, our homes and in our communities. I am so grateful for the sponsorship of the Salem chapter of PFLAG and support their mission of support, education and advocacy for LGBTQ people and their families in the Mid-Willamette Valley. The character, Bobby, in this play states it perfectly, “You do not have to be blood to be family.”

Pentacle Theatre’s Education Committee is pleased to announce that applications are being accepted for the Bill and Phyllis Cross Pentacle Theatre Scholarships for pursuit of higher education and the arts. Three scholarships are available to qualifying high school seniors:

To qualify, high school seniors must be graduating in the spring of 2019 and plan to attend college in the fall of 2019, whether a community college or a four-year institution. Applicants will be asked to demonstrate their experience with theater education as well as other theater involvement, including service at Pentacle Theatre. Additionally, applicants will need to report on their academic and professional goals and any special considerations of financial need. Lastly, applicants will be asked to submit a personal statement describing the impact of theater in their lives and their own contributions to the arts. For complete qualifying information, please refer to the application. Applications are available now. Scholarship applications are due May 1, 2019, and recipients will be notified by May 31, 2019. The fund, established in memory of Bill and Phyllis Cross, honors these two individuals who were awarded Pentacle Theatre’s highest honor of lifetime membership. While at Pentacle Theatre and during Phyllis’ career as a high school drama teacher, the Crosses served as mentors and role models, inspiring those around them in performing and technical theater arts. Jo Dodge, also a Pentacle Theatre lifetime member, has acted and directed in numerous Pentacle Theatre productions, taught acting workshops at the theater through Chemeketa Community College since 1981, and shared her love of theater with hundreds of Pentacle Theatre volunteers for nearly 40 years. The technical arts scholarship is awarded in honor of Tony Zandol, Pentacle Theatre’s former resident designer and first professional production director. The late Tom Ulmer was a tireless creator and educator of theatrical arts at Pentacle Theater, Children’s Educational Theater and Salem-Keizer School District. Pentacle Theatre honors his memory by awarding scholarship funds to a student who overcomes obstacles to give extraordinary time and effort to be involved in theater.

You may download the application from the Pentacle Theatre website (www.pentacletheatre.org), pick up one from a local drama teacher or contact the Education Committee chair, Robert Salberg at 971-208-2799 or [email protected].

March — mid-December
My previous President’s Corner submission talked about growing new and vibrant relationships, nurturing
established friendships and connections, and enjoying the beauty all around us. I continue to have the opportunity to do all three, and I am so thankful.
I am fortunate enough to have been cast in the current production, Yellow —and for this, I am truly grateful. This beautiful and poignant show has given me the chance to meet and connect with some amazing, talented people, and reminded me why I admire and respect those I already call friends. We are certain you will be captivated by this heart-felt story of
relationships and love, family and forgiveness as it unfolds on our stage.
But my thanks extend beyond the chance to act on the stage. As President of the Pentacle board, I am privileged to be able to work alongside a diverse group of board members who are passionate about this theater, and just as grateful as me for our patrons, sponsors, donors, volunteers and staff. It is my honor to serve with them to as we work together to promote and grow our little theater in the woods.
Our next production is Fools, which opens on May 24. Fools is a comic fable about a town cursed with chronic stupidity and the new-to-town teacher whose job it is to break the curse. It’s a fun, family-friendly show sure to make you laugh.
We are a third of the way through 2019, still early in the year, but time is moving fast. We welcome you to us at our 65th year anniversary on July 13 at Salem Convention Center. We promise you a night of fun!
I continue to be amazed at the giving spirit in our community — there is never enough opportunity to say thank you to our patrons, sponsors, donors, volunteers and staff. You are the reason Pentacle Theatre continues to grow and thrive, and we appreciate you.
Now, let’s get this show started! With gratitude!

Leon Tolchinsky is ecstatic! He’s landed a terrific teaching job in a small town. When he arrives, however, he finds people sweeping dust from the stoops back into their houses and people milking cows upside down to get more cream. The town has been cursed with chronic stupidity for 200 years, and Leon’s job is to break the curse. Friendships form, love prevails, and the sheep are always missing in this fast-paced comedy. Suitability: This comedy is suitable for middle-school age audiences and older.
Fools runs Friday, May 24 through Saturday, June 15. Tickets are available at the Pentacle Theatre ticket office, 145 Liberty St. NE in downtown Salem or online at pentacletheatre.org. For more information, contact 503-485-4300.
Fools is made possible by the generous sponsorship of Duchess and The Munchkin.
