Austin ASHRAE,
Ethics Month! Please arrive early. We
will have a packed house.
I’d like to start this month by thanking
your volunteer membership committee:
Spencer Rothery, Kyle Kramer, Carrie
Anne Crawford, & Will Clinton for their
hard work.
Can I also make a special important
request of our ASHRAE community. Will
you please check with your colleagues
to see who is not a member yet (or
currently renewed). Your company very
likely reimburses for membership in a
professional society. I sincerely
appreciate all of you volunteering your
time away from your normal whirlwind
to help with this.
Technology defines what we can do
Ethics defines what we ought to do
Politics defines what we will do.
I am honored to work in an industry full
of professional engineers who uphold a
moral code to protect the safety &
welfare of the public. Not all industries
have ethics at the forefront of their
practices. The additional challenge our
society faces every day is to attempt to
predict failure and control for them by
design.
“Accidents don’t just happen. They
are permitted to happen by fools who
take no thought of misadventure”
~~William Nelson Cromwell
We all have a noble task to design for
neglect, or for the weakest link to
never be overloaded by the greatest
force. Without great engineering, and
specifically air conditioning, Texas
would not be habitable and not the
great state it is. Thank you for your
diligence and significant importance
to our general livelihood. Something
not appreciated by the general public
as much as it should be. We’re often
not even noticed until it doesn’t work.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday, Jan 15th for dinner at County Line.
Sincerely,
Derrick Van West

Several Student Branch ASHRAE members are also active team members of the UT Solar Decathlon
Team. The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon challenges collegiate teams to design, build, and
operate solar-powered houses that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and attractive. The winner of the
competition is the team that best blends affordability, consumer appeal, and design excellence with opti-
mal energy production and maximum efficiency (from SolarDecathlon.gov). The UT Solar Decathlon de-
sign will include advanced energy and water systems integrated into Accessory Dwelling Units’ existing
infrastructure to improve livability and affordability. The UT Solar Decathlon Team is always looking for
donations in any way, whether it is money, sample equipment, or simply just time and experienced feed-

Research Promotion: Since 1919, the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)
have supported research to improve quality of life. ASHRAE Research impacts the industry by advancing
the way HVAC&R systems work and the way in which they are applied, and allowing development of
technical information to create standards and guidelines which serve as the basis for testing and design
practices around the world.

2015 ASHRAE Winter Conference and AHR Expo
ASHRAE is excited to return to Chicago for the 2015 Winter Conference, its historically best-attended
event. Attendees can discuss the latest topics in the building industry; participate in technical tours;
attend ASHRAE Learning Institute courses; earn professional credits; and obtain ASHRAE certifications.
Chicago also serves as the site of the AHR Expo, co-sponsored by ASHRAE and held in conjunction with
the Winter Conference.
The two events combine to create the ideal atmosphere for those interested in advancing the building
industry to network, inspect the latest technology and learn about the newest practices for the built
environment. Don’t miss the chance to participate!
The financial support provided by the AHR Expo helps fund vital research and other member programs.
We all will benefit from a strong turnout in Chicago.
