ANCIENT ATHENS DEMOCRACY
THE AGORA
• He hear of Athens was the Agora or the market.• Women and men would sell goods.• People of all types and classes shopped there.
THE BOULETERION/COUNCIL OF 500
• The council of ancient Athens met at the Bouleterion.• It had 500 member who were chosen each year
from the citizens of Athens.• They made decision about Athens like collecting
taxes or what questions required the vote of the citizens of Athens.• Bouleterion or Boule would set the agenda for the
assembly.
THE ASSEMBLY• The Assembly were all the citizens. • These citizens would debate and make decisions
on religion, taxes and whether or not to go to war.• They would meet at the Pnyx.
ATHENIAN COURTS
• Athenians would take their complaints to the magistrate.• The magistrate was a government official who
worked for the court. They were chosen by lottery for a one year term. • Any male citizen could be chosen to be on a jury
for trial.
CITIZENS
• Athenian citizens had to be free and born in Athens.• They had to have Athenian born parents.• Citizens had power and influence.
WOMEN AND METICS
• Athenian born women.• Foreign born women and men.• Had no power but had influence.
SLAVES
• Men and women owned by others. • They had no power or influence.
