Children• Approximately 12.5 million (17%)
of children and adolescents are obese
• From 1998 through 2003, prevalence increased from 13.05% to 15.21% and continues to increase
Hispanic Children
• Majority of Hispanic children live in California and Texas
• Hispanic children have highest rates of overweight and obesity in Texas
• Nationally, Hispanic boys have highest obesity rates among all boys
• Only 8% of Hispanic residents live in areas with one or more supermarkets, compared to 31% of white residents
• More than ¼ lack a usual health care provider to assist them
• U.S. and Mexico have highest rates of obesity in children and can be linked to corn subsidies which directly relates to fast food and sugary beverages.

facilitate the program• Children 3-18 can sign up• Exercise, nutrition education, and
health education provided to children every week
• Parents have own education classes simultaneously
• Prizes/Awards for health behavior
HEALTH BELIEF MODELSiempre Jugar! is based on the Health Belief Model. The HBM is based on the understanding that a person will take a health-related action if that person:
1. feels that a negative health condition can be avoided2. has a positive expectation that by taking a recommended action, he/she will avoid a negative health condition 3. believes that he/she can successfully take a recommended health action
GET FIT AND GET HEALTHYIt is Siempre Jugar’s! focus to educate and make nutrition and exercise fun for Hispanic Children all while promoting self-efficacy within the parents.
Program promotion within school systems, Hispanic outreach centers, and area churches.
