Line Powering Solutionsfor FFTx, Broadband & HetNet
• Most comprehensive product portfolio supporting both RFT-V and RFT-C standards
• Highest power density
• Highest power efficiency
• Variety of form factors for indoor, cabinet or OSP standalone sealed deployments
• Power holdup to ensure remote equipment ride through converter resets due to line transients
• Stringent safety features to protect people

Line Powering
•A means of energizing remote equipment from a centralized location over outside plant
(OSP) over telecom twisted copper cable
•Also known as remote power, network power, centralized power, span power
DC-DC Converters are used to convert from a standard 48V system to a high DC voltage,
transmitted over multiple copper power pairs, and re-converted back to 48VDC at the load
equipment end.
Line Powering was used for decades in telecom networks for various tasks, such as:
• the coin return mechanism of payphones
• T-1 repeater powering
• HDSL remote unit powering
• FTTC powering
•Used today for powering DSLAMs, mini-DSLAMs, DAS, Small Cells and FTTH

Line Powering System Architecture
Upstream Converter•Converts 48Vdc to +/-190Vdc•Located in CO (indoor) or remote power node (outdoor)
Downstream Converter•Converts 200-380Vdc to 48Vdc•May be integrated into access equipment’s power supply•Typically located outdoor
UltraCapacitor•Provides short duration backup for increased backup•Parallels onto 48Vdc bus•Optional accessory

Line Power Benefits
Avoids proliferation of batteries at the far end of the network
Minimizes the need for accessing AC service
Capitalizes on high reliability, low maintenance central battery and power system
Uses existing copper cable plant
Reduce time to market & Enables rapid deployment
Reduces CapEx and OpEx
©2015 Alpha Technologies Ltd. Proprietary
Other Benefits of Line Powering
Eliminate street cabinet battery theft
Provide power even during extended power outages
Eliminate regular battery maintenance & replacement

FTTN Advances Delay FTTH Deployments
• Copper is more cost-effective than fiber for brownfield applications (VDSL2
with FTTN deployment is 3 times less expensive than FTTH)
• Reusing the last mile of existing copper enables faster time-to-market.
• Fiber investments to support VDSL2 cabinet deployments may be
leveraged for future FTTH deployments
• At 100 Mb/s, copper with VDSL2 Vectoring provides plenty of bandwidth
for projected residential needs.
• G.fast: ITU-T specifications being developed with very high service rate
performance targets:
o 500 Mbps at 100 m
o 200 Mbps at 200 m
o 150 Mbps at 250 m
• Fiber-fed cabinets (FTTN), sealed DSLAM deployments (FTTC & FTTB)
and FTTdp extends the network to reach nearly all subscribers.
