All in the blood: Meet the Indian sportssuccessors who are carrying on the

family legacyABHISHEK PAUL | MAIL TODAY | NEW DELHI, AUGUST 4, 2013 | UPDATED 14:10 IST

India is a land where dynasties have been showeredwith adulation for ages. Stories of worthysuccessors

carrying forward the name oftheir reputed families span the world of politics, sports and cinema. Can

Rahul Gandhi lead his party to electoral victory? Will Ranbir Kapoor emerge asthe next superstar? Can

Arjun Tendulkar display the same talent as his great father? These questions dominate popular

imagination. If one happens to be the offspringof a successful personality, one is expected to not just take

up the same profession but also excel in it.

With their predecessors being stalwarts in their own right, the pressure, along with added attention, make

things doubly difficult for the next generation. Agreed, their access to the platform for showcasing their

talent is easier than others but when it comes to proving their mettle, they have to do it for themselves.

Some fail while others succeed and create a niche for themselves, and maintain the family legacy. Mail

Today takes a look at some ofthose clans whose achievements have become folklore in India.

    Lala Amarnath-Mohinder Amarnath

Nanik Amarnath Bhardwaj, better known as Lala Amarnath, was independent India's first T est captain.

He was also the first to score a ton for India. If the father was among those who played a key role in

shaping Indian cricket in its formative years, his son Mohinder was crucial in India's first breakthrough

title win -1983 World Cup. He was adjudged the player of the tournament.

Iftikhar Ali Khan, the nawab of Pataudi, played for England in the

infamous Bodyline series, and even scored a hundred on debut in

    Sydney.

He later led India in 1946, ironically to England.

He turned out in only six T ests and apart from that hundred, had no

substantial scores. His son, Mansur Ali Khan, is a legendary figure in

the history of Indian cricket and one of the best captains.

He gave Indians the confidence that they can beat the top sides. His

greatest legacy was the quartet of great spinners that emerged in the
