Final three days (21 23 May) of The Alde Valley Festival of Food,Farming, Landscape and the Arts at Great Glemham.
Daily walk to retrace Sir Peter Blakes footsteps along Aldeburghbeach, past Maggi Hamblings Scallop and on to Dune House, thebrand new Living- Architecture house on Thorpeness Beach.
Visit the stained glass window by John Piper in Aldeburgh Church.
Tuesday Saturday, 2:30-4:30pm: Henry Piper sculpture in acountry house in Stratford St Andrew.
Over bank holiday weekend, three roving poets, Tim Cumming,Robert Vas Dias and Tamar Yoseloff, will perform poems relating toart at intervals in the South Lookout. Radio Carbon by
Tim Cumming will a lso screen at intervals.
Snape Maltings with its concert hall, shops and cafes is 15minutes drive.
Delicious food in the several restaurants.
Fresh fish straight from the fishermen on the beach.
Aldeburghs famous fish and chips.
In addition to all the above, there are daily ticketed events that aredetailed in the following pages. Some events have very limitedcapacity and so we have to limit them to VIPs (people who areparticular supporters of Aldeburgh ART either by buying thespecial Peter Blake print, or by spending 150 each or 200 percouple on tickets.)

10.30am The Mayor of Aldeburgh will Launch Aldeburgh ART Week at the
Aldeburgh Beach South Lookout.

Exhibition in the South Lookout.
11am Launch by Professor Richard Demarco CBE of all week community
event: The Aldeburgh Social Sculpture. This is based on the Joseph
Beuys concept in which society is considered one great work of art to
which each person can contribute creatively, everyone is an artist. All
are invited to join in this beach based photography event in which every
one takes photos of each other, to be exhibited in the Jubilee Hall andalong Crag Path. Beuys was introduced to the UK by Richard Demarco,
who leads this week with hia Avant Garde vision.
Launch of Daphne McClure daily performance art.
She will knit 25 ft long Scarfout of discarded plastic bags.
Launch of Look Out! Im an Artist.Aldeburghs South Lookout inspires everyone to think creatively. Climb
to the top to be completely alone for 5 mins, and think what would I do
if I was an artist? Then do it and exhibit it in the S Lookout.

made by her for her exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

throughout the Week.
11am Richard Demarco launches daily performance art on the beach,close to The South Lookout: John Hale-White reads The Ancient
Mariner. Janet Q Treloar presents Table a performance art work.

collection, which includes a brand new work by Roger Hardy.

4:30pm The Leonardo Question a play about passion and power in the Art

discussion, In search of the avant-garde, led by Richard Demarco,

10.30am Stephen Farthing presents The North Sea his specially
commissioned painting to be played by three musicians. The South
Lookout.
11:30am Is Drawing Necessary for 21st Century Art? A talk by Prof Stephen
Farthing RA, who was Master of the Ruskin School of Drawing, Oxford
and is currently the Rootstein Hopkins Research Professor of
Drawing at the University of the Arts, London. He will sign copies of his
book Art: The Whole Story. Jubilee Hall 10
12.30 Ryan Gander flies the flag, Eye Sea Know Ships, 2011, at the
South Lookout. Ryan Gander lives in Saxmundham and has just
exhibited at the Guggenheim in New York.
1-2pm Private view in the Cinema Gallery, wine and artists snacks.

2.30 An Artistic expedition witness to Climate Change.
3.30pm Chris Wainwright, Head of Colleges at the University of the Arts London,
was one of a small group of artists and scientists who made up Cape
Farewell, which went on an expedition to the High Arctic to witness the
front line of climate change. He will introduce Unfold the exhibition he
curated for Cape Farewell and will sign copies of the book Unfold and
his new book In Light. He will also show extracts from the film of Cape
Farewell. Aldeburgh Cinema. 10
5 7.30pm Private view and drinks party. You are invited to a glorious country
house in Stratford St Andrew to view sculpture by Henry Piper and
ceramics by Prue Piper in the idyllic gardens. Henrys grandparents,
John and Myfanwy Piper, enjoyed a long friendship and working relation
ship with Benjamin Britten and Peter Pears. Drinks and canaps.

8pm The Chatto Quartet concert. Playing Mendelssohn, Zemlinsky and
Haydn followed by playing of The North Sea. The Jubilee Hall.

11 2pm Launch Party of Sculpture at Glemham Hall. Glemham Hall is an
Elizabethan Manor house situated in 300 acres of beautiful parkland and
very visible on the A12 between Woodbridge and Saxmundham.

Elisabeth Frink, Nigel Hall, Phillip King, Henry Moore, Breon OCaseyand Peter Randall Page. Preview VIPs only
2.30 Country House Collection You are invited to the beautiful country
4.30pm house and garden of a private collector in Great Glemham who worked
for Sir Roland Penrose, whose drawings we will see. We will be joined
by his son Antony Penrose. Also works by John Hoyland and others.

5.30pm The Boy Who Bit Picasso. Antony Penrose talks about his childhood
adventures with Picasso. He grew up at Farley Farm with his parents, Sir
Roland Penrose and Lee Miller. Picasso visited in 1950 and in the
following years Penrose accompanied his parents on numerous visits to
Picassos homes in the South of France. Penrose will sign copies of his
book, The Boy Who Bit Picasso. Jubilee Hall. 10, Children: 5
7:30pm A Preview Stage Reading of Desire Caught by the Tail, a rarely
performed play by Pablo Picasso. Introduced by Antony Penrose,whose father, Sir Roland Penrose, translated the play from French to
English. Penrose gives us some background to the play which was first
performed in 1944 with a cast including Simone de Beauvoir, Dora Maar
and Jean-Paul Sartre and directed by Albert Camus. After performance
discussion, wine and art snacks available. Jubilee Hall. 10

introduced by Antony Penrose (The Boy Who Bit Picasso)

autobiographies and biographies of major artists and finds some
surprising incidents. She is joined by Dr Alan Wilkinson, editor of Henry
Moore: Writings and Conversations (Lund Humphries, 2002). 10
1pm Gourmet lunch at the Butterfly Room at the Bell Inn,
Saxmundham. Butterfly prints by Sir Peter Blake RA. Meet Russell, the
Maitre d who will mix you your Butterfly cocktail. 30 places only.

the chaos of mid-'60s New York, Edie (Miller) is taken under the wing of
Andy Warhol (Pearce) who sees in her untamed vulnerability the
makings of an irresistible muse.

11.30 Francis Carnwath CBE, An Outsider in the Art World in the

world, including: Deputy Director of Tate; Deputy Chairman of the
Whitechapel; Chairman of the Musgrave Kinley Outsider Arts Trust; and
is currently, among other commitments, Chairman of the Yorkshire
Sculpture Park. He talks about his involvement in important projects in
the art institutions in which he has been involved, including the choice of
Bankside Power Station for Tate Modern and the founding of Tate
St.Ives 10

11-12am 1 hour childrens entertainment and young artist workshop led by

2-3pm John Spurling, Liszt. The great composer, Franz Liszt, born exactly
200 years ago, was a friend and admirer of visual artists, many of
whom, including Ingres, painted, drew or sculpted his portrait. Simon
Watterton plays three short piano pieces from his "Years of
Pilgrimage", responses to the work of Raphael, Michelangelo and
Salvator Rosa; and the playwright, novelist and art critic John
Spurling reads a chapter set in Venice from his new novel "A Book ofLiszts", published in May by Seagull Books in their World Literature
series. 10
