AISI Type 430
Grade 430 is a ferritic, straight chromium, non-hardenable grade, combinininggood corrosion resistance and formability characteristic with useful mechanical
properties. It is easily formed and resists nitric acid. It is also used for appliancecomponents and motor vehicle trim, which are by far the most used applicationsfor this alloy.
Grade 430F is the free-machining version of this grade, available in bar form foruse in automatic screw machines. There is a grade that contains molybdenum,stainless steel alloy 434, known for having the same quality as grade 430, butalso having a greater resistance to corrosion.
430 have a great resistance to organic acids such as nitric acid. It is even moreresistant to corrosion when it is has been buffed or highly polished. Stresscorrosion cracking resistance of Grade 430 is very high, as it is for all ferriticgrades.
Solution Annealing heat to 815-845C, hold for hour per 25mm of thickness,slow furnace cool to 600C and then quickly air cool. Slow cooling from 540-400C will cause embitterment.
The best grade of alloy 430 for machining is grade 430F. While grade 430 ismore easily machined that 304 and other standard austenitic grades, it may stillgall, however.
