INSTALLATION

RequirementsPlease be sure your computer meets or exceeds thefollowing requirements before installing and playingAirport Tycoon 2.

Pentium III 600 MHz or better Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP 64 MB RAM 500 MB free hard drive space

DirectX 8.1 compatible 3D accelerated video card with atleast 32 MB RAM

DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card

Installing the GameInsert the Airport Tycoon 2 game disc into your CD-ROMdrive. If AutoPlay is enabled, the AutoPlay menu will appeara few seconds. Click Install and then follow the on screeninstructions to install Airport Tycoon 2.

If AutoPlay is disabled, you must manually launch theAutoPlay program. Double click the My Computer icon onyour desktop, then right click on your CD-ROM drive andselect Explore. Double click setup.exe. The installationprocess will now begin. Follow the on screen instructions to

install Airport Tycoon 2.

Starting the GameIf AutoPlay is enabled, click Play on the AutoPlay menu tostart the game.

If AutoPlay is disabled, click the Start button on yourWindows task bar and select Programs/Global Star/AirportTycoon 2 and then click the Play AT2 link.

Uninstalling the GameTo uninstall Airport Tycoon 2 click the Start button on yourWindows task bar and select Programs / Global Star / Airport

Tycoon 2 and then click the Uninstall AT2 link. Follow the onscreen instructions to uninstall the game.

MAIN MENUAfter the game loads, you are presented with the MainMenu. Several Options are available to you from the MainMenu.

New GameClick on New Game to begin a new Free Play game. Uponclicking New Game you are taken to the Choose LocationScreen. From here you can select where in the world youwish to build your airport.

Click on a continent on the map. Once you have selected acontinent, a list of cities will appear in the list on the righthand side of the screen. Click on a city in the list to seeinformation on that city. You will see information suchpopulation, number of continental and intercontinentalflights, as well as severe weather conditions you mayexperience in that area.

When you have selected a city in which you wish to buildyour airport, click the Accept button on the left hand side ofthe screen to start the game. Click the Cancel button to

return to the Main Menu.

ScenarioAirport Tycoon 2 includes a number of scenarios to provideyou with some extra challenge in building an airport, ormanaging a previously built airport. Generally, you will havea limited number of years to attain all of the objectives for ascenario. Objectives include reaching a profit goal, having acertain number of airline contracts, and so on. Click theScenario button from the Main Menu to proceed to theScenario screen.

Click on a Scenario in the list, and then click the Acceptbutton on the right hand side of the screen to load it. Oncethe scenario loads, the Objectives window appears,

explaining your goals for that scenario. Click the X button toclose the Objectives window and begin play. In addition toobjectives you must attain, scenarios tend to up the antewith random disasters. You can surely expect to see somewell-timed earthquakes and tornados, just when you leastexpect it.

NOTE: You can access the Objectives window via the AirportInformation window (described later in this manual).

Load GameClick the Load Game button to see a list of saved games.When you start Airport Tycoon 2 for the first time, there willbe no save games in the list.

Click on a saved game in the list (a screenshot of the gameappears in the window above the list), and then click theAccept button on the right. Use the scroll arrows to scrollthrough games in the list. If you no longer need a particularsaved game, click on the game in the list then click theDelete button (this is useful for removing clutter from the

load screen).

OptionsClick the Options button to change game settings.

Terrain Toggles the terrain On and Off. If you haveproblems running the game smoothly you may want totoggle this option off .

Help Toggles in game help On and Off. The Help optionopens a window on occasion while playing the game thatoffers instruction or tips on playing the game. Toggle thisoption off to avoid pop up help windows.

Resolution The default setting for the game is 1024 x 768.

If you wish to change the resolution, click the appropriatebox, then click the Apply button. If you experience problemsrunning the game smoothly, you may want to select a lowerresolution. Lower resolutions provide smoother game play atthe expense of crisper graphics.

Ambients Ambients are all of the moving parts in thegame such as vehicles and planes. The Ambients settingdetermines how many ambients you will see on the screenat one time. If you are having problems running the game

smoothly, you may want to lower this option.

Particles Whenever there is smoke, rain, snow or fog onthe screen, there are particles. If you are having problemsrunning the game smoothly, you may want to lower theParticles setting.

Music volume Use the slider bar to raise or lower gamemusic.

Sound volume Use the slider bar to raise or lower game

sounds.

Click the Cancel button to close the Options screen.

CreditsSee a list of the people who contributed to the game. Clickthe Cancel button to close the Credits screen.

ExitClick the Exit button to close the game and return toWindows.

PLAYING A FREE PLAY GAME

Buy Land ScreenAfter you have selected a location in which to build yourairport, you are presented with the Buy Land screen.

The grid in the center of the screen represents the entire lotof land you are able to purchase during the game. However,you do not have enough money to purchase the entire area

from the start. Use the left mouse button to click and dragout an area of land to purchase. As you drag out an area ofland, the current purchase price is displayed beneath yourCash On Hand.

If you find that you have purchase too much land, hold theShift key then left click and drag a selection of land you wishto sell. The money will be returned to your Cash On Hand.

Date The current game date and time of day.

Cash on hand This is the amount of money available foryou to spend.

Time slider Left click on the watch face and drag it alongthe slider bar to increase and decrease game time. Drag thewatch face all of the way to the left to play in real time (1real time second = 1 game second). Drag the watch face allof the way to the left where 1 real time second = 1 gameday.

Weather This area displays the current temperature, windand weather conditions. An icon is shown as well for a visualindicator of weather conditions.

Main Toolbar All game functions and information (build,demolish, contracts, etc.) are accessed via the Main Toolbar.

Mini Map The mini map shows an overhead view of yourairport. Multi-colored blocks represent buildings and objects.Left mouse click on the mini map to move the camera tothat position.

Camera controlsThere are several ways to control the camera in Airport

Tycoon 2. They are listed below. You may find that acombination of all these controls works best dependingupon the situation.

Mouse controlsLeft mouse button default When an object is NOTselected to build and the main cursor is active, double clickon the terrain to move the camera to that point.

There are two rules that must be followed before you cancontinue on. First, the land you purchase must be longenough to build a 2000m runway. If you do not have enoughland to include a runway, an alert message will appear afteryou have clicked the Accept Purchase button. Second, theland you purchase must meet one of the edges of the grid,so that a road entrance can be placed (otherwise, customerscould not get to your airport).

If you are not satisfied with your selection, click the CancelPurchase button to erase your selection and start over. You

can return to the Buy Land screen at anytime during thegame by left clicking the Buy Land button on the MainToolbar.

NOTE: The Check button and X button are used often. Whenin doubt, remember that the Check button means acceptand the X button means Cancel or Close.

the main cursor is active, click and hold the left mousebutton, then move the mouse forward/back/left/right tomove in that direction. The more you move the mouse, thefaster you will move in the game world.

Right mouse button default click and hold the rightmouse button then move the mouse left or right to pan thecamera left and right.

Click and hold the right mouse button then move the mouseforward or backward to pitch the camera up and down.

Mouse wheel default move the mouse wheel forward tozoom in. Move the mouse wheel back to zoom out.

When an object is selected to build, simply move the mouseto the edge of the screen of the direction in which you wishto move. When an object is selected to build, click the rightmouse button to rotate the object before placing it.

Main ToolbarThe Main Toolbar (located along the right hand side of themain play area) contains all of the commands necessary tobuild and run your airport.

BUILD - This button opens the Build menuallowing you to place buildings and objects.The Build Menu slides open from the right ofthe screen.

Airport Support any building that isinvolved in providing maintenance or supportto your entire airport is placed under thiscategory. Plane maintains are necessary torefuel planes as they arrive. Turnarounds

provide catering services to your passengerairlines. Maintains provide generalmaintenance to all of your airports buildings.

Storage Facilities Buildings such as cargobuildings and hangars are placed under thiscategory.

Airside Navigation Airside navigation refersto all operations that are necessary forreceiving airplanes. As your airport grows,you will discover that higher-level buildingsare necessary to receive premier airlinecontracts.

Transportation Any building or object thatis necessary for vehicles to travel in yourairport is under this category. Items such asbus stops and taxi rank help to populate yourairport with customers. Car parks arenecessary to handle the population as yourairport grows. Roads allow vehicles to accessmany buildings in your airport. Taxiway isnecessary for planes to travel from therunway to your terminals. Finally, apron is

CONTRACTS - To see pending and signedcontracts click the Contracts button.

AIRPORT INFO - The Airport Informationscreen shows a variety of stats on yourairport, such as Total Maintenance Costs,Number of Contracts, Population, etc. Clickthe Airport Information button to access thisscreen.

OPTIONS - Clicking the Options button bringsup the Options menu. From here you canSave the Game, Load a Game, Change GameSettings or Exit to the Main Menu.

MESSAGES - If you have messages, theMessages button with move up and down.Click the button to open the Messageswindow to read messages.

Build Menu

Buildings and objects are divided into 7 categories.

Scenery this includes park pieces, todecorate empty areas in your airport. A nicelooking airport contributes to the overallsatisfaction of your visitors.

Public services when you have received andaccepted a gas station, hotel or car rentalcontract, the building for it is placed under

NOTE: Roads, taxiway and aprons are placed somewhatdifferently than other objects. By clicking and holding theleft mouse button, you can drag out a stretch of road ortaxiway by moving the mouse in the desired direction.When you are finished building road, apron or taxiway, youmust first press the Esc key on your keyboard to return tonormal functions.

To close the Build Menu, click the blue arrow at the bottomright hand corner of the menu.

Demolish buttonOccasionally you may want to demolish a building. Usuallythis is done if you have misplaced a building and wish torebuild it in another location.

To demolish an object, click on the Demolish icon on themain toolbar. You can activate the demolish function whenthe Build menu is open or closed.

When you left click the demolish icon the main mousecursor becomes a yellow and black cursor. Left click on anobject to demolish that object.

When you demolish the more important buildings in

the game, you are presented with a prompt asking ifyou are sure you want to demolish the object. Clickthe check to proceed.

You receive money back when you demolish buildings,however, you receive no money back when demolishingroad, apron or taxiway.

Emergency Services Any building thatresponds to emergencies, or helps to avoidemergencies, is placed under this category.Fire stations and police stations are examplesof emergency services building. Your airportssafety and security ratings increase with agreater number of emergency servicebuildings. Higher-level buildings are necessary

to receive premier airline contracts.

Placing ObjectsPlacing buildings is very simple in Airport Tycoon 2. Left clickon a category (on the left hand column of the build menu),then left click on an object in the list (the center of themenu). Information on the selected object appears in theboxes at the bottom of the Build Menu. Click the scroll bararrows to cycle through available objects in a particularcategory.

After you have selected an object to build, move the mousecursor over the landscape. Notice that the selected objecthas replaced your mouse cursor. Right mouse click to rotatethe object, in case you wish to orientate it differently, and

then left mouse click to place the object on the landscape.If you wish to place multiples of a selected object, hold theShift key while left clicking.

If you select an object by mistake, you can press the Esc keyto return to the main cursor, or click another object in theBuild Menu.

To see a list of your signed contracts click theSigned contract button at the upper right ofthe Contract menu. Signed contracts appearin the middle of the menu.

The contract categorybuttons appear at the top left

of the Contracts menu. Fromleft to right they are: Airline Contracts, Flight Contracts,Business Contracts, Hotel Contracts and Gas StationContracts. Click one of the buttons to view either Offeredor Signed contracts in that category.

Click the X button to close the contracts screen.

Contract Details

Offered contracts appear in the middle of themenu. Click on the business in the center ofthe menu, and then click the View ContractDetails button, at the bottom of the menu,

to see the specifics of the contract.

Depending upon the type of contract, theView Contracts screen will have differentproposal figures. If you agree with acompanys proposal, click the Accept Contractbutton. The contract now moves from theOffered Contracts list to the Signed Contractslist. Click the newly signed contract in theSigned Contracts list, and then click the View

Building Status

When you first place an object, a status iconhovers above it. This icon shows that theobject is being built. After time, the icon willdisappear, indicating that building iscomplete and it is fully functional.

If a building requires maintenance, themechanical breakdown icon hovers above it.

If a building is on fire, the fire icon hoversabove it.

For those buildings that required employees,the disgruntled employee icon hovers abovethem when staffing is too low for thevolume of work (based on the size of yourairport).

ContractsAs your airport grows, airlines and other companies willseek out your business and wish to establish contracts withyou. When you receive a message that you have a contract,click the Contracts button.

When you open the Contract menu, it is setto Offered Contracts by default. Use thebuttons at the upper left of the menu to

Airport InformationThe Airport Information window allows you to track variousstatistics on your airport such as total profit, totalmaintenance costs, number of contracts, number ofpassengers, ratings, etc. Use the scroll bar on the right handside of the window to scroll through the information list.Click the X button to close the window.

If you are playing a scenario you can access the Objectiveswindow by clicking the Objectives button (cross hairs button)at the bottom of the Airport Information window.

Additionally, if you have received any awards, you may clickthe Awards button (trophy button) to see what you havebeen awarded.

Buy Land buttonWhen you have run out of building space and are ready toexpand your airport click the Buy Land button to go to theBuy Land screen. Left click and drag out the area you wish topurchase. Click the check button to accept your purchase.

Additionally, you can sell land back on the Buy Land screen(or change your purchase area).To sell land back hold the SHIFT key and left click and drag

out the area you wish to sell.

In Game Options ButtonClick the Options button to configure game options, load asaved game, save your current game, or exit the game to theMain Menu.

To load a game, click the Load Game button. Select a savedgame from the list and click the check to load that game.

Contract Details button to see the finalfigures.

If you wish to renegotiate any of the proposed figures, clickthe checkmark button next to the figure(s). The checkmarkwill become an X to indicate you do not accept the proposedfigure. Additionally, the Accept Contract button becomes theRenegotiate button once a checkmark becomes an X.

If you disagree with any of a companysproposed figures and wish to renegotiate the

contract (in an attempt to get more money),click the Renegotiate Contract button. Onceyou click this button, the contract will beremoved from the Offered Contracts list.After some time, the company will offer youa new contract. Depending upon thatcompanys attitude they will offer a newcontract with different figures, or they willpropose the original contract. Your ratingshave an effect on whether a renegotiationwill work in your favor.

If you disagree with a companys proposedfigures (usually after unsuccessfulrenegotiations) and wish to cancel the

contract proceedings, click the CancelContract button. The contract will beremoved from your Offered Contracts list.After some time, the company may attemptanother contract offer.

Object PropertiesRight click on a building (other than a terminal) to open theObject Properties window for that building.

All buildings have a base information window, however,some buildings have additional windows and functionsdepending upon its purpose in the game. This may include adrop down menu to select a caterer or fuel supplier or todedicate a building to a particular airline. Additionally, aslider bar may be present for some buildings, to control howstaffed that building is.

Click the X in the upper right hand corner of the ObjectProperties window to close it.

Inside the TerminalIn addition to building and managing your airport in theoutside game world, you can also decide what object toplace inside your terminal(s).

Right click on a terminal to open the Inside Terminal screen.

Before the saved game loads you will be asked if you wishto save the current game in progress. Once you have madeyour selection, the saved game will load.

To save a game click in the filename box and type in a newname for the saved game file. Click the check to accept andsave the game.

To configure game options click the Options button. Thismenu works similar to the Main Menu Options screen,however you cannot change the resolution while in game.

To exit to the Main Menu click the Exit button.

To close the Options menu and return to the game click theX button on the Options menu.

MessagesWhile playing the game you will receive event messages.Messages range from alerting you of an airline or businesswishing to conduct contract negotiations to an earthquakedevastating your airport.

When you have a new message you will hear a tone and themessage button will blink. Click the Messages button to

open the Messages window. Click on a message in the toplist to see details on that particular message.

To delete a message, click on a message in the top list thenclick the trash can button at the bottom right of theMessages window.

Click the X button in the top right corner to close theMessages window.

business icon appears in the Retail build menu on the InsideTerminal screen. You have a limited amount of time to placethe business icon after accepting the contract. Failure to doso will mean the contract becomes null and void.

Click the X button to close the Inside Terminal screen andreturn to the outside game world.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

1. How do I get passenger airline contracts?There are several things you must first do, to get yourairport ready for passengers. First, you must build aterminal. Then, you must place a road directly in front ofthe terminal, which runs down the length of the terminalfront. This road must then be connected to the entrancepoint of your purchased land.Next, you must build an Airport Maintain, Fire station, andCar park. These buildings must be surrounded by road, andmust be connected to the main road.Now, you must build a plane maintain and turnaround.These buildings should be surrounded by an apron, andmust have a clear path to the plane stands on your terminal.Next, you must build a control tower, which should beconnected to a road. Building must be fully complete on the

control tower before you are able to build runways.Last, you must build a runway. The runway must have a pathleading to the plane stands on your terminal. It is a goodidea to give planes as straight a path as possible leadingfrom the runway to the plane stands.

2. I've built everything required to get airline contracts, butI'm still not getting them?As a precaution, make sure that all buildings are surrounded

The grid in the center of the screen represents space insideyour terminal. Available space is blue, while unavailablespace is gray. The amount of available space is determinedby the size of the terminal.

There are 5 categories of objects to place inside the terminal:Security, Check In, Baggage, Public Services and Retail. Eachitem within each category has a different effect on yourratings and game play. Click a category button at the top ofthe screen to activate the build menu items for thatcategory.

Similar to the outside game world, you use a build menu toselect objects, and then place them on the grid. Left clickand hold on an object in the build menu, then drag the iconto available space in the grid. Release the mouse button toplace the item. Use the arrows at the top and bottom of thebuild menu to scroll through available items.

NOTE: 2 x 1 and 2 x 2 icons must be placed evenly in acolumn. If you take a closer look, the inside terminal gridis a 6 x 6 grid, with each box divided into 4 smaller boxes.A 2 x 1 or 2 x 2 icon cannot share more than 1 larger boxin the grid.

To remove an object from the grid, left click and hold on the

placed object, then drag it outside of the grid and releasethe mouse button.

An object is one of three sizes: 1 x 1, 2 x 1, and 2 x 2. It is upto you to determine how best to use the available space.

Retail works somewhat dif ferently than the other categories.Before items appear in the retail build menu, you must havefirst signed a business contract (similar to Public Services inthe outside world). When a business contract is signed, that

buildings you have, the more maintenance the AirportMaintain can handle. If you overtax your Airport Maintain,building conditions will degrade more quickly.

6. How do I get cargo airline contracts?Cargo airlines require that you build a hangar connected tothe runway (using taxiway), and a cargo building connectedto the hangar (using apron). Be sure to place an apronaround the perimeter of cargo buildings. Cargo buildingshave a maximum capacity. As cargo flights arrive, some ofthe capacity is used. Additionally, as some flights leave,

they take cargo with them and the capacity is restored.

7. How do I get intercontinental airline contracts?You must build the Customs building and attach it to a roadbefore you can sign an intercontinental contract. Dependingupon how many potential intercontinental contracts youhave, you may need to build more Customs buildings tosatisfy contractual needs.

8. How does dedicating buildings work?Before you can dedicate buildings to a particular airline, youmust first build an Admin building. Depending upon thelevel of a building, you may have to build a higher levelAdmin building to dedicate it. Additionally, depending uponthe number of contracts, you may have to build more Admin

buildings.

9. How do I get better passenger and cargo airline contracts?Naturally, the better an airline is, the higher therequirements it has. You will have to be able to build higher-level buildings of all types in order to receive higher endairlines. This includes needing a higher-level police stationor fire station, in addition to buildings like higher level planemaintains and turnarounds.Additionally, you may need to dedicate more buildings to

by road, taxiway or apron, depending upon the building.Make sure that the entrance to your airport is connected toterminals with road. Also, make sure that planes and vehicleshave clear paths to their destinations.

No matter which location you choose, you should geta decent amount of flights coming in. However, densepopulations such as Chicago, Tokyo and New York will yieldmore flights, as they are busier areas.

3. How do I get flight contracts?

Once a master airline contract is signed, you should startreceiving flight contracts. Each plane stand of a terminalcan handle up to 8 flights per day.Airlines will want to use all of the available plane stands,and will schedule flights throughout the day. If you findthat your airline is filling up, you will want to build anotherterminal to receive more flight contracts.

4. What do Plane Maintains and Turnarounds do?Plane maintains fuel the planes and turnarounds providecatering services for passengers. If you do not have enoughPlane Maintains and Turnarounds, delays will occur, becausethose vehicles have to be able to service planes in areasonable amount of time. Plane maintains andTurnarounds have a set number of fuel suppliers and

caterers (respectively). The further down the list, the betterthe supplier or caterer is, a better supplier or caterer costsyou more money, but runs more efficiently and has a morepositive effect on an airline's attitude toward your airport.

5. How does Airport Maintenance work?All buildings have a monthly maintenance cost. An AirportMaintain can keep buildings maintained up to a certaincombined monthly maintenance cost (i.e.: they can onlyrepair and maintain so much each month). The more

are not connected to the Main Entrance to the airport land,the mechanical breakdown icon will appear.

13. Why do the airlines fine me?Airlines will want to constantly send planes through yourairport, so it is necessary to have available plane stands. Ifyour plane stands are fully scheduled and your airportcannot handle any more flights, airlines will typically getannoyed that they can no longer schedule flights throughyour airport.

14. Why are my flights getting delayed /cancelled?Weather is the main inhibitor to smooth flight traffic.Generally, when there is a major disaster or extremely badweather, flights will be delayed (or possibly cancelled) butwill return to their normal schedule.

Additionally, you will see delays if you do not have enoughturnarounds and plane maintains to adequately handle thenumber of flights your airport is receiving.

Finally, if vehicles, planes, etc. cannot reach theirdestinations, flights may be delayed or cancelled. Be surethat planes have a clear and simple path from the runwayto the terminal plane stands, and make sure that all cargo,turnaround, and plane maintain vehicles can reach all

hangars / plane stands.

10. How do I get hotel, gas station and car rental contracts?Hotels, gas stations and car rental companies require that

your airport has a certain amount of daily traffic (people,not cars) before agreeing to establish them selves at yourairport. When you accept one of these contracts, thebuilding appears under the Public Services category in theBuild Menu. These buildings are free, in that building costsare handled completely by the business; however, you arestill required to handle monthly maintenance costs for thesebuildings.

11. How do I get business contracts?Similar to hotel, gas station and car rental contracts,businesses (retail and restaurants) require a certain amountof daily traffic before they agree to come to open up shopat your airport. A low-end business will have a lower dailytraffic requirement than a high end establishment.

12. Why do I keep seeing the Mechanical Breakdown iconover my building(s)?Mechanical breakdown indicates 2 things. First, it appearsif a building is below 50% condition. Additionally, if abuilding is not set up correctly (for instance, road, taxiwayor apron is not place correctly around the building) the iconwill also appear. Essentially, the Mechanical Breakdown iconwill appear whenever something hinders the building fromfunctioning the way it should. Additionally, if your buildings
