• Inspectequipmentandensure it isworkingproperlyandthatsafetymechanismsare inplace.

• Correct identifiablehazards,discussthosechangeswithyourcrewanddocumentthecorrection.

EffectiveCommunication

• Establish communicationprocedures betweenall employees, in particular betweensupervisorsandallworkers.

• If employeesareworking independently,provide communicationdevices suchas cellphonesorradiosandcheck---inwiththeemployeeregularly.

• Developabuddysystemtoensureallemployeesarebeingobservedtoprevent injuriesandillnesses.

• Closely supervisenewemployeesandprovideallemployeessufficient time toacclimatize tonightwork conditions.

• Periodically test systemsof communication to determineeffectivenessduringnightwork.Worker Health

• Itisrecommendedemployees shouldwearproperpersonalprotective equipment fornightactivities includinghighvisibilityvestsratedClass2orbetter.

• Employersmustprovide clean, cool,potablewater to combat fatigueanddehydration.• 1inevery20workersateachworksitemustbetrainedinFirstAid/CPRinthecaseofan

emergency. Thosetrainedmustbepresentattheworksiteduringnightwork.• Pestsuniquetotheworksitesuchassnakes,scorpions, insects,rodentsandotherpotential

harmfulanimalsshouldbe identified forallemployees,aswellas techniques forminimizingpotentialcontactandhowtoadministerfirstaidinthecaseofabiteorsting.

Emergency Action Plan

• Createanightspecificplanforrespondingtoanemergencysituation. Theplanshouldtakeintoconsiderationtheavailabilityofmedicalservices(i.e.hoursofoperationforclinicsaswell ashospitals).

• Also consider landmarkvisibilitywhendirectingemergency responders (i.e. can thelandmarksbeseenatnight).

• Employers should consider conductingaemergencyresponsedrillatnightensuringemployees understand the night specific plan components.

Training

• Allserious injuriesand illnessesmustbereportedtoCal/OSHAassoonaspracticallypossiblebutnot longerthan8hoursaftertheemployerknowsorwithdiligent inquirywouldhaveknownof thedeathorserious injuryor illness.If theemployercandemonstratethatexigentcircumstancesexist,thetimeframeforthereportmaybemadeno longerthan24hoursafterthe incident.Anincidentoccurringatnightisnotavalidreasonforfailingtoimmediately report to Cal/OSHA.
