JACK-UP RIG:
Punch-through
It is very important to establish the sea bed characteristic at the proposed
drilling location. The survey should give the sea floor penetration to be
expected at that location for this geology. The softness of the sea floor will
cause more or less penetration into the sea floor, such as soft clay.
The preload compact the sea floor but after some time, the vibration of the
drilling activity makes this compacted formation collapse into a cavity, causing
a punch-through. Punch- through can be devastating and even lead to the
total loss of the jack up.
The derrick, or mast, on a jack-up may be located over a drilling slot indented
in one side of the structure, or the drill floor may be cantilevered over the side
of the deck, allowing the rig to drill wells on stationary wellhead platforms.

Punch-through = immediate consequences ….
Legs and jack house seriously damaged
More than 8 months to recover the situation !
Jack up out of order to continue delineation programme.
Lessons learnt
Sea bed surveys are compulsory,
Procedures for pre-loading or jack down must be carefully reviewed,

JACK-UP RIG:
Other operational problem: JU rig re-entry into previous foot prints.
This problem can be minimized:
-- by increasing bending stiffness, between legs and hull (refer to JU design),
-- by using a rig with an identical spud-can arrangement and by ensuring that
the spud-cans re-occupy the same holes.
-- by undertaking preloading slowly with the hull in the water or as close as
possible to the water,
-- by jetting the legs in case any hang-up occurs within the old holes.
-- by making sure that the rig mooring equipment is adequate.

Jack-UP
mat supported type
For very soft seabed formations where high
leg penetration is anticipated (and non-acceptable),
a mat-supported JU can be mobilised.
This mat transfers the weight of the jack up through
the large surface of the mat. It is possible
to bring the jack up very close to the production
platform without undermining the platform.
Nowadays, only a few mat-supported JU are available.

After delivery from the yard, Maersk Intrepid will mobilize to the North Sea and begin a four-year firm contract with Total E&P Norge for drilling the demanding and complex wells on the Martin Linge field development in the Norwegian
North Sea With a leg length of 678 feet, the rigs are the world's largest jack-up rigs and are designed for year-round operation in
the North Sea, in water depths of up to 492 feet.
