Susan Langmore, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, BCS-S
Dr. Langmore is Professor, Otolaryngology and Clinical Professor, Speech Language Hearing Sciences, Boston University. She has an active research program. She is best known for developing the FEES procedure and for her work in aspiration pneumonia. Recently, she completed a clinical trial with head/neck cancer patients. She has been awarded Fellow of ASHA and Honors of the Association.

Course DescriptionThis one day course with clinical focus will provide evaluation considerations and treatment options for patients with neurogenic dysphagia. The clinical dysphagia exam and the use of FEES will be presented for patients in a variety of clinical settings. Evaluation of patients with chronic dysphagia will be addressed. Case studies will illustrate clinical findings. New modalities of evidence based treatment options will be presented including electrical stimulation, pharyngeal stimulation, and noninvasive brain stimulation. Decision making considerations will focus on preventing aspiration pneumonia while balancing quality of life issues.
Course ObjectivesUpon completion of the course participants will be able to:1. Administer and interpret a clinical dysphagia exam and a FEES
to patients with good sensitivity who have been extubated in the ICU.
2. Customize a dysphagia evaluation for chronic dysphagia patients.
3. Identify when and how a FEES examination will benefit patients with neurogenic etiologies.
4. Identify the underlying problem to target the best rehabilitative and compensatory techniques.
5. Describe new modalities for treating neurogenic dysphagia.6. State means to minimize a patient’s risk of developing
pneumonia.
