Education holds the power to transform young minds within the human
lifespan. While schools have an unprecedented opportunity to improve the
lives of young people, progressively it is becoming important for a school to
provide services for overall child development including psychosocial
wellbeing. Efforts to encourage co-curricular participation for the special needs
students as an integral part of the learning at school helps to unlock the infinite
potentials and empower their self-esteem and higher pursuits.
In this regard, a unique NATIONAL TALENT OLYMPIAD for Students with
Special Needs was sponsored and supported by IFCI Social Foundation, an
initiative by Expressions India - The National Life Skills Education & School
Wellness Program. The National Talent Olympiad has been a pioneering and
prestigious event that provided the special needs children the platform to showcase
their abilities and talent.
IFCI Social Foundation is known for its generous efforts and contribution to
support the social causes and promotion of the same. As a part of the social
initiative, sincere steps have been taken to promote educational and social
accomplishments specially for those who need more attention for fulfilling
their achievements in all fields viz sports, games, art, music and other allied
fields. Keeping in step with the ideology of inclusive education, it is one of the
important goals of 21st century schools and the education system should focus
on identifying and recognizing every child for their talent and potential in
overall human development.
Expressions India as an national organization is transforming the important
objectives of education from holistic child development perspectives to
assisting the special needs children and promoting their welfare.
The National Talent Olympiad was formally inaugurated by the Honourable
dignitaries from IFCI Ltd. SHRI PAWAN KUMAR, General Manager and
SHRI A. K. SAXENA, Deputy General Manager, IFCI Ltd, graced the occasion with
their erudite presence. We also had MRS. SUSHMA PAUL BERLIA, President of
Apeejay Stya & Svran Group, Shri V S Garg, Educational Advisor, Apeejay
Education Society and Shri A P Sharma, Principal of Apeejay School, Sheikh
Sarai, New Delhi as our Honourable Guests for this Talent Olympiad.
During the Talent Olympiad, eminent professionals from the disciplines of
Education, Behavioral Sciences, Fine Arts and Culture also joined hands. More
than 500 ebullient students from 50 schools from the Delhi/NCR, actively
participated in this prestigious Olympiad.
Various events/ activities were going on simultaneously like: Role Play, On
the Spot Canvas Painting, Poster Presentation (based on life skills).
Day 1: 14th Feb, 2017 started with a beautiful invocation and cultural
programmes by Delhi schools, participating in an invigorating March-past at 9.30
am. Activities such as sports and fun games included 60-80 mts. race, obstacle,
lemon and one leg race benefited the balance in all aspects of their life: social,
physical and mental. They became informed about all the adaptive sports and
adaptive physical activities for children with special needs. Students expressed
their creativity and artistic talents through On the Spot Poster Making and
Canvas Painting on the topic “My beautiful world”. Before commencing the
competition, some of them clarified on the given phrase which helped them to
showcase their potential to the fullest.
Day 2: 15th Feb, 2017 the participants later competed in creating jingles and
theme songs on the impact of Media, Nutrition, Sanitation, Girl Child, Mental
Health etc. Literary activities encouraged them to showcase their cognitive
abilities to understand, memorize and comprehend concepts such as in Poem
Recitation, Calligraphy and Jingle. The competition Eloquence had the
participants to express their views on „Every Child Matters for the Nation’.
Participation of children from all Schools in the National Talent Olympiad for
students with special needs was commendable.
Dance, Singing and Nukkad Natak was the activities for performing arts. They
were enjoyable and interactive and gave children a way to express themselves.
Dance and Singing also helped with confidence and social skills. Interacting with
others of like needs, in a non-judgmental setting, with a trained patient instructor,
enhanced and encouraged both social integration and confidence. On a more
artistic note, Nukkad Natak allowed creative expression, both individually and in a
group setting, encouraged exercise, and promoted healthier living.
The National Talent Olympiad concluded with deep gratitude and vote of thanks to
the honorable dignitaries along with the Valedictory Ceremony which was
presided over by Mrs. Ritu Chaudhary, Block Education Officer, Gurgaon,
Haryana. Prof. J L Pandey, Former National Coordinator, NPEP & AEP,
NCERT was also involved in the distribution of Prizes, Medals & School
Citations followed by Group Photographs. The sentiment bestowed by all the
dignitaries and students stirred the grand success of the National Talent Olympiad.
The entire team of Expressions India hereby earnestly thankful to the
IFCI Social foundation for having extended the support by sponsoring this
state of the art event for the special needs children. We all sincerely hope
that we shall be able to take this forward for the next event of this kind in
the interest of the child and community welfare and promotion of sports
and games in young people.
