Whole School Attendance since
Sept 2018 97.19%
TARGET: 97.7%
Issue 35 Monday 24th June 2019
I hope that you have all received the letter regarding next year’s classes.
I will attach it to the end of this newsletter too. I am just finalising the
last learning support assistant posts and I will send out an email once
these have been confirmed. We have been very fortunate to be able to
employ more teachers than expected and have been able to ensure all
children across the school will have smaller classes for at least the
mornings and if not for the full timetable. This does mean that if staff are
absent the classes will go together as two or if the classes need covering,
but we will try to keep this to a minimum. If you do have any worries
about next years classes, then please do come and see me.
Our first transition day is on Thursday, and per the letter, please drop off
at current classes but pick up from the new classes. I have today spoken
with the children about change and how it can make us feel a little
wobbly as we go from what we know to what we don’t know, but as
with most things, the unfamiliar will become the familiar. We will
support the children through the transition. Year 6 have also started
their transition to their new secondary school and as mentioned, I think
this is the first time that children are going to all secondary schools on
the island. We will make sure that all the children have a positive
transition to further embrace their learning journey. For Year 6, a survey
monkey for Leaver’s breakfast and BBQ will be out this week. The it will
be off to France we go!
We began this week in school with a super visit from Chris the
didgeridoo man! He came in and all the children have had a go at
learning how to play the didgeridoo but also some of the original
aboriginal stories that have shaped their lives. It was very interesting and
so enjoyed by the children. You may be inundated with requests to buy a
didgeridoo or two!
We also had today a phonic audit today in school from a school in
Southampton who will be working with us over the next 2 years to help
develop our phonic teaching and learning. The biggest area that we need
to address is to buy lots of fully decodable books as ours are very old and
need to be thrown away. We are hoping to get a little bit of funding to
help support with this but as a school we are going to heavily invest in
some new books and I would love for the children to bring home the
new books to read with you at home too. However previously we have
been reluctant to invest as both many of our reading and library books
do not always make it back to school and we would like to develop a
system where all books taken home are returned the next day. So I’m
very excited to September when we will have at last some fabulous new
reading books that matches the letters and sounds phonics approach.
As I am sat writing the Newsletter, the Year 5 and 6 are currently taking
part in the triathlon event here at school. We have another sporting
event here at Lanesend on Thursday for Year 3/4 when they take part in
quad kids and on Friday we are taking part at PEACH games at The Bay
from 10 till 2.
Last weeks sporting events saw several cricket matches won and lost by
the teams but the children played with much enthusiasm and motivation
and thoroughly enjoyed the events. I also have to say a huge well done to
the girls football team that took part in the Hampshire games and league
finals. The girls did brilliantly, winning 3 games. They and such a fabulous
day and the feedback I got was just lovely and we are very very proud of
the girls. It is great to see girl’s football developing and congratulations to
the England lionesses who are through to the quarter finals. I’m sure we’ll
all enjoy watching to see if they can make it through to the finals.
Tomorrow, I am in London on a training course. I school Year 1 have
swimming, Outside of school, Medina college have their open day for
year 6 and Carisbrooke Primary hold an online safety workshop for
families at 6:30. Wednesday we have a new intake family meeting at 6:30
in the hall ready for our first transition day on Thursday.
We finish the week with Year 2 swimming and Year 5 completing their
2nd session at water sports. It was so lovely seeing the photographs and
hearing the positive comments about their session on Friday. I am sure
one year we will find a future Olympian. Last week we would have
received information about our 2nd race for life event. Faye and her team
are busy making sure that it runs smoothly and that it is as successful as
last year. The children can come to school wearing pink for a £1 donation
and we are also asking for cake donations for an after school cake sale
with pink definitely being the theme. Don’t forget to fill in your
sponsorship forms too.
This Friday, the governors would like to meet families in school at 3pm to
feedback on this year so we can plan strategically for the year ahead.
There are definitely areas I would like to develop such as reducing our
plastics a looking how we can further develop eco schools. We have
reduced our electricity through LED lighting and have just ordered new
taps so they are push down and will reduce our waste of water. We do
recycle across the school but it is the plastics that continues to be the
focus. Reading is definitely going to be an area as is revalidating our arts
mark but we’d love to know what you think too.
Finally, may I remind our families that we are a no nut school. We have
had hazelnut products brought into school both this week and last. Please
please please check the ingredients. It really is a matter of life and death.
It was lovely to see the sunshine on the first day of summer. Watch out
for a turbulent week with thunderstorms to rising temperatures.
Have a great week.

they are to get better.”
