TIMELINE WHY IS DROUIN SECONDARY COLLEGE APP SO UNIQUE?
At Drouin we do not subscribe to the belief that ‘one size fits all’, APP is truly a managed individual pathway that we reassess every year.
SCHOOL CONNECTEDNESS
According to student surveys, par cipants in the APP report feeling substan ally more connected to school and more challenged in their learning.
WHAT IS APP?
The Drouin Secondary College Accelerated Pathways Program (APP) is designed to offer a cohesive program for learners who have been iden fied as very capable, commi ed, enthusias c students with academic skills at least six months ahead of their expected level.
The APP provides a complete and flexible pathway for selected students beginning in Year 7. A er a student has completed the Year 7 APP, they will have a managed individual pathway with access to accelera on in their individual areas of strength from Year 8 to Year 12.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The Accelerated Pathways Program allows for:
Greater connec on to peers within this group who have similar interests and enthusiasms, providing our students with a strong support network throughout their me at our College.
Keeping these students together for core subjects will also allow for a consistent, targeted approach to enhancing learning across a variety of contexts.
Teachers will ensure that work is targeted to students who required extra challenges with a focus on deeper thinking and making connec ons between ideas in the classroom and beyond.
The curriculum design and delivery will ensure enhanced learning covers a sufficient breadth and depth to prepare a student for accelera on and to give them a deeper understanding of subjects.
Students in this program will be encouraged and are expected to be involved in a range of College ac vi es such as sport, the College produc on, compe ons, deba ng, music and leadership roles.
WHY APP?
Drouin Secondary College believes that learning is best when it is targeted to a student’s individual needs. Opportuni es for learning present themselves in a variety of contexts and our college program aims to provide various ac vi es to s mulate learning for our students. As passionate educators, we want to foster the efforts of each child to reach their poten al by providing opportuni es for personal challenge on an individual level. Learning opportuni es must be consistently present, targeted, purposeful and within a clear con nuum leading to further learning.
We believe that a student’s pathway through the College should be targeted at the student’s individual strengths. Research shows that accelera on for academically talented students improves outcomes for these students. Learning in a challenging and dynamic environment with students of similar high ability will s mulate a student’s learning growth.
