What’s inside...
Well, we’ve really have had some hot days in June and I wonder if this will continue into July so that families can enjoy the summer holidays to the fullest. I guess we’ll have to wait and see with our fingers crossed. Children will be on school holidays soon, and to help you get them out and about a lady from Andover Hampshire Rocks explains the new craze to sweep the UK. If you want to get involved this summer, check out page 36 to read all about it and we hope the little ones enjoy taking part.
In this issue we cover a donation by the Freemason’s to Countess of Brecknock, Romsey Mayor makes a pledge, King’s Somborne Village Hall awarded TVBC Community Grant, the Test Valley Business Awards article and much more besides. It’s the Andover Carnival this month which needs your support to help Icknield School purchase a standing frame, read more on page 11, and Andover Festival of Motoring too (page 46). Exciting news as Music on the Test is back in aid of Countess of Brecknock Hospice, so if you fancy going along check out our What’s On section for more information (pages 58-60).
We are always happy to connect with local people whether it be Community or Education news, Local Events or Charity Fundraisers or whether you are local businesses looking to discuss their marketing strategy, so please do email us [email protected]. Please also get in touch if you have any events you would like advertised on our website (www.mlggazettes.co.uk) or in our What’s On section in the publications.

Thank you for all your legal questions over the last month. Our friendly team of experts randomly chose to answer the following questions:
My husband and I are both in our 80s and are worried we might struggle when it comes to making decisions in a few years. We have three children and would like them to be able to help us make decisions. I’ve read about Powers of Attorney but am not sure what these are, can you help?
We would certainly recommend that you consider creating a Lasting Power of Attorney (“LPA”) which is a legal document that lets you appoint one or more people (known as ‘attorneys’) to help you make decisions, or make decisions on your behalf. You and your husband will each need to create your own LPA but you can both appoint each other and your children if you trust them and believe that they have the appropriate skills to make the proposed decisions on your behalf. You can choose to appoint them on a joint or joint and several basis and can also include certain restrictions or guidance within your LPA if you so wish. There are two types of power and you can opt to make either, or both, of them:
The Property and Financial Affairs LPA gives your attorney(s) authority to deal with your property and finances, for example managing bank accounts, dealing with utility providers, paying bills, or dealing with your property. The power can be used or restricted as you specify.
A Health and Welfare LPA gives your attorney(s) power to make decisions about things like your daily routine (e.g. washing, dressing, eating), medical care, or moving into a care home. This authority can be extended, if you so choose, so that your attorney(s) have power to give or refuse consent to the continuation of life-sustaining treatment.
The LPA must be signed by you and your chosen attorney(s), and certified by an independent person confirming that you understand the nature and scope of the LPA and have not been unduly pressured into making the power. The power must also be registered with the Office of the Public Guardian before it can be used. For more information, contact us on 01264 333336 or email [email protected].

Duck racing on the River Anton is back!Beautiful weather and a great turn out by the Andover community made sure that the first duck event for several years and organised by the Anton Rotary Club was a great success. It was held on the Anton River between the Town Mills public house and the bridge at Bridge Street. Thanks must go to the eight sponsors of the event: Be Wiser Insurance, West Berkshire Brewery, the Patio Centre, Ranson and Houghton Solicitors, Oaktree Management Accountants, Wadsworth Beer, Places for People and Bulpitt Print.
The sum raised on the day was approximately £2000, with £400 going to some of the primary schools who helped sell tickets, while the rest of the money raised is earmarked to support Andover’s Young Carers.
Thanks must also go to the Town Mills public house for its support in putting on this event and to Alex Krupa and his singing companion, Kara, for
providing the musical entertainment during each of the races.
Such was the success, Anton Rotary hope to be able to put this event on again next year with some exciting additional races provided by our young members of the community.
Two hundred racing ducks being egged on by their backers!
Raising money for new standing frame at Icknield School
Icknield School is based in River Way, Andover and is a Special School for children and young people aged 3-19 with severe learning
difficulties. One of the school's top priorities is to provide a happy, safe and exciting learning environment for the children. They are justifiably proud of their vibrant, friendly school where all the staff and governors work together to provide the best possible learning opportunities for the children in their care. They are also proud of the fact that they were judged to be “Outstanding” by Ofsted.
Funds raised by the Andover Carnival on 15th July will go towards purchasing a new
standing frame for use in the school. Regular use of standing frames for students who are unable to walk carries many advantages. They enable the student to stand up straight which aids posture, weight bearing opportunities and muscle tone. They also aid digestion and give the student the chance to be upright (rather than sit in a wheelchair) thereby being “as tall” as their peer group friends.
A new standing frame costs around £3000 but with regular maintenance can be used for several years so we would love to raise as much as we can to help with the purchase of this frame for this amazing school so please DIG DEEP on the day!

Freemasons’ hospice donationThe Countess Mountbatten Hospice in Southampton has received £2,000 from a lodge of Freemasons.
Karl Kurn from Homelea Lodge that meets in Botley presented a cheque to Eliza Dunn, the charity’s community and events fundraiser.
The money was raised at a Christmas Carol event and the lodge’s Ladies’ Night.
The hospice provides end of life care, symptom control and respite care. It requires £1m a year to operate and donations are vital.
Anyone with an end-of-life condition is able to receive care at the hospice, which is staffed by specialists.
These include consultants in palliative medicine and doctors with other specialist skills, along with clinical nurse specialists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers and a multi-faith and belief chaplaincy team.
Eliza said: “We are over the moon to receive this wonderful donation from Homelea Lodge.
It means we will be able to continue to provide vital services and it’s great

King’s Somborne Village Hall awarded Test Valley Borough Council Community GrantKing’s Somborne Village Hall Management Committee has been awarded a Councillor Community Grant worth £750 by Test Valley Borough Council, to help fund their constitutional change to become a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO).
Presenting the award, King’s Somborne and Michelmersh Ward Councillor, Tony Ward, said: “Becoming a Charitable Incorporated Organisation will enable more efficient management of King’s Somborne Village Hall, which is a well-used and vital asset to the local community.”
John Vanderpump, Chairman of the Village Hall Management Committee, commented: “Put simply, this constitutional change will further the King’s Somborne Village Hall’s funds, helping the committee to maintain services and facilities in the coming years. It will allow us to fully co-operate with the parish council and to enter into community projects. Additionally, we
will be able to enter into contracts in our own name.”
Administered by the Charity Commission, CIOs provide charities with the benefits currently available to companies, without being regulated by both the Charity Commission and Companies House.
Test Valley Borough Council’s Councillor Community Grant Scheme helps to fund community-led initiatives. Local councillors allocate funds to projects that they identify as meeting a need in the community based on feedback and ideas from residents.

Meet the Test Valley Business Awards 2018 Silver Sponsors Test Valley Business Awards 2018 celebrate Silver Sponsors…
With the Test Valley Business Awards 2018 judging in full swing, seeing the Awards’ Gold Sponsors busily considering 223 entries across their 6 categories, now is the time to meet the Awards’ generous Silver Sponsors; representing a cross-section of some of the most established and inspiring businesses from across the borough.
Bringing businesses together to network, form lasting relationships, and celebrate
achievements, the Test Valley Business Awards is made possible only by the support of local businesses such as this year’s Silver Sponsors.
The Test Valley Business Awards 2018 Silver Sponsors are:• Bulpitt Print Ltd. • Langdowns DFK• Myddelton & Major • Webkick Ltd.
David Smith of Myddelton & Major commented of sponsoring the 2018 Test Valley Business Awards: “Myddelton and Major are very supportive of the Test Valley Business Awards as it highlights the great endeavours and enterprise undertaken by so many flourishing businesses in the Test Valley. The awards is a fitting occasion when outstanding businesses are recognised for their achievements.”
Now in its 14th year, the Test Valley Business Awards – run by a steering group of volunteers – has become a well-established platform to champion business excellence. It is a great way of shining a light particularly on the many new and small businesses in the region, all doing interesting and valuable work, but often out of sight.

Mayor’s PledgeAt the Mayoral inauguration in Romsey recently, Mayor Cllr. Dorothy Baverstock pledged to continue her quest to engage local people as volunteers in the road where they live, to support the Emergency Planning team by becoming an emergency link to the most vulnerable people in their neighbourhood.
Romsey Mayor Cllr. Dorothy Baverstock said, “There are all sorts of people who may need help in their communities – definitely the elderly and disabled but also a family with young children, blind and hard of hearing who may not be aware of warnings and so on.
“Our climate has changed over the last few years and we need to be prepared for the unexpected such as house fires etc. It is not an onerous commitment but one that can save lives.”
With the most recent bad weather resulting in flooding, the need for this project is evident and it has been decided to extend this opportunity across both Romsey Town and Romsey Extra.
Working with Unity Volunteering, the Romsey Area Aide initiative was established last year when the winter weather was at its worst with several people already setting the ball rolling by becoming volunteer local area aides.
Now that the Romsey Mayor has pledged to continue with this exciting initiative, Unity Volunteering will work closely with the Mayor’s office to recruit as many people as possible who are willing to be that critical point of contact throughout Romsey in the case of an emergency, helping people in their own street to keep them safe.

Windows 10 Update Series, No2 – by Guardian Angel PC SupportIn the last article we talked about some fundamental differences between windows 7 and windows 10. Today I’m going to talk about my favourite feature in Windows 10.
By far my favourite feature and what I find is the most useful aspect of Windows 10 is Cortana. When you first install Windows 10 a little assistant starts talking to you, it introduces itself as Cortana this is Windows 10’s inbuilt artificial intelligence (AI). AI is what everybody’s talking about at the moment; you probably would have heard the names Siri and Alexa a lot, fundamentally they the same type of AI as Cortana.
Now that we’ve established that Cortana is a type of AI similar to Alexa and Siri how does that make Cortana my favourite feature in Windows 10. Is it because it’s a lovely female voice? Or is there more to it? Well to start with I don’t talk to Cortana, I use her typing function; instead of saying the words “Cortana can you find me this file” I simply type in the box the name of the file I’m looking for. Quicker than lightning Cortana finds the file and shows it me ready to open. If Cortana cannot find me the file she tries her best to find something similar.
Let me give you an example: in 2015 I created a spreadsheet called accounts. Pretend I am having a tax audit and I need all my account
spreadsheets but I cannot find the one from 2015. So, I click on Cortana and I type “accounts 2015”. Lo and behold Cortana finds the files I’m looking for. Honestly, I use this feature in Windows 10 daily. Not only do I use it to open and find files I also use it to open programs. Every morning when I turn on my computer, the first thing I do is click on Cortana and type “ou”. Cortana remembers that when I type “ou” I am probably going to finish by typing the whole word outlook so she puts it at the top of the list because this is one woman who knows what I really want.
Not only can Cortana find files you may have lost on your computer but she can also answer questions. I must admit I don’t use this function very often, but it’s nice to know it’s there. All of a sudden, I realised I’d been talking about artificial intelligence and some pretend lady called Cortana. If we think back 30 years and somebody wrote an article like this it wouldn’t be a factual article it would be complete fantasy. I’ve got to admit that is part of the reason Cortana is my favourite feature.
Cortana

Health & WellbeingDown's SyndromeNHS Choices website provides the following information about Down's syndrome or trisomy 21. It is a genetic condition that typically causes some level of learning disability and certain physical characteristics. Although children with Down's syndrome share some common physical characteristics, they don't all look the same. A child with Down's will look more like their family members than other children who have the syndrome.People with Down's syndrome will also have different personalities and abilities. Everyone born with Down's syndrome will have some degree of learning disability, but this will be different for each person.
Causes of Down's syndrome - Down's syndrome is usually caused by an extra chromosome in a baby's cells. In most cases, this isn't inherited – it's simply the result of a one-off genetic change in the sperm or egg. There's a small chance of having a child with Down's syndrome with any pregnancy, but the likelihood increases with the age of the mother. For example, a woman who is 20 has about a 1 in 1,500 chance of having a baby with Down's, while a woman who is 40 has a 1 in 100 chance. There's no evidence that anything done before or during pregnancy increases or decreases the chance of having a child with Down's syndrome.
Health problems linked to Down's syndrome - People with Down's syndrome are more likely to have certain health problems, including:
• heart disorders, such as congenital heart disease
• hearing and vision problems
• thyroid problems, such as an underactive thyroid gland (hypothyroidism)
• recurrent infections, such as pneumonia
Your child may be checked by a paediatrician more often than other children to pick up problems as early as possible.
Living with Down's syndrome - Although there's no "cure" for Down's syndrome, there's support available to help children with the condition lead healthy, fulfilling lives. This includes:
• access to good healthcare – including a range of different specialists

Contracture of Palmar Fascia Having been successfully helped with arthritis in my knees by Dr Yan, I had no hesitation to ask her to help with my painful hand and stiff fingers. Holding the steering wheel to drive was becoming difficult due to the pain caused by the pressure of the wheel on the palm of my hand. I was unable to undertake tasks at home such as rolling out pastry. In addition at night I would be woken with pins and needles in my hand. Dr Yan treated me with acupuncture and massage. After 3 or 4 sessions my hand was feeling much better, driving was easier and I was able to bring some of my baking for her to sample. The pins and needles have completely disappeared following continuing treatment, driving is not painful at all and I no longer wake up to stiff fingers in the morning.

Health & WellbeingTop tips to prepare if you are nervous before a dental appointmentBy Chloe Chen, Dental hygienist at New Street Dental Care, Andover
1. Get to know the team – If you are thinking of registering with a new practice, try and visit the reception rather than phoning as then you will have a chance to become familiar with the surroundings and meet some of the staff members. For example, at New Street Dental Care, we offer a complimentary slot for you to come and meet the dentist, have a cup of coffee or tea, explain your fears and have a tour around the practice. You are not obligated
to register or have any treatment that day if you do not feel ready but you can go away and have a think about it. Our dentist, Julian Chen has had 30 years of experience with nervous patients and will do everything he can to ensure that you are comfortable and reassured. 2. Let your dentist know how you are feeling – Tell your dentist when you get to your appointment so that he/she is aware of how you are feeling and can then treat you sympathetically. Also the nurse may chat to you and help you to feel at ease, while ensuring that everything is properly explained to you, so that nothing comes as a surprise.3. Ask the dentist to write things down for you – Sometimes when you are very
nervous is it difficult for you to take in all the information that the dentist has just told you, even if you need simple treatment. In this case it would be a good idea to ask the dentist to write things down for you or print the information off for you. This is so that you can have a look at it when you are home and think properly about whether you would like to go ahead with it.
4. Avoid looking things up on the internet – Avoid looking at articles on the internet that have not been written by a reliable source as there can be a lot of false information that could make you feel unnecessarily worse. Also avoid looking at blogs of other people who have had bad experiences as again this may increase your anxiety. On the other hand, look at the Google reviews or other types as that can help you find a sympathetic dentist or dental practice, for example look at the Facebook reviews of New Street Dental Care to see how many nervous people we have helped. 5. Bring a friend or family member – Bringing someone with you for moral support can make you feel more comfortable when going into the practice. Some surgeries, if they have the space, will be able to accommodate your friend or family member too if you wish for them to come in to see the dentist with you. Try and chose a friend or family member who is not so anxious of the dentist but shows a positive attitude towards the benefits of dental treatment and a supportive person to help you feel less worried. 6. Before you go try some breathing techniques – Taking deep breaths, in through your nose and out through your mouth, has be proven to help slow your heart rate and hence reduce the feeling of anxiety. Count to 8 as you breath in, hold it for 4 seconds, breath out for 8 and then hold it for another 4 seconds; this technique is used for relaxation during yoga and meditation. For more severe anxiety, if you have tried the above and you still feel too nervous, you can consider the following:
7. If it is really bad you can get some medication – If you feel that your anxiety affects your daily life and you feel that you really can’t visit your dentist without extra help, you can see your doctor first who will assess if you would benefit from some anti-anxiety medication. But this will only be considered by your doctor in severe cases.
8. You may be offered treatment under sedation – Again this will only be considered in severe cases and if you require dental treatment that you would not be comfortable with. Using sedation, you are still awake but makes you feel very relaxed. You are still able to talk and respond to questions, but once the sedation has worn off you may not be able to remember the procedure. This usually incurs an extra cost and sometime your dental practice will not be able to offer this and you will need to be referred to a hospital or a dental practice that can offer this service.9. We are here to help! – Remember your dentist is there to help you and to improved your dental health. At New Street Dental Care our patients' experience is very important and we make it our mission to improve your knowledge and health for a great smile now and in the future!
Give us a call on 01264 301301 and our friendly reception staff will answer any questions you have or book an appointment for you.

Health & WellbeingWelcome to The Parchment Street ClinicHidden away down a quiet street in the very heart of Winchester, The Parchment Street Clinic has recently re-opened its doors with a new owner and a totally new look! Previously known as Parchment Street Dental Care, this popular and well-established dental practice has served the Winchester community for nearly 40 years with a reputation for always making you feel welcome and well looked after. The new practice owner, Dr Ailing Jeavons, is no newcomer to the world of dentistry as she has been a GDC-registered dentist for over 25 years bringing to this central Winchester practice a wealth of experience in all aspects of general dentistry and patient care. For the most part her team of dentists, hygienists, nurses and reception staff has remained the same during the transfer of ownership offering a reassuring sense of continuity for existing and new patients at the clinic. The ethos at the practice is very much one of committing to the long-term dental care and well being of their clients and they are more than happy to make themselves as available as possible in dental health matters with extended opening hours and an out of hours service. What’s new at Parchment Street though is well-worth elaborating on as the practice has been given a complete facelift as far as the interior of the building is concerned. As you enter the newly-refurbished clinic one gets the feeling of entering a very professional and stylish environment; the welcoming, beautifully-furnished reception area and equally welcoming reception staff make clients feel as comfortable as possible from the moment they walk through the door. The new-look clinic is now equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipment allowing them to offer clients the best in advanced dental procedures. In addition to the usual range of general dental services which you would expect to see, The Parchment Street Clinic also offers Dental Implant Surgery, Invisible Braces and the much talked about Zoom Teeth Whitening. To see a full list of the dental services available please visit their website www.parchmentstreet.co.uk
Along with the impressive contemporary refurbishment that has included the incorporation of 2 new treatment rooms, has come an expansion too of the services now offered at the clinic. The Parchment Street Clinic is no longer just a dental practice; it is now also a fully operational aesthetics clinic offering men and women in Winchester a wide range of the most popular facial rejuvenation treatments, laser hair removal and other innovative non-surgical cosmetic solutions to combat the signs of ageing, environmental skin damage and common skin conditions. Dr Jeavons is leading the aesthetics team with experienced beautician and skin expert Jo Grew at her side. Jo comes
with more than 25 years experience in beauty and skincare and between them they will be offering some of the most innovative and effective cosmetic solutions available today. It is her intention to offer clients on the aesthetics side of the business the same loyalty and commitment that dental clients already receive. Dr Jeavons and her team are 100% committed to providing clients with the best service, in the best environment with the best skincare products on the market, which is why she has chosen to take on the award-winning skincare range from the medically acclaimed Dr Zein Obagi. As well as the more common procedures such as anti-wrinkle injectables and dermal fillers, the highly trained aesthetics team is offering clients treatments such as the HydraFacial, a non-surgical facelift procedure using high-frequency ultrasound with Cambridge Stratum’s HI-FU technology and the ‘Red Carpet ‘ Peel - officially it’s called the ZO® Ossential Stimulator Peel but has earned this affectionate nickname from its Hollywood fans who see it as the ‘go-to’ choice for instant rejuvenation and a flawless complexion! You can read more about the aesthetics treatments now available at The Parchment Street Clinic over on their newly-launched website www.theparchmentstreetclinic.co.uk. When asked about her inspiration for investing in the expansion of the clinic to include an aesthetics department, Dr Jeavons had this to say: “As a dentist with many years experience, my knowledge and in-depth understanding of facial anatomy is better than most…I know exactly what lies beneath the skin’s surface and now that I am fully-trained in the different cosmetic procedures we offer at the clinic, I feel confident that my combined skills and experience will offer our clients the results they’re looking for along with the reassurance coming from my guaranteed clinical expertise”. The Parchment Street Clinic is situated in a quiet and secluded street a stone’s throw away from the hustle and bustle of city life and within easy reach of most city centre parking areas. The clinic is a welcoming oasis of friendly tranquility; the perfect caring, clinical environment for any treatment you may be considering, dental or aesthetic. If you’re thinking about dental implant surgery or if you would like to talk to the aesthetics team about what cosmetic solutions would be right for you, then you can call the reception to arrange an initial free consultation. This consultation is offered as a no-pressure way of getting to know new clients before proceeding with any treatments and you’ll go away with a well-considered personalised treatment plan to help you get to where you want to be.You can contact The Parchment Street Clinic by calling their friendly reception team on 01962 856748 or simply email [email protected]

Swimming with Mother in LawThis happened last Monday, a knock at the door,
An unscheduled visit, from Mother In Law “Will you come down the swimming pool, have a quick dip?
“It closes at twelve so we’ll have to be quick,” My costume is old; I’ve since put on some weight, But dismissing my fears, she just wouldn’t debate.
I went in the changing rooms, feeling so frumpy, Emerged back outside, so self-conscious and grumpy
It was then that I noticed her patiently waiting, I saw her attire; nearly needed sedating,
A hat with pink flowers and leaves of green plastic, A costume so baggy; lost all its elastic.
It covered her body from head down to toe, There was nowhere this bathing suit didn’t quite go,
She was obviously dressing for aqua-marine, ‘Cos a snorkel and flippers completed the scene,
I relaxed very quickly, ‘twas so plain to see, That with her by my side, no-one’s looking at me...

Before we start to ‘diet’ we need to have established a healthy metabolism. We do this through a regular eating pattern which triggers the body’s response to the idea that a famine is over. Restricting our food intake and then eating more means our body is continuously in famine or feast. So after a while we find we are eating less and less in order to lose the same amount of weight. We then crave food and so get into a pattern of over eating and then restricting.
So what underpins our need to eat more than our body needs? Why do some of us reach for food when we are down? Over the years how has this coping strategy become a habit? Are we setting ourselves up for failure each time we embark on a diet without understanding what drove us to eat more and gain weight in the first place? What are our emotional triggers and can we start learning to manage our
emotions in a different way rather than resorting to over eating? Can we move to a place where we learn to maintain a healthy weight whilst we manage our emotional triggers through understanding and attending to these without the help of food?
If you would like to develop a healthier relationship with food whilst understanding and managing emotional triggers call 01794 329278 to talk over what you may be struggling with and to book an initial appointment with Maryanne Steele – experienced therapist.

Summer Holidaysby John Chitty BVetMed CertZooMed MRCVS, Consulting at Anton Vets, Andover
Summer is upon us and no doubt most of us have plans to have a holiday in the next few months either in the UK or abroad. With all the excitement of planning a well earned rest we can often overlook our canine and feline friends and forget that we also have to make sure they are prepared for us to be going away. Here is a list of things to consider. 1. Vaccinations – Whether you leave your
animals with friends or neighbours or put them into a boarding cattery or kennels, it is important that their vaccinations are up to date. Vaccinations should be given annually to protect them against a range of diseases. If your pet is more than three months overdue for its booster it will need a course of two injections to restart this. In fact kennels and catteries won’t accept your animal unless they have a current vaccination history. Many kennels also require your dog to have the Kennel cough vaccination, which should be given

at least a week before boarding.
2. Medication - If your pet is on long term medication make sure you have enough to last until at least a week after your return. Please give your vet plenty of notice to dispense it (normally at least 24 hours), as you may find it hard to get a prescription if you only remember the day you are going away. Also make sure you leave good written instructions for your carer regarding dosing and administration of any medication.
3. Food – Make sure you have enough food to leave for your animal, especially if they are on a special diet for health reasons.
4. Veterinary attention – Make sure whoever is looking after your pet knows which veterinary practice they are registered with. It is much better to see their regular vet if there is a problem whilst you are away. Also it is a good idea to let your vet know if you are away and who has responsibility and permission to make treatment decisions for your pet whilst you are away.
If you are taking your pet with you on holiday it is just as important to check you have enough food and medication for them, and make sure you have the emergency number for a veterinary practice near to where you are staying. If you want to take your pet abroad on holiday you need to abide by the regulations for travel with pets to that country. For most people this means travelling in the EU and for this a pet passport is required. The main requirements for this are:1. Microchip. This must be implanted before any rabies vaccination is given. 2 Rabies vaccination.3. Wait for 21 days after the Rabies vaccination before travelling.4. Dogs, cats and ferrets must be treated for worms 24-120 hours before returning to the UK.
This must be done by a vet and the passport stamped by that vet. For further information on travelling with your pet look at the government website www.gov.uk/take-pet-abroad.

Out and AboutAndover Hampshire Rocks
A few weeks ago, whilst out on our usual Sunday morning family walk around Rooksbury Mill, my Daughter found a stone and it was beautifully painted with a penguin on it. Written on the back, I found a message to go to the Andover Hampshire Rocks Facebook Page. Excitedly we joined the Facebook group and read all about this new craze sweeping the country. We saw pictures of many other creative painted rocks that people had made and were hiding around the town.
To explain further, the idea is when you are out walking you search for rocks and when you find one: take a picture to upload onto the Facebook page and then hide them in a different
place around town. Rooksbury Mill, Anton Lakes & Charlton Lakes seem to be popular hiding spots, if you want somewhere to start looking for your first find!
My children love looking for rocks and get very excited when they find them. Sometimes a couple have come home and have then been hidden the following weekend, however we always hide them again so others can enjoy them too. This has also encouraged my children to decorate their own rocks which are hidden around Andover somewhere. Don't forget to post a picture of the rocks you find on
the Facebook group so people can see who finds them!
Now, on a regular basis, our 10 and 3 year olds ask to go out to look for rocks and it's a wonderful way to enjoy nature whilst doing a low cost activity and we get regular exercise as a family too. What's not to love!
For more information and to get involved please visit Andover Hampshire Rocks Facebook page or for other areas search Hampshire Rocks group pages on Facebook.

This month’s chosen walk takes us into the heart of the Test Valley with the selected start
point from the Mill Arms, Barley Mill, Dunbridge, SO51 0LF (photo 1), which is about 4 miles out of Romsey. This location has a long history behind it, including the visit more recently of United States Presidents, Jimmy Carter and George Bush Senior, when they enjoyed a day’s fishing along the River Test as part of their official tour of Great Britain.
The walk covers just around 4 miles (6 km) and divides almost equally into three segments; including water meadows, local roads and farm trails. There is ample parking at the rear of the Mill Arms and a warm welcome awaits the walker after their 75–80 minute jaunt.
Leaving the car behind we walk directly across the road, over the level crossing, with this road aiming towards Mottisfont. In just 100 metres we turn left following the gravel track that takes us close to and beside the railway line and before too
long through two consecutive gates that take us across the Romsey to Salisbury line. This is electrified and trains can travel fairly swiftly so cross with extreme care.Once over to the far gate the path leads us along the right hand edge with the fields running down to the river on the left. This path eventually takes us up to an attractive thatched cottage (photo 2) and then weaves a trail through the undergrowth which leads over a stile and then open marshland where wild flowers abound. This can be sometimes fairly boggy, hence why there are wooden bridges to carry the walker across the worst parts and give accurate direction across the long grass.
Finally we emerge through a gate in the left hand corner and cross a footbridge over the River Dunn on the left again (photo 3), but once on the road we turn immediately right aiming towards Butts Green.
Proceeding past The Green we keep to the left side of this for some 200 metres before joining Lockerley

Road and turning left to shortly pass the former Kings Arms pub and then after a while, also an equestrian centre, School Farm, which created a 300 metre long path inside the left hedge to give horses a safe trip beside the main road and allows pedestrians sanctuary from the road at the same time.Returning to Lockerley Road we now have a section of another 800 metres to cover before drawing up beside the entrance to Mount Farm, on the left (photo 4), which commences the farm trail segment of the walk. From the main road we climb up the tarmac road towards the farm, passing some business units on the right before arriving at a sharp right turn, that leads into the farm itself. At this point we need to aim straight ahead, crossing a stile with a distinctive path arrow taking us across the next field, along the slope, and downhill to another stile and footpath arrow.Once over this stile the path takes us directly through the cultivated field, but
the farmer has deliberately left a passage down the centre to enable unrestricted pathway down to the edge of this field.
At the bottom we are looking for a distinctive pair of footpath signs that are hidden within the undergrowth (photo 5) that take us over a wooden footbridge and into the adjacent field where we turn sharp left and aim into the left corner where a tiny bridge and large wooden gate take us out of the farmland and into the front garden of a Dunbridge home.
In less than 50 metres we meet a gate that brings us out on Dunbridge Road, and turn right along the road, sadly with no footpath, for around 500 metres, until drawing up in front of the Mill Arms once again.
The rest and recuperation can once again be well earned at the Mill Arms as the transport is retrieved from the rear car park.
Essential items for walking anytime:• High visibility clothing, vest or sash are
ideal. Be seen at all times.
• Robust footwear, walking boots, good sturdy trainers – normal house shoes not recommended.
• A torch (for gloomy days), mobile phone and a whistle (personal protection and safety).
• For dog walkers – take a supply of poop scoop bags.

I am delighted to introduce the work of Bespoke Biking Community Interest Company (CIC).Bespoke Biking CIC offers bike repairs and servicing, bike hire, tours and rides around the beautiful streets and hidden gems of Winchester. We also offer one to one training sessions, group coaching and kids’ cycle training to help them gain confidence and experience. Misson - Our mission is to encourage everyone to get out and about having fun on their bikes. Young or old, men, women, children and families. Our Work and Impact - We started over three years ago (early 2015) with monthly service sessions being run from the old YMCA Cafe. Since then we’ve grown and now occupy our own small retail unit in The Brooks Shopping Centre (Winchester), where we are open to the public 5 days a week. The potential benefits of cycling for the UK are huge. According to one study by British Cycling, “mass cycling could save the NHS £17bn in 20 years, cut 500 road deaths a year and reduce smog”. Our bike hire service is growing in popularity with all of our 15 hire bikes being hired over the recent May bank holiday weekend. Whilst this is very positive news for both Bespoke Biking and the wider population, we had demand that was beyond our capacity with some potential customers being left disappointed due to our lack of bikes. So we are recruiting and are looking for qualified experienced bike mechanics to join our team.On top of promoting the environmental, physical and mental health benefits of cycling, Bespoke Biking CIC offers training and employment opportunities to students and people who are out of work or who have struggled with long term unemployment. We plan to build upon these training and employment opportunities and scale up our enterprise and hope to find support for this.In the coming months a community cafe is being built from scratch entitled the Handlebar Cafe. This cafe is being built by SPUD (Register Charity No: 1160358), a charity that we have been fortunate to partner with. SPUD is a registered charity that offers free architecture workshops to young people. Over the past few years they have designed and planned the cafe, to be built at the entrance to the South Downs National Park and on the National Cycle Network, whilst we have been helping them raise the funds to get the cafe ready to build. The funding campaign for the cafe was completed this March (2018) with over £370,000 raised.Once built, Bespoke Biking CIC will run the cafe with a profit sharing agreement with SPUD. This project will help sustain both organisations and
Winchester Bikeswill enable us to offer additional training and employment opportunities to those that have found employment a challenge. The cafe is due to be completed by March 2019 and in the lead up to this we would like to run training sessions and potentially employment opportunities for 14 people. We are looking for funding for equipmentWe need to buy some additional tools and bike prep stands to increase our bike mechanic stations and maintenance output. £1200 In addition to the bike related equipment we also need to kit out the new Handlebar Cafe. Items for the cafe include: Water heater; Coffee machine; 2 x panini grills or 1 large multi purpose grill / hot plate; Microwave / combination oven; Freestanding fridge and freezer; Ice machine; Smoothie mixers x 2; Dishwasher and more. £15,000Our annual community ride is coming up. On 15th July, we are expecting around 200 cyclists to take part, in riding from Wantage to Winchester. From where King Alred was born to where he died. It s a great, non-competitive, sign-posted ride, through glorious countryside, with amazing views and If you have any questions for us or would like to find out more about our work then we would welcome the opportunity to start a dialog with you.

Service with a SmileAndover Festival of Motoring gets the green light
The popular Andover Festival of Motoring will go ahead again this year thanks to funding from St Mary’s Ward Councillors and sponsorship from BP Rolls Group.
The event, which has taken place on the High Street since 2014, brings together local motoring enthusiasts and attracts thousands of visitors into the town centre each year. Over 100
impressive and unusual vehicles lined the High Street at the 2017 Festival from classic MGs and Austins to Triumph Motorbikes, modified Hot Rods and Muscle Cars. The Worshipful Mayor, Councillor Carl Borg-Neal was in attendance and had
the difficult task of choosing the winners of the six categories and overall Best in Show.
Gemma Thompson, Town Centre Manager said: “We are absolutely thrilled with the grant from the St Mary’s Ward Councillors and the sponsorship from BP Rolls Group. We hope this year’s Festival will be the biggest yet and are now busy taking registrations from car owners from all over the region.”
Cllr Iris Andersen, St Mary’s Ward Councillor said: “The Festival brings a lot of people together in Andover whether you are old or young, there is something there for everybody. It gives me great pleasure to support it this year, as a Ward Cllr for St Mary”.
Louise Ellison, BP Rolls said: “We are really pleased to sponsor the 2018 Festival of Motoring. We took part last year and it was a great day for Andover;

something that Gemma and the Town Centre Partnership should be really proud of creating. As well as the impressive display of vehicles, it was fantastic seeing the high street crowded with people. As a local business in the motor trade for over 50 years, we wanted to support this free event as a way of giving something back to the community who have supported us throughout the years.”
Organised by the Andover Town Centre Partnership the Festival of Motoring will be taking place on Sunday 23rd September. If you have a Classic or Curious vehicle, Sports car, Bike, Military or other unusual vehicle that you would like to bring to the Festival please email [email protected] to reserve your place.

Mrs Barnell approached Happy Kitchens with a challenge. The current layout and look of her kitchen was not working, and many other companies were put off by the fact the kitchen was on the first floor and in a town house just off Winchester High Street, so parking was an issue. Not for Happy Kitchens though, we were by far the best quote for the quality and came up with the best design, leading to the kitchen pictured above installed in less than 7 days.
At Happy Kitchens, we offer a wide range of makeover services ranging
from replacement worktops, kitchen doors, splashbacks, hinges and
wirework to new appliances and much more. We also offer new kitchen
design and installation services too.
