The cheap price of the newspaper is made a big deal of by making the price stand out by giving it a metallic elevated effect with a different background to the rest.

THELONDONPAPERthelondonpaper (pronounced "The London Paper") was the name of a free daily newspaper, published by NI Free Newspapers Ltd, a subsidiary of News International. It was available from Monday to Friday each week in Central London from 4 September 2006 until 18 September 2009 (its final print-run before closure).

The week before thelondonpaper was first published, Associated Newspapers, the publisher of the Evening Standard, re-branded their existing free lunchtime newspaper Standard Lite to London Lite and changed the publishing time to include the evening rush-hour, a move that has been widely seen as a 'spoiler' to protect against the launch of thelondonpaper. The paper was targeted towards young readers, with emphasis on celebrity and more light hearted news, little analysis of news stories and uses lots of images and colour. As a consequence of the launch of thelondonpaper as well as Associated Newspaper's own London Lite, the Evening Standard has attempted to go more upmarket, emphasising the difference between the free newspapers and itself by adding the tagline "The Quality Newspaper" across the top of the front page.

Logo shown along the top of the page, with images overlapping it.

The website and date (pug) is shown underneath the logo, which seems to be conformant to newspaper cover conventions

Main photograph is of celebrities. To draw in the eyes of the reader. A small indented story is also shown with a small headline. The story is continued on another page within the newspaper to make the read open it.

Familiar faces shown throughout the cover, this attracts the fans or people with an interest in the celebrities which broadens the audience.

Various news and features which are in the issue are shown , with accompanying photographs.

News features and another called ‘The Buzz’ feature are in different colours to set them apart from each other.

Information to let the reader know that the paper is printed on 100% recycled paper , with environment friendly ink which make their brand appear more ethical.

Page number shown at the top of the page instead, in comparison to magazines where the convention is usually to put the page number at the bottom.

Logo shown next to the page number with the web address shown underneath, so that the website is shown on every page to increase the amount of hits their website receives.

Date shown in the top right hand corner in the same strip as the logo as website and logo, except with a different background.A blue and black colour

scheme is used, as the newspaper has decided this for their ‘thelondonnews’ section. Regular readers will familiarise with this colour scheme and know that when they see it they are reading the news.

Large advert positioned in the bottom left hand corner. These large adverts need to be positioned here on the first page where readers will first turn to, because the paper can sell this space and receive a good income from it.The weather section is shown on the first page. This seems to be a newspaper convention and readers know where to turn to and find it.

The weather section includes:Today/Tomorrow/3 day outlook local weatherToday/Tomorrow regional weatherWeather around BritainWeather from popular holiday destinations Weather from around the World.

All this different types of weather forecasts appeal to a wider audience, for example a reader could be just commuting into London so want to know the weather from elsewhere. Also they could be going on holiday so want to know the weather abroad.

Weather maps are used to show the weather as the reader is familiar with it being shown in this way.

Short snippets of stories from other newspapers to attract the readers of those newspapers. Also a good tool in advertising the paper under the same ownership such as ‘The Times’ and ‘The Sun’.

‘24 hrs in pictures’ feature used. There are 4 photographs on the page which have light hearted stories behind them. This could be so that the reader isn't instantly hit with a depressing story.

Website stated again.

They offer an online service for an interactive night life map which cannot be offered in print. This would appeal to younger more computer literate readers. There is also an accompanying image of a disco ball to represent fun, music and partying.

Logo shown at the top of the page. The Logo is centred and is very large. This makes the logo stand out and very recognisable.

Because the Guardian has many different local papers, the area which it covers is shown and blends in with the logo, giving that particular local paper its own image.Small internal advert next

to logo in top left hand corner. This advertising space would be one of the most expensive due to its position on the front where readers are more or less certain to look at first.

The master head contains the usual date and price, but the website is a bigger size and centred. This makes it stand out to the reader and will encourage them to visit the site. This indicates that the publishers are concentrated on getting people to visit their website.

Competition takes up a large section of the front page. This is a brilliant selling device especially with ‘WIN’ all in capital letters as it instantly attracts the eyes of readers and encourages them to pick up the paper.

Large bold headline, font is simple and readable.

Small sub-headline above the beginning of article, more direct than the main headline as it expands on it. This gives the reader more of an idea about what the article is about.

Name and contact detail of the writer of the article shown above it. This is so that credit is given to the writer for the article, and the fact that his email is shown indicates that he welcomes comments about it from the reader.

First word of the article is in capital letters to put on emphasis on it.

Large image shown next to the article. It is a photograph of the individual who the article is about. Photographs make the newspaper look more interesting than if there was just all text. The first sentence of the article is ‘EMBATTLED MP Eleanor Laing’ and the photograph of her reflects this. She is stand with her hands out in front of her as if she is restraining people back.

Section on the right hand side of the paper aside from the article showing news from the different towns within in the area. This would attract the eyes of readers that have an interest in that particular town because they live there etc.

2 adverts take up the bottom of the page. Although this is not a free newspaper, this advertising space would provide a good source of revenue.

All the articles on the front page are tasters and not full. Page numbers are shown to let the reader know where to find the rest of the article.

Page 12: A2 Textual Analysis

The header of the page contains the page number, date and website. The fact that website is shown on every page which again shows the publishers are concentrating on getting readers to visit the website.

‘At a glace’ section included down the left hand side of the page. This shows the reader some highlights from within the issue. Images are shown related to the highlights which adds interest along with the page numbers which show the reader where the full features can be located.

A slogan is also shown on the page: ‘Its all about you’. This slogan gives the newspaper a more accessible and friendly feel . This is what a local newspaper should feel like, reflecting good community spirit and friendliness.

Headline shown at the top of the page relating to the large article shown below it.

There is a large article which takes up the majority of the page, with a large photograph. This shows that the editors wanted this article to be seen first by the reader.

There are another to smaller articles shown at the bottom of the page with smaller headlines and images. All the articles and headlines shown on this page are fairly light hearted and not to hard hitting. This could be deliberate so not to scare readers away or hit them too hard on opening the paper. This again reflects the papers attempt to appear friendly and accessible.

The ‘At a glance’ section also includes highlights from their website which shows the reader that more platforms are available for them to view the content.

INSTITUTION

After looking at the various newspapers and and publishers, I have decided that none of the publishers I have looked at in my research would be suitable. When creating my newspaper I took a lot of inspiration from a local west Essex magazine called ‘In’ magazine. I then did some further research into who publishes and found out that they are independent and publish it themselves. If I was to take this idea further, I would approach ‘In’ magazine and ask them if they was interested in this new product and brand. They are likely to show interest as this product ties in with their brand and would help them achieve economies of scale.
