A SOFTWARE BASED APPROACH TO SOLVING THE PASSIVE PROBLEM
TYPICAL ISSUES WE FACE
CURRENT APPROACH PROBLEMS
• Time consuming especially for recording installation.
• No document interoperability between person undertaking survey, person installing solutions or IQP performing 12a inspection.
• Lack of up to date data redundancy over the life time of a building.
• Unsure what the IQP has checked, is the building owner getting value for money?
• Fragmented approach within the industry, everyone has their own way of doing things.
WORK FLOW CONCEPT
• IDENTIFY – Survey if required and suggest solutions for identified problems.
• RECTIFY - Install and record firestop systems.
• MAINTAIN – Via BWOF Inspections (12a)
Project started with plans and supporting documentation added through web interface. Reports can be generated and sent as PDFs via email.
Tablet is synced to server before survey, installation, or BWOF inspection is undertaken. New data collected is synced back to the server.

NEW BUILD vs EXISTING
EXISTING• Existing building more likely to
have passive issues, usually the older the building the greater the number of issues
• Existing building will usually require a survey to be undertaken whether it be a general report outlying common problems throughout, or an in depth version documenting every single issue found.
NEW BUILD• Likely to go straight into
Installation mode.
WHO BENEFITS AND WHY?
• Person undertaking the survey – Productivity • Constructor – CCC QS• Fire Engineer – Help mitigate potential PS4 liability• Installer – Productivity and accountability• Insurance company – Disclosure, risk management• Building Owner or Management Company– Risk
management• IQP – Productivity and accountability• Council – Accurate and up to date data• NZFS – Free data feeds to pertinent information such as
alarm panel and valve locations, final exits.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
• Currently android based using Samsung tablets due to camera flash and removable storage.
• Zebra mobile printer
COST
• Project cost of $100.00• Annotations @ $1.00• Survey $100.00• BWOF SaaS cost $25
BARRIERS TO ADOPTION
• Incumbent industry methods that may financially benefit the professional (but not the building owner).
• Uninterested building owner.• Manufacturers unwilling to release test data.• Ignorance of the importance of passive fire
protection.• Wait and see approach with new technology or
system.
WHAT SYSTEMS TO LIST?
• Installation Details with referenced test data• Third party assessment• VOC data• MSDS data • AS/NZ standard• EN/UL/FM/ETA standards?
