LENTEN SOUP SUPPERS ON WEDNESDAYS
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 18, and helps us gain a different perspective when we
traditionally strip away the excesses and simplify, with the purpose of focusing on our creator,
God. Our church family and community is invited to enjoy a simple soup
supper and short devotion on Wednesdays during Lent. We need
volunteers to bring a pot of soup or bread to serve 15 people during this
7-week season. Come enjoy fellowship during our Lenten season.
When: Wednesdays, February 18-March 25
Time: 5:30-6:30 P.M. Where: Fellowship Hall
FROZEN FEST—
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 6:30 P.M.
Outreach is sponsoring FROZEN FEST where all
children and families are invited to the sanctuary to
see the animated movie, Frozen, dressed in costumes
and sing along with the characters. Afterward we
will have snacks downstairs. This is an opportunity to
offer a fun time to our friends and neighbors.
Invitation cards are available in the narthex. Any
questions, call Nancy Baer, 360-825-4484.
Praise the Lord! Calvary Presbyterian Church has called Rev. Lynell Caudillo as the
next Pastor/Head of Staff at the special congregational meeting held on
Sunday, January 25, 2015. As the PNC has shared, Lynell is someone who is
easy to talk to and get to know, and she will easily become a strong and
respected leader who will also be a very good friend to the people of
Calvary. Her gifts, talents and interests are a good fit, not just for Calvary,
but also for our community. Lynell will begin serving the Lord and the
Calvary family on Tuesday, February 24, 2015. Welcome receptions are in
the planning stages — please stay tuned for more information coming soon!

Well friends, this is my last Caller article for you all. But my how time flies! I have
truly enjoyed serving our Lord here at Calvary — that is, my ministry has been
marked by joy in your midst! I want to thank you all for your support and encour-
agement as I sought to live out God’s call for me here as your Interim Pastor/Head
of Staff. Thanks too, for your encouragement in my search for my next call.
Regarding what is next for Nancy and me, my simple answer is that we are taking
some vacation time. I am looking for a next call, but totally trust the Lord to show
it forth in his good timing. So, until that happens, we are going to do a bit of travel-
ing and relaxing.
We have always felt your love and support here, and we so want to thank you for all
you have done to include us in your lives. Please know that even though Nancy and I
will no longer be an official part of the Calvary family of faith, the friendships we
have established can and will still continue, just in a new way — under what is often
called “Separation Ethics.”
So I want you to know that Calvary will always have a special place in our hearts, even though I will
no longer be involved in any pastoral activities — I will not come back to do baptisms, weddings or
memorial services. If the Lord has us still in the Northwest, we may attend worship now and then,
especially for any special event, but I will always say no to any request that would be of a pastoral
nature. Your new pastor/head of staff needs these opportunities to invest themselves into the life
of this family of faith in these special ways.
I am presently preparing for my last sermon on February 7&8. This will be a good weekend to find
final closure for our time together so that you all can then begin to fully anticipate and rejoice in
your new pastor coming to be with you all.
Blessings and grace and mercy be yours in Christ Jesus,
Welcome to our New Elders and Deacons—Thank you for Serving our Congregation!

DID YOU KNOW…
… that Davenport First Presbyterian
Church's youth group and senior pastor
joined us for the Dare 2 Share Retreat
on January 23-25? The connection
continues even after the summer mis-
sion trip.
A CULTURE OF BELONGING – PART 2 In the December Caller, I talked about some of the steps I’ve taken to create a welcoming environment at Cal-
vary Youth Ministries. It has taken years and it’s been difficult. I’ve learned that the group leader has to be de-
liberate and sometimes militant about it, because people naturally gravitate towards their friends and ignore the
people they don’t know. So here are three more things I do to try and overcome that:
Celebrate Birthdays – If a kid comes to youth group on his/her birthday, we MUST celebrate. Personally,
I’m flattered that they want to come hang out with us and learn about Jesus on their special day, so I al-
ways make it count. We buy a cheesecake, cupcakes, crab cakes (kidding!), or any cake we can afford;
put candles on it; dim the lights; and sing happy birthday to the kid. They’re always floored that we re-
membered their birthday and cared enough to take time out of our regular youth group schedule to cele-
brate it. If they’re a shy kid, they might find it awkward, but I’ll err on the side of awkward over unwel-
coming every single time.
Welcome Guests – Whenever we have first-time visitors, we interrupt our regular announcements to intro-
duce them. Again, some people find this awkward, but I find it even more awkward to pretend that
they’re not there and never learn their names. After we learn their name, grade, school, and political af-
filiation (kidding!), we barrage them with random questions: “What’s your favorite girl scout cookie?”;
“How many balloons do you think would fit in this room?”; or “Would you rather have your head con-
stantly orbited by a head of cabbage, or have a rare disease in which you shout out random facts about
Eli Whitney?”. Granted, it’s weird, but they enjoy everyone taking an interest in them.
Give Guests the Spiel – The spiel goes something like this: “Thank you so much for checking out our youth
group tonight. We’re an open group and we would love for you to be a part of it. You don’t have to be
from a certain school, clique, or religious group to fit in here. We’ve got people here who are Presbyteri-
ans, Lutherans, Catholics, Mormons, Atheists, or just not sure what they believe – and I love that! We
always talk about Jesus and God-stuff, but you don’t have to agree with everything I say to belong here.
We’re going to have some discussion groups later, and I encourage you to share your honest opinion and
ask any questions that come to mind, no matter how random they may seem. And of course, you’re wel-
come to come back to youth group next week and every week after that too!” A guest might only hear
this spiel once, but our regular students hear every week… “you fit in here”, “be yourself”, “invite every-
one, no matter what they believe”, “ask honest questions”, “we’re a tight group, but we’re an open
group”, etc. I know that after hearing that week after week, they start to model that in their behavior.
Stay tuned for part 3, where I’ll talk about discussion safety and squashing gossip.

The C.E. Ministry Team is grateful for the donation of puppets, given to us by Sue Vannatter and
Heidi Russell. They created the puppets years ago, with much help from Holly Haney and Karen
Rustvold. It is hoped that these creative "Muppet" type characters will be useful in our Children's
Church, Sunday School, and Vacation Bible School. What a fun aid in teaching God's Word!
Classes offered at Calvary:
Children's Church for 4 year-olds though 5th graders is offered during both Sunday services, with kids
dismissed partway through each service. A teacher will walk the students over to the C.E. building across
the alley. The children will be brought back to the Fellowship Hall at
the end of the worship services.
Sunday School is taught between the two services from 10:10 until
10:55. This is offered for the same age group, in the same place.
Parents pick their child(ren) up in the lower level of the C.E. building
(across from the Chalet theater).
Also during the Sunday School hour, adult classes are provided:
“Acts of Worship" lessons from David C. Cook
Facilitator: Max Manowski
Location: Sanctuary Library/Lobby Dates: year-round
A study of Psalms, facilitated by Cherie Murchie
Location: Fellowship Hall, near the kitchen area
Dates: through February, 2015
Youth group for grades 9 to 12 is on Sundays 6:30pm - 8:30pm in the youth room upstairs in the CE
building.
Youth group for grades 6 to 8 is on Thursdays 6:30pm-8:30pm in the youth room upstairs in the CE
building.
The usual program is games, Bible lesson, and discussion groups. We keep it real and we keep it fun.
Guests are always welcome.

Plastic Grocery Bags Needed
Recycle your used grocery bags. They are needed for the school Backpack Program to send food for the weekend home with district elementary students. The program is growing; the need is great. A collection box is in the church narthex or contact Anne McNeely, 825-4240 or Sande Nelson, 825-6771. Thank you for your help.
CARING HANDS SEWING CIRCLE meets monthly usually on the Third
Tuesday at 10 AM until Noon in the Fellowship Hall. Last Fall we fashioned
three “cuddle quilts”: two sofa size and a soft flannel for baby. They were de-
livered to Enumclaw Youth & Family Services for their annual Christmas gift-
giving to families. At our meeting in January we began formulating plans for
our winter and spring projects. Caring Hands is an open circle. Anyone who
likes to work with fabric, patterns and loves to cut, sew and tie is welcome.
For more details please contact Claudia Graham, 360-825-5062.
Teddy Bear Procurement Specialists Wanted—The Prayers & Squares Quilting
Ministry needs a fresh supply of donated Teddy Bears for our Prayer Bear Ministry.
Any clean, spot free, smoke free, new or thrift-store bears are welcome with one
stipulation – the bear needs long enough arms to have their paws sewn together, sit
up, and be able to hold one of the mini quilts. Contact Eva Dietz 360-825-2911 or
[email protected] and we’ll coordinate a mutually convenient pick up time.
Thank you for supporting this ministry of love at Calvary.
Thank you to Nancy Oldenkamp for all of the time, creativity and love she put into creating the decorative reader board outside the Fellowship Hall for the past 21/2 years. Nancy has graciously left decorations and wonderful instructions for the next individual(s) who would like to help keep the bulletin board up to date with what is happening at Calvary. If you would like to be a part of the bulletin board team, please call the church office, 360-825-3820.

WELCOME TO CALVARY’S NEW CHURCH LIBRARIAN! I have agreed to take on the responsibility to be Calvary’s next Church Librarian and would like to introduce myself to you. I have been working with Paul Jackson for over a year in the library. He has provided me with a lot of training and I thank him for his many years of service to the church. I joined the Cavalry congregation about a year ago; my husband and I have attended for about 2 1/2 years, ever since we moved to the Enumclaw area. This year I’ve been singing with the choir and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
I am a published author with five books completed, and I’m writing more, so hopefully that number will continue to grow. My books are all in the genre of Christian fiction and are available in the Calvary Library: Son of a Nun, Goldstone Inn, Volume 1; Goldstone Inn, Volume 2; Goldstone Weddings, and Christmas at Goldstone Inn. I am married to Tim White, who was my high school sweetheart. We both grew up in Kansas, where I remained for forty five years. I moved to Washington State when I married Tim, and we’ve recently celebrated our tenth wedding anniversary. We have six grown children between the two of us, two grandsons, and one brand new granddaughter who was born on Christmas day. Another noteworthy member of our family is our black velvet cat named Lizzy. I’m a graduate of Kansas State University with a BS degree in Horticultural Therapy. Tim and I enjoy camping together and gardening…mostly flowers until last year when we started with a small greenhouse to grow vegetables. I hope I can keep the library in better condition than I did my greenhouse (the wind has done its best to dismantle it!) If you ever have any suggestions or comments regarding the library, please don’t hesitate to talk with me. We usually attend the Saturday evening service, but when the choir’s singing, I’m usually in church on Sunday’s too.

Isaiah 40:31 - But they that wait upon
the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as
eagles...
From Th
e Eagle’s

Now that the holidays are past, I turn my attention to Valentine’s Day. For me it might as
well be a holiday. I LOVE Valentine’s Day! (Oh, I just made a pun!) I make home-made
paper Valentines and give them to my family and close friends. As I thought about
matters of the heart, I looked up how many times the word “heart” appears in the Bible.
The number varies by the translation you use, but it can appear anywhere from 600 to
800 times and that does not take into consideration words like heartless or heartfelt,
etc.
Of particular interest to me this month is the expression “open your heart.” It seems
appropriate as we prepare ourselves to welcome a new pastor. We will send off Pastor
Ron and Nancy with our love and blessings as they complete their interim time with us.
Then we will make a transition to a new pastor and prepare to welcome this person with
an open heart and open mind. As with any transition, we need to be gracious and make
efforts to help this person step into this role of head of staff at Calvary.
We will face many new challenges and some of them may push us to expand our Calvary
mindset. I think this will be particularly true as we resume our discussion about
denominational issues. It will indeed be necessary to “open the eyes of our hearts” to be
good listeners, and to take the necessary time and effort to explore what is best for
Calvary. Above all, we need to ask God for good discernment. Really, this is the bottom
line regardless of what we will face together. After all it is all in God’s hands.
