This March, when I will be in Wash-ington D.C. for the AIPAC Policy Conference for the third year in a row, I will be joined there by other members of Temple Beth Ami. While this is the first time we will be traveling as a TBA group, this amazing annual event attracts thousands of participants from around the country who gather to-gether in our nation’s capital to learn directly from the specialists
and leaders in the Middle East, show solidarity for Israel, and engage in grassroots meetings with every congres-sional representative on the Hill. This year in particular, I felt the need to be there. A new administration, still in its early days needs to see our unity and strength. In past years Prime Minister Netanyahu spoke in person at AIPAC, and while this is a strong pos-sibility once again this year, this year's conference will no doubt bring out leaders from across the political spec-trum. We need your presence there next year. I guarantee that this annual event is one of the greatest Jewish events in our nation. Simply joining together with thousands of Jews from across the United States is an unbelievable experience everyone should feel. This year you need to experience it for yourself. Continued violence in Syria coupled with the ongoing threat of Iranian ambitions in the Middle East create a very dangerous neighborhood for Israel. On this, nearly all Israelis agree, and they very rarely agree on anything. There are indeed vast differences of opinion in Israel on how to deal with these harsh realities, but make no mis-take about it, they must be dealt with.
Not long after the AIPAC Conference concludes, partici-pants, including Jews from every denomination and
political affiliation, will return home to their communities and we will be confronted with the story of Esther as we celebrate Purim. Underneath the masks, and below the farce we are confronted by the existential threat that emanates out of Persia nearly 2500 years ago. The chilling geographic coincidence does not go unnoticed to Jews around the world. The courage of Mordecai and Esther, who repre-sent a powerless diaspora community at the risk of their lives, have inspired us for centuries. Their situation, and tragically Jewish history for most of the last 2000 years, was one of fragile existence. It is a far cry from where we are today, but we do not dare go back. With a nation of our own rebuilt in Zion, and Jewish communities like the one here in the US, of immense strength and power, we live in remarkable and wonder-ful days, but as we have seen too often recently, on the streets of France and Denmark, our enemies are not fictional creations or myth. Purim is a yearly reminder that we have enemies, and that our enemies, in the end, cannot triumph. Jews in times of peace forget the first point. Those in trouble must not lose sight of the second. We look forward to seeing you on Saturday night, March 11th at 7 pm, as we celebrate Purim with our special Spiel, a musical celebration featuring Wendee and some very talented, or at the very least, well inten-tioned TBA players. Everyone is encouraged to come in costume and let loose! This year the local synagogues are all joining forces to put on an amazing Purim Carnival. It's going to be huuuge. Celebrate with Purim fun at Valencia Heritage Park 24155 Newhall Ranch Rd., Santa Clarita, CA 91354, March 12th from 11am - 2pm. Rabbi Mark Blazer

From The Cantor
February and March are really fun months for our kids! This year, in the month of February, we have Tu B’Shevat, the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat, which is our yearly holiday of the trees. To celebrate in Hebrew School, we are having our annual Tu B’shevat Seder on Sunday, Febru-ary 12th from 9 to 11:30am. The students get to read from the Seder booklet which explains the meaning of the holiday. Tu B’shvat is called in Hebrew “Rosh Hashanah Le’Ilanot” “the New Year of the Trees”.
We partake in drinking four kinds of juice that came from the fruits of trees. We also have three Seder plates filled with different kinds of fruit.
The first one has fruits that have a peel or shell such as oranges, tangerines, grapefruit, kiwi, pomegranates and mangos. . The second has fruits with pits or seeds like peaches, plums, avocados, dates, olives, cherries, apricots and mangos and the third plate has fruits that are edible both inside and out such as grapes, raisins, figs, cranber-ries, apples, pears, strawberries and carobs.
We discuss how trees are important to us for so many reasons. It’s a wonderful way to teach and have fun with a holiday.
In March, we have the fun holiday of Purim on Sunday, March 12th. The kids love getting dressed up as Esther and Mordechai and whatever costume is popular. The reading of the Megilah is also fun with the groggers spinning and all the tasty Hamantashen they eat.
So, let’s have fun and celebrate some great Jewish holidays together!

From The President
Writing the newsletter article is a kind of time travel. As I'm composing this, Chanukah hasn't begun. By the time you read it, it's long over. But one Chanukah message especially applies the whole year long -- every day is a gift. Not that there aren't some I would gladly take to the return desk, if there was one. But there are many that I wouldn't surrender, even if I could get back two in exchange. Among those "keepers" are many that I've spent with Temple Beth Ami. I'm proud of what our little congregation has been able to accomplish in our out-of-the-way cor-ner of Los Angeles County, far from the neighborhoods people typically think of as Jewish. Our Shabbat services are as well-attended as those of many much larger congregations, our
cantor is world-famous, and if you haven't attended one of Rabbi Mark's adult education classes, you are missing out on some of the best and most entertaining opportunities for Jewish learning in our area. This month we'll be working on improving our website. Our new memorial board, generously donated by the Litel family, will be going up soon. The Depression and Bipolar Support Group is expanding to an additional night. It's time to start making plans for the spring holidays - Purim and Community Seder are just around the corner. We'll need your help to make them a success. The budget and nominating committees are going to work, making sure your TBA board has all the resources we'll need for next year. As always, we're looking for a few good Mensches, so if you're ready to take your participation to the next level and would like to be considered for a board position, please drop an email to [email protected] and let us know. Rosemary Watson TBA President
Miri Gold is the first non-Orthodox rabbi in Israel to have her salary paid by the government. She was born in Detroit, and immigrated to Kibbutz Gezer along with other North Americans. Gold entered the Reform move-ment’s Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Re-ligion in 1994, and was ordained in 1999. Originally paid by the congregation, since the Israeli government did not recognize non-Orthodox rabbis, Gold petitioned the Israeli Supreme Court in 2005 to change this, and in 2012 a ruling by the Israeli attorney general granted her request. On Jan. 18, Rabbi Gold updated TBA on the state of religious pluralism in Israel.

Sisterhood Happenings – February, 2017
Wishing all of you a Happy and Healthy 2017!
Thank you to all of you that attended Sisterhood’s Holiday Boutique and our annual Hanukkah Party! We had a lot of fun together! We are having a very full 2016-2017 year!
We are now looking forward to the Women’s Retreat set for February 24-26 at Brandeis and a creative Women’s Se-der, which we are hosting for March 26 -- both with the creativity of Judith Stolnitz and Tracy Blazer. Special Thanks to the following: Shawn Monheim was truly an anchor for Sisterhood at the Holiday Boutique from the beginning to the end - the one who is always in the background yet always my right arm lending support and making an event happen – just like the days of Spa Day. Thank you so much. Susan Schmitt for doing such an excellent job as Treasurer - always keeping our records up to date even when you broke your arm.
Last, thank you to Gaylin Cohen for stepping up to becoming our new Mitzvah Trustee who will be handling mitzvah cards and the Sign Up Genius for needed meals, along with Cheryl Malinak who will be part of the committee and now handling the Trees and Water Projects for Israel. Both can be contacted through Sisterhood.
Our next two meetings are as follows:
Thursday, February 16
March 9. Both at 7:15 pm at my home with lots of delicious snacks for anyone who attends can enjoy!
Looking forward to seeing you - Francine G. Van Scoyoc TBA Sisterhood President

SISTERHOOD & COMMUNITY “Without You We Are One Woman Short”
TREES & WATER PROJECTS: The Tree & Water Projects of Israel are a wonderful way to accomplish two wonderful mitzvahs: make a donation to Israel by you in honor of someone else - it could just be in honor of that person or for something special like a bar/bat mitzvah. These projects have been very popular in helping support Israel. With the fires that occurred recently in Is-rael, this would be a great time to purchase a tree. Cost is only $18 per donation and you will receive a lovely certifi-cate that can be framed as a gift. Please allow approximately ten days for this transaction to be complete. We thank Hedy & Cal Greenfield for their recent mitzvah purchase of two trees. Please contact Cheryl Maliniak through Sisterhood ([email protected].) for your donations to Israel’s Tree and Water Projects.
SAVE THE DATE FOR: MAY 12, 2017
Our annual Sisterhood Shabbat Service and Dinner will have a theme this year focusing on Moms for Mother’s Day. Please plan to join us and bring your families to honor the mothers of your family. This event will be chaired by Susan Schmitt and Gaylin Cohen.
Maggie Anton, author of "Fifty Shades of Talmud, “ led a fabulous discussion of how she researched her book and walked TBA members through a few fascinating chapters at the January Non-Fiction Book Club meeting.
Annual Hanukkah Party & Gift Exchange & Holiday Boutique The Sisterhood Hanukkah Party was a great success with 22 women joining together for a fun potluck, Havdalah Service, raffle prizes, and a secret gift exchange. In addition, everyone brought toys to be donated to the Toy Drive for Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. Thank You to Glori Stulman, BJ Kaufman and Joyce Stein. Sisterhood started celebrating with our successful Holi-day Boutique on December 4. Our vendors were happy with the results they had as well, and are looking forward to next year’s boutique when we move off site. If you come across a possible vendor, please have them contact Sisterhood. Thank you to Shawn Monheim, Susan Schmitt, Glori Stulman and Brenda Fishler for your help.

2/24-26/17 – Women’s Retreat @ Brandeis University – ONLY 40 SPOTS - by Judith Stolnitz
DEADLINE IS FEBRUARY 10. SEE PAYMENT INFORMATION BELOW.
Our Tanakh, our Bible, was written hundreds of years ago; parts are even thousands of years old. And yet, we can continually learn from the ancient wisdom and stories in ways that impact our lives today. Where better to explore the lessons we have shared with our matriarchs than at the Biennial Women's Retreat? This year, we will be studying The Book of Ruth. Famous for its story of an outsider willingly join-ing a new tribe and giving up her home and customs, The Book of Ruth resonates with all of us. Throughout the weekend of February 24-26, 2017 we will look at two intertwined themes - Loyalty and Mentorhood. When is loyalty too high a price? What responsibilities do mentors have towards their followers? Bring these and other questions with you when you attend our Women's Retreat. You will have the opportunity to discuss them with other women from our community while enjoying the- Brandeis-Bardin Campus in beautiful Simi Valley. The weekend will be filled with laughter, song, dancing and good company. Celebrate Shabbat with other women. Eat tons of delicious food before walking on the beautiful campus. Bring your friends, bring your female relatives. Anyone is welcome as long as they are older than 21 and have an interest in learning and getting to know members of our community. We look forward to celebrating with you on February 24, 2017. Questions? [email protected] can provide additional information.
RSVP’S due by February 10, 2017:
$350 ($360.50-PayPal) for TBA members / $400 ($412.00-PayPal) for non-members – double occupancy / $425 ($437.75-PayPal) for single occupancy. 3/26/17- Women’s Community Passover Seder
hosted by TBA Sisterhood
This year’s Women’s Community Passover Seder will be a completely new experience. Yes, something very different! Multigenerational: Come with young ladies of age 12 and older - friends and family members -- daugh-ters, nieces, aunts and grandmothers!
How would you like to have some great new ideas for sprucing up your Passover Seder service? We all could use them so that our families and
friends will look forward to the Seder for the following year! You will bring home haggadahs and decorative table ideas for children, women and traditional family services, all presented to you by the creativity of Judith Stolnitz and Tracy Blazer, along with the musical talent of Wendy Hersh.
TBA Sisterhood is hosting this year’s Women’s Community Seder along with Congregation Beth Shalom on March 26, 2017 from 4 to 7 pm at the beautiful setting of Old Orchard I Clubhouse in Valencia – just off Lyons Avenue lo-cated at 25051 Avenieda Rotella, Valencia. Some parking will be available at the clubhouse, but there is also park-ing available on the street.
