We have to admit that life is short and art is
long! The value of great design will always be
there for us to admire regardless of time. And
if we’re lucky, those precious pieces will
sometimes reappear in new versions so that
younger generations are able to appreciate the
beauty of the larger-than-life designs.
This New Year’s issue of 8HOURS is
entirely packed with timeless design items –
starting from the column “In Focus” where you
can get insight of the classic 111 Navy Chair,
used in the U.S. Navy base in 1944, still it is
eye-catching today. You’ll find out the originality
of Thailand’s brand, Doi Tung that has applied
the concept of sustainable design from day one
to its business with flying colours in the column
“Green Style.” And if we’re talking about
stunning Thailand Pavilion, one of five most
visited pavilions in the World Expo 2010; we
cannot forget the name Index Creative Village
whose team is working behind the success. That’s
in the column “Possibility.” Last but not least,
in “My Space+My Design,” you’ll definitely see
how uncomplicated design of Crystal Design
Center (CDC), Asia’s biggest design center,
can give rooms to delicate details.
All of the above examples are just some
parts of the phenomena that mark their impact
on our world, community, and people. For this
New Year, let’s do “something great” to make it
worth for the future generations.
Happy New Year!

You’ll never believe this modern chair is the
reincarnation of a classic chair from 1940s.
Now appears in a new, lighter version, the
timeless chair is made from recycled bottles
and is admired today and indefinitely.
Emeco 1006 chair or “Navy Chair” has
become a symbol of classic furniture design
since the 1940s. Built in aluminium under 77
individual steps to get into tip-top shape,
Emeco Navy Chair was invented with
simplicity, durability and lightweight quality to
satisfy the U.S. military needs during the warfare.
The Navy Chair’s iconic design began
catching the attention from fans around the
world, and even more boomed when renowned
French designer Philippe Starck joined in to
create his own version of the famous chair.
Recently, it has made a big, influential movement
in the fashion and design scene. The project
“111 Navy Chair” debuted earlier this year
with the sustainability commitment to the
society. Modelled after the original Emeco
Navy Chair 1006 and featured 6 shades of
colour, each 111 Navy Chair contains a mix of
60 percent RPET plastic(recycledpolyethylene
terephthalate plastic) together with a special
chemical combination of other materials
including glass fibre for strength. The most
stunning news is it is estimated that more
than three million PET plastic bottles will be
repurposed annually for the production of 111
Navy Chairs.

Sustainable Development, as we all know,
implies economic growth together with the
protection of environment quality. The essence
of this form of development is maintaining a
balance between the human need to improve
lifestyles and feeling of well-being on one hand,
and preserving natural resources and ecosystems
on the other. Not as many businesses, including
those with advanced technology can ideally
reach true definition of the theory, but Doi Tung
has applied itself to this philosophy for over
two decades.
Under the patronage of the late Princess
Mother, Princess Srinagarindra or Somdej Ya,
who then had a strong vision and passion to
raise the quality of Thailand’s ethnic minorities’
life in Doi Tung area, the “Doi Tung Development
Project” was founded in 1988. While working
at the Mae Fah Luang Foundation in Doi Tung,
Chiang Rai province, Somdej Ya collected as
much as information and created such project
in order to help people in the location to live
better in a sustainable way and reforest the
area from shifting cultivation and Opium
plantation.
The spirit of Doi Tung doesn’t take hold
only on the brand itself, but also on every single
living creature; especially ‘human’ who are
creators of all things. Every line of Doi Tung
products is uniquely designed. They are all
made of local materials, and derived from the
hands and the heart of its local people. Today,
Doi Tung has been developing its products to
reach an international level with the assistance
from its design consultant, Paul Yuille – design
expert from the University of the Arts in London.
The most popular Doi Tung ceramic ware
is famous for its intriguing designs with the
Doi Tung identity. Throughout the production
process–from the start until finish–it is
important to make sure every step including
clay and raw material selections, waste and
defect control, time consumption, molding
process, and decaying status of the expired
products won’t leave any damages on the nature.
Not only the ceramic ware, Doi Tung’s
other green products–like home accessories
made of homespun fabrics, hand weaved ready-
to-wear clothes made of local materials,
homegrown coffee and macadamia nuts, and
orchids just to name a few–are guaranteed with
high quality and design. Moreover, Doi Tung
has marked its beautiful and sustainable spot
on to the tourists’ map as it is ideal for ecotourism
and open for public education. Doi Tung is a
place and the organization which has proofed
that sustainable development really exists
and can lead to success–as measured in
the form of profits and local people’s quality
of living.

Great hangout place for design lovers!
Crystal Design Center (CDC) was launched
two years ago and has grown to be such a new
haven for those who crave for world-class and
quality designed items. Here, not only can you
meet up with designers face-to-face, but this
center also offers you wide range of design
information through its knowledge center.
Contrary to its variety on design purposes,
the CDC’s office is intended to be guileless
style in the midst of small elements – all of
which reflect its design expertise. “Here at our
office, we focus more on functionality. You can
see that a working space is kind of private
and quite flexible. While limited space, our
office was designed to be compliant for
newcomers and less on design aspects. We
finally agreed to put the use of the furniture
at their fullest and the CDC’s corporate logo
color, which is green, to remind everyone of
our identity,” said Kitpote Chuntasto, Vice
President – Architect Design Department, CDC.
Featuring the organization’s distinctive
design dexterity, the collection of the furniture
used becomes very crucial in the eyes of
Kitpote. “Many pieces of our furniture are
imported, because we are design center. We
want to provide opportunities for our clients
to get to know the best and world-class
furniture. Anyway these items are mingled
well with high quality design of Thai products,
for example, we displayed international
branded furniture together with Rockworth’s
in the conference center area. That’s a very
good combination! We love it!”
“Our principle is: one piece of furniture
should be multi-tasking. Whether to serve the
needs of more staff getting in or the space
conforming, good furniture should provide all
the answers. ROCKWORTH furniture never
let us down. They are in top quality, blessing
designs and colors, and come with selections
of materials. We cannot overlook all those
details, because we spend long hours each
day, every day, sitting on the chair. It is important
to choose the professional office furniture
brand like Rockworth for those incomparable
qualities and after sales services. This is
what we chose.”

Kitpote added that good designs can
elevate the capacity of work. “The interior
team did manage the space and its functions
quite efficiently. They separated spacious
floor plan with small dividers so that people
can work privately on their own. At the same
time, they can work together as a team.
Even some small details like the hidden wires,
practical desks, and the option of soft tone
color have delicately chosen to inspire
people at work.”

Sarinrath Kamolratanapiboon
Partner, Business Development
dwp (Design Worldwide Partnership)
Even though Design Worldwide Partnership
(dwp) received recognition and awards both
in national and international levels, Sarinrath
Kamolratanapiboon, Partner, Business
Development of dwp admitted she worked
up a sweat in the CDC project.
The veteran project head told 8HOURS
Magazine, “We knew we had to follow the
CDC theme concept of becoming one of the
largest design centers. Back then, these
design centers were seen in the States,
Germany, and in Europe. There was nothing
like that in Asia. So we had to do lots of
researches of who the customers were going
to be. It appeared that the number one target
customer were designers, then those who
were building their house. This gave me bunch
of challenge, because we had to set our
standard high enough to show this project
to other designers who were our direct
customers.”
Sarinrath decided to develop the CDC
in a new spectacular way with the wit of
simplicity. “We avoided something replicated.
This project needed something novel. So we
decorated the Conference Center on the
2nd
floor with the brand-named furniture
and applied every corner with completely
different characteristics. In other words, we’d
love the customers to experience diverse
views and thoughts. Another exhilarating part
was that we mixed architectural ingredients
to bring life and flow to our interior designs.
When you look at the triangular plan of the
atrium, it looks similar to the CDC’s logo. We
also play with this form whether on the shape
of wall decorations or carpets to highlight
the uniqueness of the idea. For working area,
we made it an open office. A private office
would only belong to an executive, and the
rest would be divided into meeting rooms.
The CDC team has made it easier for us since
they could give us the whole concept of what
they really wanted. Apart from that, their in-
house design team also gave us a big hand
when it came to quality control.”
In the furnishing part, Sarinrath ensured
she and her team chose the best quality
furniture for everyone. “The right furniture
depends on each individual’s work and duty.
For example, a flexible working space is
designed for salesperson, who is not going to
sit long hours in the office. Then they can
work as individual and also work in team.”
“We always present many furniture
brands to our customers, depending on our
design concept. But in the end, every detail
including the looks and functionality are all
that matter,” Sarinrath ended the interview
with a smile.

Mr. Kreingkrai Kanjanapokin
Co-Chief Executive Officer
Index Creative Village
If you attended the recent World Expo
Shanghai China 2010, you’d be surprised
by the popularity of Thailand Pavilion as
Chinese spectators queued up in kilometres.
And that also means Thailand’s unique
culture and artistry has received a warm
welcome from its visitors.
Index Creative Village is the teamwork
behind the success. The event organiser was
responsible from the exterior architecture
of the Thailand Pavilion to local and international
PRs, which yielded the nation’s pride.
The expo display concept is categorised
in 3 eras: Technology Innovation, Culture
Exchange and Nation Branding. In addition,
the event marketing created by Index
Creative Village has made everything proper
to represent Thailand in the best possible way.
“We’re lucky our team has had a lot of
experience in event marketing field, which
we think would benefit this exposition.
Nation Branding is however similar to
marketing, but we have to think outside the
box. We studied our target group first. See
what they really want. Then created our
strategy to reach them. I don’t think visual
alone is enough. If the pavilion looks great,
but nobody comes to visit, it’s no use at all.
Or even if visitors decide to come and see
inside, but finally nothing impresses them,
that’s become a failure. In my opinion, good
design should be measured in all aspects,”
Kriengkrai Kanchanapokin, Co-Chief
Executive Officer of the Index Creative
Village said.
“The toughest parts in this project
are the limitation on budget and the space
management. Compared to the size of the
venue which is the total of 5.28 square
metres, it is obvious that Thailand Pavilion
is so small. For this reason, we have to
challenge ourselves how our small ‘Thailand’

would feature its best characteristics among
other countries. At the preparing stage, we
did some research on Chinese people.
I can tell you they knew so very little about
Thailand. That’s why we have to present
Thailand Pavilion in elegant way and strike
them right at first sight.”
“Finally, the pavilion was designed
under ‘Harmony of Thai’ concept. Designers
chose to present the pavilion in traditional
Thai style to express our country’s roots
and ways of life rather than in the modern
design. We noticed that in the previous expo,
other countries’ pavilions were designed in
modern approach. So this time, we avoided
it as we knew we would be invisible if we
follow the same direction. Guided by the
concept of ‘Thai Perspective’, the pavilion
featured elegant design motifs that are
distinctively Thai ancient arts. We also
applied technologies like 360-degree hydro-
screen which is over 6 metres tall, LED
chandelier, larger than 7 metres underwater
screen and other details that we didn’t
overlook. We were the only pavilion in the
expo that welcomed visitors with originally
Thai receptionists. I think we have left a very
good impression to our fellow countries.”
“What we’re mostly proud of is that
the Pavilion was among 7 pavilions that
were most visited – around 35,000-38,000
visitors per day or total of over 7 million
throughout the expo. It was voted ‘the most
popular pavilion’ from Shanghai Daily Online.
Moreover, the result from the world’s number
one marketing research company, Nielson
Company, stated that visitors now realised
that; Thailand is one of the world’s great
tourism destination, Thai people possess
friendly characteristics, and Thailand has got
rich and interesting culture. The research
has also shown that 100% of visitors voted
that Thailand Pavilion is uniquely Thai, while
98% said they feel good about our country
and Thai ways of life. 96% of the visitors will
spread their words about Thailand Pavilion,
99% of visitors will do more research about
Thailand, and 93% say that they plan to
visit Thailand in the future. Thailand Pavilion
attracted local and international media, as
seen in the media coverage worth over 155
million Baht. It is said that the participation of
the country at the World Expo has achieved
such a remarkable success and is one of
the supporting reasons that push Thailand
towards hosting the World Expo in 2020,”
Mr.Kriengkrai said.

1. Breakfast is vitalIf you think breakfast is not a big deal, think
twice. Statistics have shown how breakfast is
good for your body and mind, and can helps
you concentrate on your work even better.
With the need for various kinds of nutrition and
glucose to perform tasks, your brain cannot
function well and may risk having Alzheimer if
you keep skipping breakfast consecutively.
2. Refresh your brain with many sips of water Due to the fact that 85 % of our brain is water,
it is necessary to drink 8-10 glasses of water
per day to boost up your brainpower. To make
this possible for urban lifestyle, prepare a jug
of clean drinking water on your desk during
the work hours. Often sip as much as possible.
3. Try 10-minute meditationIt takes only 10 minutes to brighten up your
day. Whenever you have time, sit down, rest
your shoulders, and uncross your ankles.
Place your feet flat on the ground, your hands
loose in your lap. Close your eyes – try not to
think about anything else for a while.
A healthy brain not only improves your memory and concentration, it reduces the risk of Alzheimer and other diseases. Here are 7 easy ways to increase your cognitive skills…
Concentrate on your breathe-ins – breathe-
outs. This unbelievably unwinds your stress
and makes your brain perform at its best.
4. Exercise your brainTo have great memories, eat well and eat right
is not enough. What you need to keep your
brain alive and function fast is “brain exercising”.
Good examples include memorizing important
phone numbers instead of looking them up in
your phone memories, or doing some instant
calculating in your head instead of using
calculator.
5. Organize your lifeTaking notes nice and clean can visibly enhance
attention span, focus, and memory. Random
lists of things can be difficult to remember. To
make it easier, try categorizing the individual
or top-priority things from the list. You’ll receive
a lot of benefit, especially getting a healthy
brain and organized life in return.
6. Create vivid mind mapping imagesPeople tend to remember information more
easily if they can visualize it. A mind map is a
diagram or a graphical method of taking notes,
generally takes a hierarchical or tree branch
format, with ideas branching into their subsections.
The visual, which always comes with colors,
symbols, or lines, helps stimulate both left and
right sides of your brain and also boost up your
creativity skills.
7. Read moreReading helps you with imagination and brain
development at the same time. The layers of
information you receive will definitely be
decoded and interpreted. But if you are too busy,
practice reading through words around you --
whether it is on billboards or newspaper --
would actually be a best brain booster.
Use these techniques once in a while and try to slow yourself down a bit. You will find out your memory is not as bad as you think.

Although it seems like people can work remotely, the workplace will remain important, but its role will be evolving.
