Design of Steel-Concrete Composite
Buildings using Eurocode 4ItodctioSS EN 1994 (Eurocode 4) is the new standard or design o composite structures. It covers many orms
o composite structural design and provides the most comprehensive and up to date set o design
guidance currently available. This course aims to provide civil and structural engineers an introduction
to the Eurocode provisions or the design o steel-concrete composite building structures. The course
will cover primary design issues and design procedures or composite beams and slabs as used in
modern building construction. It also covers shear connections, column design and the interaction
between Eurocode 4 and other Eurocode parts. Cross reerences will be made to the other Eurocode
parts which are needed to develop design solutions, or example, SS EN 1991 (Eurocode 1 - Actions
on structures), SS EN 1992 (Eurocode 2 - Design o concrete structures) and SS EN 1993 (Eurocode 3
- Design o steel structures) and their respective Singapore National annexes. Practical examples with
direct reerence to the code clauses will be used to illustrate the application o the code requirements.
ObjectivesAter attending the course, participants will be able to:
1. Apply design procedures and standards in accordance with Eurocodes and Singapore national
annexes in the design o steel-concrete composite structures;
2. Design steel-concrete composite structures and its components to Eurocode 4;
3. Navigate eectively around Eurocode 4 and other Eurocode parts necessary or the design o
building structures;
4. Develop economical design using the advantages o steel and concrete materials to achieve long-
span and column ree construction.

He joined NUS in 1986 wherehe lectured, conducted research and provided short courses and consultancy services to the industryespecially in the feld o steel and composite structural engineering. He has been awarded with multipleteaching excellence awards by the aculty o Engineering over the years. He is world-renowned as anexpert o advanced analysis and the application o theory o stability and plasticity in structural and oshore
engineering with emphasis on robustness and hazard assessments including the eects due to fre, blastand impact loads. He has authored and co-authored fve books and published over 300 technical papers.He is a member o the Institution o Structural Engineers (UK) and the Institution o Engineers, Singapore,and the Honorary Fellow o Hong Kong Institute o Steel Construction and Singapore Structural Steel Society.He has served in numerous international and local technical committees relating to material and buildingstandards. He is currently a member o SPRING, Singapores Technical Committee on Building Structureand wherein he also serves as a Convenor on the adoption o Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 4 in Singapore andchairing several workgroups or Eurocodes 3 and 4.
