Why was it important for us to get involved?

Sport England wanted to support this project as, although itworks with the whole population, it specifically targets peoplewith mental health issues, people aged 50 and over,vulnerable young people, the overweight or obese and thoseon low incomes.

What is 5X30?5X30 is the physical activity of a healthpromotion project, which encourages andsupports people to be more active in theireveryday life. The title of the project isderived from the World HealthOrganisation's recommendation that youshould do at least 30 minutes of physicalactivity 5 times a week.

5X30 is a 3-year local partnership project,which employs 7 members of staff whowork within local communities to reducebarriers, teach the benefits of physicalactivity and develop physical activityopportunities. The team provides hands-on support and motivation to establishnew physical activity opportunities in thelocal communities.

What exactly does this project offerthe community?• 10 new multi-hubs created.

•  The re-opening of a sports hall, whichhad not been used for 12 years.

• A programme of 5X30 Network Events,which have engaged 151organisations.

• 85 individuals trained to deliverphysical activities.

• 86 new physical activity opportunitiescreated.

“When you are used to being independent,the fear of falling can turn your life upsidedown, and make you a prisoner in your own home. Now I am able to go out, I feelless alone and can see my friends.” (Elderly individual in the areawho had a history of falls and a fear of walking alone - she joined a seatedexercise group)

 

“Exercise is important to me because I had a stroke a while ago; it helps my arms and legs”  (Lisa, participant at The PuzzleTree Centre for people with learningdifficulties)

 

“I think it’s fabulous that the sports hall isbeing used again. It's such an amazingfacility, it would be a shame for it to go towaste. It’s not everyday that a hiddensports hall is found!”  (Kelly Phillips,Events Co-ordinator, Stoodleigh Court)

 

"He really enjoys the sessions and is amuch happier person for playing. He hasdeveloped his fitness and has made good friendships" (Mum of a vulnerableyoung person who participated intaster rugby sessions and then joinedlocal rugby club)
