The Indiana Four Wheel Drive Association Needs You!By: George Thomas - IFWDA Membership DirectorTimes are changing and that means we need ourmembers themost.Therearefightstofight,letterstowrite,placestogo,thingstosee,peopletomeetandfoodtoeat.Sometimesthereisevensomeneatstuff towinorauctions thatgiveyouagreatbuy.Thereareeventsattheassociationlevelandattheclublevel.

ThereareeventsgoingonthroughouttheyearhostedbyvariousclubsthatbelongtoIFWDA.Ihavealwaysbelievedthatweshouldtrytosupporteachother'sclubs.Attendtheireventswhenyoucanandinvitethemtoattendyours.Iknowitishardeconomictimesforsome,andthecostofgasolineisoutofsight,butstillsometimeswejustneedtoshowsupportforeachotheranddothingtogether.Ratheritisacharityfundraiser,acustomerappreciationevent,aclubroadrally,oradayortwoatanoffroadpark,it'sallfun.Youwillmeetgoodpeopleandthereisusuallyplentyofgreatfood,funandfriendship.Whatmorecouldyouaskfor?OhyessomegreatplacestowheellikeRedbird,Interlake,BadlandsorHaspinAcres.Thereare several other small places on private properties and severalniceplaces insurroundingstates, theyallneedoursupport. Itallgoeshandinhand,weneedthemasmuchastheyneedus.

Youknowthereareeventsheldatdifferentplacesthatmostlycatertofolkswhohavea4X4butnotmuchexperienceoffroad.Weusu-allyhaveguidedtrailrides.Thereareacoupleofreasonsforthat.Oneisyouarenewtothepropertyandwantsomeonetoshowyouwheretheneatstuffis.Theotherisyouarenewtooffroadingandwantsomeonetoshowyoutheropes.Sometimesyoucangetthebestofbothworlds.Onaguidedtrailrideyounotonlygethelpondoingthetrailsbutmaygettogosomeplacewhereotherwiseyoumightnotgettogo.Normallywetrytodivideupingroupsoflikeve-hicles,stockvehiclestogetherandbuiltupvehiclestogether.Thenthereistheexperiencefactorsosometimesbuiltupisinwithstock.Mostguideswilltrytoprotectyouandyourvehiclebutanythingcanhappenanytimesowetrytopracticesafetyasmuchaswecan.Wetrytoexplainwhywedothingsacertainway,orwhyyoudon'twanttodosomethinglikebrakeonaslickhillridingtheclutch.Usuallywetrytostartoffeasyandbuildupaswegoalong.Normallybytheendofthedayyoudothingsyoudidn'tthinkyoucould.

There more than beaches in Florida!By Annette Wheatcraft - IFWDA Special EventsWe had planned our yearly pilgrimage to Florida forChristmas.Our time to visit with family and friends, but we decided to dosomethingalittledifferentthisyear.Yes,calluscrazy930milesonewayinaJeep.BoyyouwanttotalkaboutalongrideIamstilltryingtogetfeelinginmylowerextremities!

TheNationalForests inFloridaincludesthreeforestareas–theApalachicola,OsceolaandtheOcala.TheNationalForestcoversmorethan1.2millionacresinNorthandCentralFlorida.TheOcalaNationalForestislocatedinNorthCentralFlorida.Encompassingapproximately383,000acres,it isthesouthernmostforestinthecontinentalUnitedStates.

ItisadifferentkindofwheelingdowninFlorida.Itconsistsmainlyofsand,swamp,palmandpinetrees.WehadcontactalocalclubbeforeweheadeddowntogatheralittleIntelforyourtrip.Thanks“TampaBayJeepers”!Theweatherwasgreatmid toupper60’sandsunny!SorrytohearaboutthecoldandsnowinIndy.

While we were out on the trails, we cross narrow bridges overswamp, through differentwater holes, and even cameacross ablack bear on the trail! I think hewas trying to size us up.Wehelpedafewfellowwheelersaftertheywatchusgothroughthewaterandtheyhadtotry it.Asthesayinggoes“Moreliftbiggertires”.LOL

Inall itwasagreat time in thewoodsexploringdifferent terrain.Talkingwiththelocalsandpickingfreshorangesoffthetrees.Bytheway,yeswedidgoovertothebeachnothinglikewhitesandonasunnyday.

4 Wheels to Freedom PicnicBy: Gary and Kathleen Snyder4WheelstoFreedomhelditsfirsteverPicnic/RoadTouronAugust3rd.Thiswasafundayeventopentomembersandguestsalike.Forafirsttimeevent,itwasquitesuccessfulwith36peopleand17 vehicles participating. People came fromMuncie, Cincinnati,Freedom,andpoints inbetween.AfterawellstockedpicnicanddoorprizesatMuscatatuckParkinNorthVernonIndiana,every-oneheadedoutona95miletourthattookusintoMadisonontheOhioRiver.Water levelsweredownfromfloodingamonthprior,butweendeduponworldfamousBeeCampRoadwithallofitsstreamcrossings,acoffeepotwithcoffeeandmugsonatree,tootherstreamcrossings,huntingareas,andAmishneighborhoodsinJefferson,Switzerland,andRipleycounties.Weatherwasgreatuntil the raincame,and the topswentup,butweparked in thetrees for this.Agreatdayof fellowshipand fourwheeling.Mightevenbeafallevent.AbigthanksforplanninggoesouttoJeffries,Paxton,Booth,andSnyders.

IhavebeeninvolvedwithIFWDAforover25years,beentomanyevents,metmanygoodpeopleandmademanynewfriendships.Throughthesefriendships,IcantravelthroughoutIndianaandintheeventoftrouble;thereisusuallysomeonethatIcancalllocallyforhelp.Ihavebeenonbothsidesofthatsituation.

Youknowyouaregoingtohavefuneveryyearwhenconventiontimecomesaround.Meetwitholdfriendandseeafewnewfaces.Theweath-ercouldnotbebeatinthe40’sandnorain,snow or ice. Saturday morning they had thegroupheadingofftowheelatBackwoodsandourgroupthathungbacktodotheRoadRally.Everyonewashavingagoodtimeandweevenlearnedafewinterestingfactstoboot.Nomat-terhowmanytimeyougooverinstructionsyoustillmiss a turn but you can still get back ontrack–thanksBarb!Thisyear’sroadrallywasjust a littleover100milesand threecountiesdependingon if yougot lost or not.Oncewegotbacktothehotelafewwenttowashtheirrigsandsomewentswimminginthehotelpooltorelaxuntilsuppertime.SundaymorningwehadaveryproductiveIFWDAmeeting.Thankstoeveryonewhoparticipated inanothergreatyear!

EveryyearourclubdoesaRogermemorialrun.Hewasamemberofourclubformanyyearsthat passed away. The club decided Rogerwouldwant us to remember him bywheelinginthewoodsathisfavoriteplaceHaspinAcres.SoeverySeptemberweplanaweekendtogocampingandwheelingasaclubevent.WesetupcampFridaynighthaveagoodsupperandtalkaroundthecampfire.Theninthemorningnothinglikeeggsandbaconoverawoodfire.This year seemed usually dry as we headedovertothedevilsbackboneforalittlecomputa-tionamongstfriends.Almosteveryonemadeitupthebackboneandnobrokenparts!AlwaysagoodtimeandweknowRogerwouldbeproud.

Southern Indiana Poker RunBy: Annette Wheatcraft IFWDA Special EventAnother great poker run, hope you did notmissit.Theclubdecid¬edtotryaspringpokerrunandit turnedoutgreat.Weatherwasjusta littlecoolbut itdidnotrain!Wehad26ve-hiclesparticipateandonlyafewgotlostalongtheway,nottoobad.WemannedthefirststopoutataplacecalledLeroy’smarket/hardware/res¬taurant–IguessonceyouarethisfaroutinthesticksittrulyisaonestopshopsurehasWal-Mart beat.Out front the local 4-Hgroupwashavingabakesalesoofcourseyoubuysomethingtohelpoutthelocalkidsgroupwhodoesn’tlikericecrispytreatsandcookies!Dif-ferent groups roll through all morning – JeffandPatticheckedeveryoneinandhadthemdraw1stpokercard.Imannedthecameraandtreatbucketaspeoplewaitedtheirturn.WhenwesawHarpocomingupandweknewevery-onegotthroughourcheckpointsoweheadedto the next stop.Over the river and thru thewoodstoareallyawesomesteelbridge.Ourgood friends and fellow club members weremanning check station number 2 and theysureweregladtoseeus.Theywonderedifwepassedacouple folks thatwere lostandstillunaccountedfor.Asyoucanseewedotrytokeeptrackofyoujustincaseyougetlost!Sowe started calling around trying to find themandhere theycomeuptheroadthe last twotocheckin–theyhadjustalittlemishapwithatire,butoffwegotothirdstop.Atthischeckpointyouhadachancetogothruthewoodsandintoacouplemudholesforanextracard.Itsurelookedlikeeveryonehadagoodtime.IbetGeorgewillbegettingmudoff fromthegreenCherokeeinsideandoutforquitesometime.Asweallheadedtothefinalstoptogetour lastcardandsomehamburgersandhotdogs,timetorestandreflectonourdaysad-venturesandwaitfordoorprizestobecalledoff.Soifyoumissedthisyear’seventbesureto mark your calendar for October 12 andcomeondowntorunafun4x4pokerrunthatstartsatHills4x4shopinAustin.
