It has been a productive yet also challenging two years for AIG teachers in North Carolina. With increasing diversity amongst our students, pressure mounts to cultivate gifted and talented children from every kind of background and equip them to succeed. NCAGT’s 2019 conference takes a proactive role and focuses on professional learning that bridges these potential gaps in educational opportunities and equitable services for all gifted and talented students. This year’s conference session themes include: cultural awareness, culturally responsive teaching, culturally sensitive identification, and building family and community partnerships to support diverse gifted students. Topics related to twice-exceptionality, cultural and ethnic diversity, and poverty will be emphasized.

The two-day event will provide attendees access to networking opportunities, dozens of breakout sessions, and take-home resources to assist you in developing more effective teaching and advocacy practices in your local area. We are very excited to offer a new late-afternoon keynote address on Thursday by inspiring and knowledgeable speaker from AVID, Patrick Briggs, who will focus on culturally responsive teaching that addresses the effects of poverty and the road to college readiness. Also, featured this year will be a screening of the documentary “2e2” from director Tom Ropelewski – a follow-up to his previous documentary “2e – Twice-Exceptional” – that will address teaching these students. Included with the screening is a special reception for attendees provided by NCAGT. At the Friday luncheon, the Friday luncheon, you will hear an inspirational Mini-Keynote by North Carolina’s 2019 Teacher of the Year, Freebird McKinney. Plus, in addition this year, the schedule will highlight the sharing of best practice that focuses on real-world applications in the form of roundtable networking and poster presentations.

The NCAGT conference has long been recognized as being among one of the very best state gifted education events in the nation. It is designed to provide information and training for classroom teachers (both in general and in gifted education), gifted program coordinators, school and district administrators, college/university faculty and students, and parents of children with gifts and talents. Come join us as we celebrate NCAGT’s 45th Anniversary and our state’s history of excellence, support the amazing accomplishments happening in the present, and plan to ensure gifted education’s value for the future.

We are looking forward to seeing you in March!

Patrick H. Briggs, M.Ed.Keynote Speaker

3

Mr. Patrick Briggs is a proud 1991 and 1993 graduate of Prairie View A & M University. He currently serves as the AVID Northeast States Director. For the past 5 years, he served as the AVID Southern Region State Director. Before that, he spent 15 years as a teacher and administrator in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in Texas. Patrick received his Bachelor of Science in Biology and his Master of Education in Educational Administration from Prairie View A & M University. He is currently pursuing his doctorate in Administrator Leadership with an emphasis on Teaching and Learning. AVID is a College Readiness System and our mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing ALL students for college readiness and success in a global society. In reality, Patrick believes that the “achievement gap” is actually made up of two gaps. He believes that there are really opportunity and expectation gaps that adults must close for ALL students. Patrick is often quoted in educational settings say, “ALL means ALL”.

Patrick’s current research is on African American Male achievement. He served on the Dream Team of AVID’s African American Male Initiative which completed a successful pilot working with predominantly African American schools to decrease the opportunity and expectation gaps by focusing on an asset model and Culturally Relevant Teaching for ALL populations of students. This work led to the highly successful Culturally Relevant Teaching: Transforming Educators and Culturally Relevant Teaching: Empowering Students courses that are offered at AVID’s Summer Institutes and Pathway Trainings. He is a co-author of the Culturally Relevant Teaching Pathways book that serves as the foundation of these courses.

Patrick’s passion lies in helping ALL learners achieve at high levels so ALL students are college and career ready upon completion of high school. He believes that ALL students deserve a high quality education that will enable them to make choices in life that will lead to success in any field of their choosing. His love is working with teachers – the most valuable resource in a school – to equip them with the tools and skills to help ALL students obtain success in school and life.

Freebird McKinney2018 N. C. Teacher of the Year; Mini-Keynote Speaker

Freebird McKinney is in his 15th year of teaching and has spent his last three years at Williams High School, teaching world and European history and developing the International Baccalaureate program.

“Freebird deserves this award as much as anyone could possibly deserve it,” Bill Harris said. “Every time I watch him interact with students in the classroom, I walk away inspired. He just represents everything about public education.”

A self-described “village teacher,” McKinney outlined philosophies that drive him in his career: instill in students a call of adventure, believe in them no matter what, choose happiness every day, and walk the path of the dragon slayer – in McKinney’s case, slay the dragon of ignorance through education. But his 5th and most important philosophy is to walk the path of the shire.

“The greatest lesson I have learned, and the lesson that I teach my students, is to build your shire. Build it well,” McKinney said. “And my shire is in Burlington, in Alamance County, and I try to remain engaged in my shire because a shire is more than a town or a school system; it is family and friends and churches and local colleges and universities. It is our government leaders. It is our school administration. We all make up a shire, and we all are responsible for the success of our students.”

2e2: Teaching the Twice Exceptional A Screening of a New Documentary at the NCAGT19 Conference

Tom Ropelewski’s latest documentary, 2e2 Teaching the Twice Exceptional, is a sequel to his earlier film 2e: Twice Exceptional, released in 2015. In his first film, he interviewed 2e students at Bridges Academy in Studio City, California, to understand their experiences as students. This time around, the filmmaker focuses on the teaching strategies implemented at Bridges Academy, from both the teachers’ and students’ perspectives. Come join us at this “special event” and reception.

CONFERENCE THEME: Bridging Gaps in Gifted Education: Reaching Each We Teach

STRANDS:• Bridging our Awareness of Cultural Identity and Gifted Students

• Reaching All Gifted Students Through Culturally Responsive Teaching

• Closing the Gaps in Identification Efforts for Underserved Gifted Students

• Building Bridges with Families and Communities to Reach Underserved Gifted Students

The 2019 Annual Conference of the North Carolina Association for Gifted Children will focus on underserved populations of AIG students. The theme, “Bridging Gaps in Gifted Education: Reaching Each We Teach”, sheds light on the conference focus on ending inequities across the various special populations of students who are academically and intellectually gifted. As a profes-sional organization, we are committed to bridging the gaps in academic success between those AIG students whose needs are being addressed and those who are not by providing meaningful professional learning opportunities concerning identification, teaching, and community-building. In particular, the conference will include educational and community-based awareness of cultural identity, as well as culturally responsive teaching. Experts across North Carolina and beyond will come together to provide professional learning opportunities that empower one and all to bridge the gaps in achievement across various AIG student populations while reaching all we teach.
