2. O

nce in Guadalajara, the trail goes across the gorges of river

Tajo, in the Alto Tajo Nature Park, going along Peralejos de las

Truchas, Poveda and Zaorejas. Plunging into forested areas am

ongst pines and junipers, the trail reaches Villar de Cobeta, w

here pines are replaced by oaks as the trail descends towards

the plateau, heading to Huertapelayo. In this stretch, the

Cistercian Monastery of Buenafuente del Sistal is notew

orthy.

3. The trail then continues am

ongst oaks and vegetable gardens, taking the traveller through Valtablado del Río until Trillo, co-m

ing close to the Entrepeñas reservoir. The route follows

through crop areas until the Bolarque waterfall, and it reaches

Zorita de los Canes, where you can visit the Visigoth ruins of

Recópolis. The agrarian landscape until Estremera is dom

ina-ted by cereal lands irrigated by the Alm

oguera or Estremera

reservoirs.

Estremera is the first tow

n in the Comm

unity of Madrid. The

stretch that goes from Villam

anrique de Tajo to Colmenar de

Oreja goes along abandoned quarries and m

odern extracting

exploitations. When you arrive in Colm

enar, you will see the

beautiful valley of Valdegrederos. Until it reaches Aranjuez,

the route descends to meet the Tajo in its w

ay to Real Sitio y Villa de Aranjuez, city that has been declared W

orld Heritage,

with a great historical-cultural site. The trail then goes back to

the meanders of the Tajo until it reaches Villam

5. The trail runs along Castilla-La M

ancha once again, and it re-aches Toledo, declared W

orld Heritage. In this city, the three

monotheist religions are represented – M

uslim, Jew

and Christian – in different form

s of art: architecture, culture, art and gastronom

y. The trail takes the traveller, through oli-ve groves and fields of cereal, to Albarreal de Tajo. The river Tajo passing on the route tow

ards La Puebla de Montalbán,

through the Barrancas Ravine and the Castrejón reservoir, offers one of the m

ost spectacular landscapes that can be seen from

the trail. The itinerary runs among the Castrejón and the

Carpio reservoirs until it reaches Malpica de Tajo. O

n your way,

you can visit castles, shrines and the Las Tamujas archaeologi-

cal site, at the entrance of the town of M

alpica de Tajo.

6. Starting from

Malpica, the trail continues through field crops,

passing the towns of Talavera de la Reina and Calera y Chozas.

The stretch between Calera and Aldeanueva de Barbarroya

coincides with the Jara N

ature Trail, leading towards the

Azután reservoir along the tracks of an old railway line. The

trail descends towards the flood m

eadows of the Tajo on its

way tow

ards El Puente del Arzobispo, running along part of the Rom

an road of river Uso and the Azután dam

and reservoir.

7. The route continues through farm

lands, olive groves and hunting preserves, and it crosses Valdelacasa de Tajo and

Peraleda de San Román. The track continues until Bohonal

de Ibor and Mesas de Ibor in order to plunge into the hills

that lead, through the Valdecañas reservoir, to the town of

Higuera. G

oing along the Extremaduran pastures you w

ill get to Serrejón, the first tow

n in the Monfragüe N

ational Park, w

hich you can enjoy until you get to Villarreal de San Carlos.

8. (You need to apply for a free perm

it online or at the offices of the

Park in order to circulate through the Monfragüe N

ational Park). From

Villarreal until Serradilla, the route leaves the National

Park behind, continuing through pastures until Cañaveral. The trail from

Cañaveral to Garrovillas de Alconétar goes across

varied landscapes, from the steppes and pastures to the lo-

vely picture of the Tajo riverbanks, damm

ed by the Alcántara reservoir. D

uring the itinerary towards M

ata de Alcántara, it is w

orth mentioning the G

arrovillas pine grove, the steppe areas and the oak forests. From

Mata de Alcántara you get

to Alcántara, a city whose strategic location has conditioned

its historic evolution, as shown by m

any of its monum

ents and architecture (especially the representation of Rom

an en-gineering, like the fam

ous Alcántara bridge).

9. Betw

een Alcántara and Mem

brío, entering the International Tajo N

ature Park, the trail leads to Llanos de Brozas and Llanos de Alcántara, included in the N

atura 2000 network. U

ntil Santiago de Alcántara, the trail continues along Sierra de San Pedro, w

hich houses 15% of the w

orld’s population of the im-

perial eagle.

10. Until H

errera de Alcántara, the trail continues along the Aurela Riverbank, w

here the presence of cork groves, oak gro-ves and riparian galleries are w

orth mentioning. After that, the

traveller will get to Cedilla, w

hich has a very abrupt orography, very beautiful due to its rivers, brooks and riverbanks. This w

ay, you w

ill find the end of this nature trail.
