The Step into LifeGroup Dynamic
Dear Members, Family and Friends
If any of you have had the experience of belonging to asports team you will all be aware of the unique group
dynamic that exists between all the members of the team, the coaching staff and all personal connected to the team.
It is very difficult to describe this bond that exists but thereis a very definite unity and sense of camaraderie betweenteam members.
Sports phycologists will tell you that some of the mostsuccessful teams in sport have achieved their successdue to the team moral and comaraderie of the group. They also say that the biggest hurdle that professionalsportsman who play individual sports like tennis or golfhave to adjust to is the lack of group dynamics and thesense of belonging and being part of a group.
At Step into Life we consider ourselves to be part of onebig team. Two weeks ago I had the pleasure ofparticipating in the Run for the Kids fun run in Melbourne. If any one wanted to see group dynamics in action thenyou needed to observe the Step into Life members at thisfun run.
The race started at 8.30am and 30,000 people started tomake their way along the 14km route. 5 minutes into therun I received a tap on the shoulder, looking over myshoulder there was a fellow Step into Life memberwearing her event t-shirt, like I was, we said hello, wishedone another a good run and got separated in the crowd.
After another few minutes it I run up next to another twoStep into Life members. We chatted for a while and then Imoved on. We came into the Domain Tunnel, part of theroute and there was a loud shout a few meters behind meCome on Step into Life and to my amazement therecame back a chorus of whistles, cheers and claps in reply.

Directors Desk continuedWhat an amazing feeling!! At the end we all met (300 of us) at the Step into Life meeting point. There was a sea of
blue coloured event t-shirts and singlets and the excitement was almost tangible. Trainers and members from alldifferent venues were intermingling and cheers were ringing out as another Step into Life event t-shirt crossed theline. While chatting to a trainer and his excited members I noticed two ladies hugging and congratulating oneanother. I wondered over and introduced myself, congratulated them and asked them which venue they attended, tomy amazement they attended Step into Life venues on the opposite sides of Melbourne, they had never met beforebut at the 10km mark they met up and ran the last 4 km together.
I was very proud to be part of this wonderful team we call Step into Life.

Health & Fitness Article
Honey! I blew up the kids! Are you a good role model when it comes to exercise? When it comes to the current state of overweight Australia, there's nothing remotely funny about the plague of obesity poundingaway at a growing number of men, women, and children. More than half (54%) of Australian adults are either overweight orobese, according to new analysis from the 2004-05 National Health Survey released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics(ABS). This has increased from 15 years ago when 38% of adults were regarded as being overweight or obese (in 1989-90).
In 2004-05 the number of Australians aged 18 years and over who were regarded as overweight or obese was 7.4 million, anincrease of 2.8 million people over the previous 15 years .More frightening is that fact the nation's children are a short hop, skipand a jump behind. Various current estimates suggest that between 23-27% of Australian children are currently overweight, including 6-9% who are obese.
Childhood obesity stems from less time playing and more time spent plopped in front of a TV or computer screen. Other factors:too much exposure to advertising to low-quality food, less parental oversight on food choices, more high-calorie drinks, andfewer high-fiber foods. By filling up on big servings of fatty foods and leading sedentary lives, adults are enforcing the message
that overweight is OK. Unfortunately, such unhealthy habits are leading into asthma and the early onset of type 2 diabetes (asyoung as 4 year olds!), high cholesterol, and high blood pressure.
"Parents and carer of a young child have to be role models. Part of the problem is that kids are not eating well and exercisingand neither are the parents. Adult obesity has been increasing in prevalence by leaps and bounds and now kids dont havemuch in the way of role models says Dr. Greenfield M.D, a renowned pediatrician and author ofhealthy child, whole child.
We tell our kids to get up from the television and go play while we sit watching television ourselves. We have to let kids seewere exercising; that exercising is the norm and make it a part of familys everyday routine. Kids love to be active and makingphysical activity a part of their daily routine is not only fun but also healthy. Encouraging kids to be active when they are youngalso establishes a routine that could stay with them throughout their life.
Why is physical activity so important?
Promotes healthy growth and development
Builds strong bones and muscles
Improves balance and develop skills hand eye co-ordination etc
Maintain and develops flexibility
Help achieve and maintain a healthy weight Improves cardiovascular fitness
Helps relaxation Improve posture
Improves self esteem and confidence building Provides an opportunity to make new friends
Expends great watts of energy and may result in kids wanting to go to bed early Yippee!
For these great reasons it is so important to involve kids in physical activity such as taking walks, bike riding as afamily, community based kids fitness programs or simply playing on the park equipment with the children whenwas the last time you jumped on the monkey bars? Go on, I dare you to find your inner child!
Children need at least 60 minutes (and up to several hours) of moderate to vigorous physical activity everyday
Children should not spend more than two hours a day using electronic media (computer games, TV) particularly duringdaylight hours
Here are 4 proven tips for you and your child/nephews/nieces/god sons and daughters to get on the road to a healthy lifestyle.

Health & fitness article continued
4 Great ways to be a good role model for the kids!
1. Take a good look at yourself.
At least 80 percent of overweight children have overweight parents. Genetic factorsare undoubtedly important predictors of childhood obesity, yet the rise in proportion ofchildhood obesity is not satisfactorily explained by genetics alone; environmentalfactors that affect energy intake and energy expenditure (increased sedentary use ofmodern media such as television and computers) are likely to have played a moresignificant role.
Consider whether you encourage your children to be sedentary or to eat poorly, eitherdirectly or indirectly. Parental influences are decisive, because the dietary patternsset in childhood tend to be permanent..Be prepared to make changes in your ownbehaviors to become a good role model.
2. Teach a child how to tell when he/she is hungry.
Learning to recognize the sensations of hunger and satiety may help a child avoid thekind of mindless eating that causes excess weight. Respect natural hunger instinctsand dont insist young children finish everything on their plates. its our job to puthealthy food on their plate; its their job to decide what and how much to eat.
3. Get active!
Studies have found that even fidgeting helps maintain normal weight, so clearly anyamount of exercise can have a beneficial effect. Start small. Take the stairs ratherthan the escalator, encourage walking and cycling to school. Work up to a total of 45minutes of exercise (done all at once or throughout the day). If you take a positiveapproach toward movement, your children will too. Even the mundane householdchores such as sweeping, washing the car, vacuuming, etc. can seem like fun. spendmore time watching screens than they do at any other activity... except sleeping! Nochild should have a TV in his or her bedroom. Limit your childrens free-time use ofthe TV, video and computer to just one hour a day during the week (you can loosenup a little on the weekends). Television viewing of more than two hours a day inchildhood and adolescence is associated with poor fitness, raised cholesterol andbeing overweight in adulthood. This frees up time for physical activity and reduces thenumber of ads for junk food and junk behavior that your children see.
4. Educate on healthy eating habits.
Overweight children might not eat a greater volume of food than normal-weightchildren, but their choices may be higher in empty calories from added fat and sugar.Educate your child as to which foods are for "every day" and which are for"occasional" consumption through the casual conversations you have while buying, preparing, or eating food together. Instill good eating habits with the goal ofmaintaining weight rather than gaining weight as kids grow taller. The last thingyoushould do as a parent/carer is put your child on a traditional food-restricting diet, telling a child something is off limits will only serve to boost the burden on their
strained shoulders. And most likely little Jack or Susie already bears a stigma aboutbeing overweight.
By offering various opportunities for physical activity, you can help children developan active approach to life that may stay with them for the rest of their lives. Be agood role model; stay fit and healthy for life; for you and the kids.
