With a mission to improve the quality of life for the residents of the Drouillard Road Community and the parents, children and youth in the Grandview neighbourhood, Drouillard Place has had a tremendous impact on the quality of life in these communities. Drouillard Place, which is a registered, nonprofit charitable organization located in the heart of an identified core area of the city of Windsor, has a unique history that is intertwined with the history of Ford City itself.

The Drouillard Road area was originally called Ford City and then over time became known as East Windsor. It is one of the oldest communities of what is now the city of Windsor. It has a very long, rich and somewhat turbulent history. The area thrived during the twenties and thirties and was particularly well known during the war years as it was a manufacturing hub for the war effort.

After the war, people began to move to the suburbs, the city of Windsor evolved to take centre stage and when the Ford Motor Company decided to move part of its operation to Oakville in 1953, the Drouillard area began to deteriorate both commercially and residentially.

During the early seventies, the East Windsor Citizens Committee and Holy

Rosary Church believed that if they were to make a difference in the area, an organization with a physical presence was necessary to consolidate resources and to begin to develop services based on needs expressed by both the residents and businesses of the area. Thus Drouillard Place came into being and it was incorporated in June of 1979 by these two organizations and officially opened its doors in October 1979. It struggled for identity in the first few months but following the hire of Marina Clemens, the community began to understand and recognize the role of Drouillard Place.

Marina Clemens met with residents, business people and social service agencies to identify what unique core programs and services Drouillard Place should embrace to serve residents and businesses in the heart of this community.

For the first few years Drouillard Place struggled to keep its doors open, supported by its two founders and Bingo revenues. Then, in 1986 after much hard work by the board and Marina Clemens, Drouillard Place became a United Way member agency. This provided the organization with core stable funding and opened the door to many other potential streams of funding.

In 2000, Drouillard Place was asked by the Provincial Government if it would consider taking over an Early Years Centre in the Grandview area. Renovations were made and the new site was opened in 2001. Since then Drouillard Place has added both an After School and Teen Centre in partnership with the Windsor Essex Community Housing Corporation and the City of Windsor.

In the early 90s Drouillard Place worked diligently with the Provincial

Government to establish Drouillard Place Terrace, a 59 unit building offering affordable housing for the neighbourhood. An old warehouse in the 900 block of St. Luke was converted and opened in 1992. It has bachelor, one, two, and three bedroom units which are geared to income rentals.

Presently, Drouillard Place programs cover a wide range of services meeting the needs of a very diverse population. They include an Early Years Centre and After School program, a renewed and expanded Food Security program, and a Social Work department with one part-time MSW and two social work interns each year to assist in this ever growing program.Over the past few years, through a Poverty Reduction grant, theyve been

able to expand their youth services to include a Teen Drop-In program, now located at 1052 Drouillard Rd.

In 2009, Drouillard Place received a United Way Neighbourhood Strengthening Grant which allowed it to work more closely with both the business and resident group within the Drouillard neighbourhood and has received confirmation from the United Way that it will continue to receive funding for

    Message from Fr. Joe Gosselin

On behalf of the board members of Drouillard Place I would like to thank you for being here tonight to help celebrate our 35th Anniversary. Your attendance at our first attempt hosting a Gala is much appreciated. Sincere thanks to all our sponsors and donors, to Larry Horwitz and the staff of Waters Edge Event Centre and to Koolinis Catering. Special thanks to Kim Spirou, Board Member, and the Charity Chix for hosting this evening, and to our own staff for their hard work and dedication in planning this evening.I am proud to have served on the Drouillard Place Board these past 28 years and as Chair for the past 15 years or so, especially working with Marina Clemens, our only Executive Director. Without Marinas foresight, dedication and wisdom, and that of the present and past board members, there would not be a Drouillard Place. My ties with the Drouillard area (Ford City) go back to 1985 when I was appointed Principal of Gordon McGregor School. I have witnessed our original building expand along with our programming to assist this wonderful neighbourhood and that of the Grandview area. This neighbourhood is once again, in my mind, thriving and receiving positive vibes from many sources. I look forward to continuing to serve Drouillard Place, and with a successful first Gala tonight, seeing all of you at Gala 2.Jim Sparrow, Chair, Drouillard Place Board

It was either late 1978 or early 1979... Our Lady of the Rosary Church was behind me. I had just walked through the Drouillard Underpass and was climbing the small incline.

My mind was mulling over the difficulties so many of the area residents were having. What would be the best way to serve them? And then with absolutely no advance warning the inspiration came. . . and it was this. . . create a centre where the residents could find advice to help them navigate City Hall to benefit from whatever programs were available to Windsorites. My hope was to enlist the help of attorneys-in-training from the University, as advisors and advocates.

As I kept walking the vision got more comprehensive. Why not have many other support services made available. . . food, recreation, family activities, etc?

By the time I got to the top of that incline I had already decided to share this with Gino Marcus. He instantly ran with the idea. And within two months we were actually preparing a facility for such a purpose in an old, unused building. We spurred and challenged each other on.

The truth is, anyone can have ideas, but my inspiration, I happily and freely admit, more than likely, would have never come to be without Ginos drive and the funds being raised by the community through its Bingo proceeds and all the wonderful people who constantly were working to better the neighborhood.

Once all was prepared for the grand opening, as fate would have it, a week before it was dedicated, I was transferred to Cambridge, MA to direct our residential graduate level seminary. But I left happy knowing in my gut that it would have a great future.

I thought my leaving would signal the end of my involvement with the now named Drouillard Place. However, it was not to be.

In 1995 I was asked to serve once again at Our Lady of the Rosary.

This of course meant a new involvement with Drouillard Place. And I was more than willing to serve once again in whatever capacity. I was soon appointed to its board.

I was tapped to help with the fund-raising venture to update the Drouillard Place facility. Along with other board members, notably its superbly qualified Executive Director, Marina Clemens, Sr. Eileen, Pete Beauregard among others,we set to work. And together we got the job done with each of us using our particular talents. The wider community responded beautifully. I realized even more deeply how much and how wonderfully Drouillard Place had thrived since its founding.

What a tremendous amount of good it has done and is still doing. It does it very quietly helping this one or that one, this family or that family. It does it with great respect always scrupulously maintaining the God-given dignity of each person. Thousands have been helped, one by blessed one.

Once again we are asked to rally together on this new fund-raising venture. And again it is under the guidance and supervision of Marina Clemens, blessedly still its Executive Director. We are called to affirm her and her team of professionals and volunteers. They are asking for our tangible financial support. How can we say No to them who, over the course of these many years, have helped so very many?

It is our privilege to respond positively. Since its earliest founding days it has succeeded way beyond anyones dreams. The vision lives on.

Ultimately, in its most profound sense, it has been Gods work. We have been his instruments. And we are indeed fortunate to have been called to it.

With much brotherly love, Fr. Joe Jay Gosselin, M.S.

the next five years.Drouillard Place has made a significant

difference on the overall quality of life, especially for children, in this disadvantaged community.

By modeling the value of hard work, determination and collaboration, youths learn they can achieve success.

Thanks to all of the programs and services offered by Drouillard Place there are countless success stories and lives virtually transformed. Above all else Drouillard Place has a philosophy that

puts people first. According to Executive Director Marina Clemens, Drouillard Place has always worked with people, not for people. We take people to where they want to go, following their aspirations and hopes, not where we think they should

go, says Clemens. We offer services but dont manipulate or force people to avail themselves of our programs. We believe in the dignity and worth of each individual and in treating them with the utmost of respect as a basis to establish strong relationships and trust. We believe that every person has potential and we believe in the importance of working with individuals and communities on the basis of their strengths and empowering them to overcome their challenges and realize their full potential, adds Clemens.

With the help of donors, funders, sponsors, staff, volunteers and co-op students from the University of Windsor and St. Clair College, Drouillard Place has been able to support and enhance the Drouillard Road area for 35 years and plans to continue to do so for years to come.

Their funding is diverse and comes from many sources including United Way, Ontario Early Years, Federal Government Summer Canada, Private Donations, Bingo and fundraising efforts, Poverty Reduction Grants, and Service Associations. Over the years, Drouillard Place has developed many partnerships and has, through its staff and board members, become involved in the major concerns of Affordable Housing, Neighbourhood Renewal, Children and Youth services which all lead to finding solutions to assist in eradicating poverty from these communities. Drouillard Place remains close to its roots and to the people within both neighbourhoods. The volunteer board is drawn from the community, area schools, the business sector and area churches.

A community is like a ship; everyone ought to be prepared to take the helm." ~ Henrik Ibsen~

I included both the logo and the quote from Henrik Ibsen above because I firmly believe that both represent the true essence of Drouillard Place. Throughout its remarkable thirty-five years in our community, Drouillard Place, and the dedicated staff, have empowered individuals within the Drouillard and Grandview neighbourhoods to take the helm of several projects and initiatives within the community. As one of the most historic and storied areas of the city, it has faced numerous challenges over the years, but one thing remained constant, the closeness and determination of the families who live there to see their community grow and prosper.Drouillard Place has been at the heart of this effort and has provided a variety of supportive services and resources that respects the unique character of the community and the unique needs of the people who live there.Congratulations as you celebrate this milestone and my best wishes to all of the staff, volunteers and community partners that contribute to your success.Sincerely

Ford Annex Community Outreach Fund congratulates Drouillard Place on its 35th Anniversary.

Philanthropic, entrepreneurial, resilient, hard-working, self-less, loyal, caring and a person who is not afraid to move a mountain are just a few of the adjectives that aptly capture the essence of Al Quesnel. Those of you who know Al or have been the fortunate recipient of his supreme generosity will agree with me when I say that he is an extraordinary individual with an exceptional record of achievement.

Raised in Windsor, Al attended Kennedy high school and went on to study law and security at St. Clair College. Al was always naturally athletic and took an early interest in body building. He won several awards as a body builder which later led him to take up work in a local health club. This interest eventually sparked a desire to open up his own Health Club and with a great deal of grit, determination and hard work, over time Al became a major owner and operator of a chain of health clubs known as The Athletic Clubs which he established in more than a dozen locations throughout Ontario.

Al has earned many accolades and awards over the years including being named Business of the Year by the Canadian Italian Business and Professional Association and he was also named Outstanding Philanthropist of the Year by the Association of Fundraising Professionals.

Al recently sold his health clubs and has retired.

Feeling very blessed with his success in busi-ness, and one not to rest on his laurels, Al turned his attention to helping the less fortunate and marginalized in our community and throughout the world.

His generosity has touched and transformed the lives of literally thousands of individuals. Al has donated millions of dollars to local and inter-national charities and non-profit organizations.

This year the Alan Quesnel Family Foundation is the presenting sponsor for the Drouillard Places 35th Anniversary Gala. Non-profit organizations, both here and abroad, have benefited tremendously from Als generosity and dedication to his community.

On the international front, Al has invested millions of dollars in projects to alleviate the suffering of the poor in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Africa. Most recently, Al sponsored the building of an entire new village for people living in squalid conditions on top of a mountain in Haiti.

When Al climbed to the top of that mountain and saw the conditions the people endured he was greatly moved and he made a commitment to relocate every single family from that moun-tain into brand new homes on land he purchased at the mountains base. He also furnished those homes and drilled a well so these villagers would

have access to clean potable water. This was a massive humanitarian effort accom-plished by an extraordinary humanitarian.

By no means a comprehensive list, some of the local recipients of his altruistic nature include a $1.25 million gift to Assumption Church for its restoration, $200,000 to the Windsor Residence for Young Men, $100,000 to Big Brothers and Big Sisters, $210,000 to The Miracle League to refurbish the baseball field for children with dis-abilities, $125,000 to Montessori schools Aero-smith program, $100,000 to Canadian Mental Health, $100,000 to the Toldo Neurobehavioural Institute at Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare, $50,000 to Alzheimers Society, $50,000 to the Welcome Centre Shelter for Homeless Women, and very recently Al donated $100,000 to In Honour of the Ones We Love. This past spring Al generously donated $30,000 to Drouillard Place which pro-vides the critical support needed to continue the work in the Drouillard Road area helping the dis-advantaged and poor through its programs and services. Al is a generous soul who believes deeply in service above self. He has indeed left an indel-ible mark on the Windsor Essex community.
