Professional Competency Areas for Student Affairs Educators#3DLEAD
In 2009, ACPACollege Student Educators International and NASPAStudent Affairs Administrators in Higher Education collaborated to establish a common set of professional competency areas for student affairs educators.
10
Student learning and success spans environments that are both physical and virtual; thus, student affairs educators must proactively engage students within these settings.
Focus is broader and inclusive of innovation, meaning that student affairs work is dynamic and must use a variety of tools to engage students in learning.Technology as a student affairs professional competency

Three Dimensional Leadership#3DLEAD
Social media = 1 of the tools29
#3DLEAD
Genesis of the 3-D model
2013-2014 was a time of tremendous learning about leadership for me my students challenged current paradigms about leadership30
Traditional Leadership Paradigms
Leadership is a relational and ethical process of people together accomplishing a positive change Astins Social ChangeKomives, Lucas, McMahons Relational Leadership#3DLEAD
5 minutes on this slide ask if people are familiar with these models if not take the five minutes. If they are go through in 2 minutes.
Slide is INTENTIONALLY boring 31
The Future: Leadership in Three Dimensions

32
First Dimension
#3DLEAD
Focus on the first dimension being GOOD. The current paradigm works. Relational leadership is fantastic. Real relationships in the real world.
Leadership is a relational and ethical process of people together attempting to accomplish positive change
33
The Second DimensionEnter the Matrix#3DLEAD
Second Dimension otherwise known as the MatrixWhat leadership looks like in the virtual world looks very different than in the real worldConsider World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Call of Duty or any other virtual online world students engage in there exists a leadership structure guilds, tribes, etc.34
Welcome to the Third Dimension#3DLEAD
The third dimension Integration Three Dimensional Leaders know how to lead in the real world, know how to lead online and can fluidly move between both.
Josie Ahlquist. She and I connected via twitter first. Then met up at ACPA to engage in this conversation. Then came to our campus to train our student staff on digital leadership. 35
Big Barrier to Integration
#3DLEAD#3DLEAD
From a social justice perspective, Money and access are the biggest barriers from moving people from the first dimension to the second dimension.
Fresno State started a tablet program grants for students to purchase tablets. They have 70% first gen and 74% pell grant students. Most students are low income. President Castro identified this as a major barrier to the success of our under-represented students. The goal would be to no longer need textbooks and reduce costs for students. But we are not there yet and need to recognize the impact technology has on those who have vs those who dont.36
#3DLEAD
Becoming integrated:
To engage in the second dimension we just need to ride the wave pushing folks to engage in the digital world
We encouraged staff to TAKE OUT their phones during training37
#3DLEAD
And what we found were different staff engaging than in the actual sessions38
Tremendous Challenge
#3DLEAD
But we also need to engage second dimensional leaders to engage in the first dimension this is a greater challenge, with very few answers.
The problem is these students have MEANING in the virtual world. These students feel competent and powerful in the virtual world. They dont feel this way in the real world. How do we get them taking risks?
LARPing, youtube meet and greets, etcWearables the apple watch literally allows you to send your heartbeat to someone else talk about integrated

Latest is Pokemon Go - gets people from the virtual to the real
