FROM THE CAT AWARDS CHAIR
To all cast, creative, technical and production personnel in our CAT familyYou have all participated and some have been considered good enough to be nominated.
Usually there will be another five nominees in your category. Mostly only one, unusually two, can take the award; the recognition you hope for.
For those who didn’t manage to get a nomination this year: your participation is the key to your personal development which is an opportunity for self-reflection and self-awareness.
It is an exercise in both confidence building and self-promotion.
Shed that thin skin, don’t take ’rejection’, if that’s how you see it, personally and try again.
Throwing your hat into the ring means that you have been willing to be judged by peers and mentors.
This is invaluable feedback that money can’t buy.
You are part of the big wonderful world of theatre.
That passion will see you participate in many more shows.
I urge you to stay visible, hone your skills and build your craft, expand your horizons and seek associates beyond your chosen theatre company.
Always strive to have something to shout about rather than be simply shouting.
And to those who have been nominated for an award: accepting a nomination takes courage and for that you are to congratulated.

CAT AWARDS RULES AND DEFINITIONS
Scope of the AwardsFully-professional productions are excluded; only amateur and pro–am productions will be considered.Professional inputPersonnel who are engaged on a fully professional basis in any capacity are not eligible for an award. For the purposes of the CAT Awards, a professional is someone who is being paid at or near Equity rates and/or who makes their living predominantly as (or is recognised as) a theatre professional, including performer, director, designer or technician.Youth productions and categories‘Youth’ is considered to finish at the end of high school, therefore university theatre companies are considered in open categories.School and youth productions are also eligible for nomination in open categories that do not have a corresponding youth category.Young people performing children’s roles in non-youth productions (for example, Oliver, Annie, the Banks children, young Peter Allen) are eligible for awards in youth performance categories.Adults appearing in a school or youth production are eligible for awards in the open categories, not the youth categories.Lead vs featured rolesIn deciding whether a role is leading or featured, the judges are guided by how they are defined in the website stageagent.com.Number of nominations in each categoryThere is no limit to the number of categories in which a production can receive nominations, nor is there a limit to the number of times a company can appear in the final nomination list for any category. The judges will usually make only six nominations and one award in each category. However if the standard is particularly high in some categories we may make more than six nominations, and may make joint awards.Judges participating in productionsJudges are not expected to withdraw from active participation in productions. However, if they are involved in a production, their contribution is not eligible for an award.Judges take no part in discussions or decisions on shows with which they are associated and leave the room during any such discussion.Judges act as individuals and not as representative of any company that they are associated with.
