2. Before the Resurrection of Jesus Christ,
the Sabbath day commemorated
Gods day of rest after He finished the Creation.
3. Now the
Sabbath
also commemorates the
Resurrection
of
Jesus Christ.
4. The
Purpose
of the
Sabbath Day
is to direct our thoughts and actions toward
God.
5. History of the Sabbath
6. Jesus healed on the Sabbath
for the benefit of man.
7. The Lord has given us a direct commandment
in these days that we too should honor Sunday,
The Lords Day,
as our Sabbath
8. Keeping the Sabbath Day Holy
9. We should perform no labor that
would keep us from giving our full attention to spiritual
matters.
10. President Spencer W. Kimball cautioned,
The Sabbath is
a holy day in
which to do
worthy and holy
things. Abstinence from work and recreation is important, but
insufficient. The Sabbath calls for constructive thoughts and acts,
and if one merely lounges about doing nothing on the Sabbath, he is
breaking it. To observe it, one will be on his knees in prayer,
preparing lessons, studying the gospel, meditating, visiting the
ill and distressed, writing letters to missionaries, taking a nap,
reading wholesome material, and attending all the meetings of that
day at which he is expected.
11. Take time [on the Sabbath] to be together as families to
converse with one another, to study the scriptures, to visit
friends, relatives, and the sick and lonely. This is also an
excellent time to work on your journals and genealogy.
12. RighteousThings We CanDoTo Keep TheSabbathDay Holy:
13. reading the scriptures and the words of our Church
leaders;
our loved ones;
singing hymns;
with praise and thanksgiving;
14. preparing family history records and personal
histories;
bearing our testimony to family
members and sharing spiritual
experiences with them;
and loved ones;
15. sharing time with children and others in the home.

17. Elder Dallin H Oaks explained that we need to make
Spiritual preparations for the events prophesied at
the time of the Second Coming:
What if the day of His coming were tomorrow? If we knew
that we would meet the Lord tomorrowthrough our
premature death or through His unexpected comingwhat
would we do today? What confessions would we make?
What practices would we discontinue? What accounts would we settle?
What forgivenesses would we extend? What testimonies would we
bear?
If we would do those things then, why not now? Why not seek peace
while peace can be obtained? If our lamps of preparation are drawn
down, let us start immediately to replenish them[by keeping the
Sabbath Day holy].
We need to make both temporal and spiritual preparation for the
events prophesied at the time of the Second Coming. And the
preparation most likely to
be neglected is the one less visible and more difficultthe
spiritual. A 72-hour kit of temporal supplies may prove
valuable for earthly challenges, but, as the foolish virgins
learned to their sorrow, a 24-hour kit of spiritual
preparation is of greater and more enduring value.
(Elder Dallin H Oaks, Preparation for the Second Coming, Gen. Conf.
Apr 2004)
18. If we honor the Sabbath day,
we may receive great spiritual and temporal blessings.
19. Our Invitation from the Lord of the Sabbath
Now let us all with one accord sing praises to our Heavenly
Lord
Blessings for Observing the Sabbath
