This paper introduces a (updated 09/05/07) draft text for a harmonised AIC to beissued by airports in support of their Mode S multilateration implementation:

    AICXX/2007

    1. Introduction

XXXX airport has installed an improved surface surveillance system, using Mode-Smultilateration. Operational trials using this system will commence on dd/mm/yy.

    2. Operation of Mode S transponders when the aircraftis on the ground

Aircraft operators intending to use XXXX airport shall ensure that the Mode Stransponders are able to operate when the aircraft is on the ground.

    Pilots shall:

Select AUTO mode and assigned Mode A codeIf AUTO mode is not available Select ON (e.g. XPDR) and assigned Mode A code

From the request for push back or taxi whichever is earlier.

After landing, continuously until the aircraft is fully parked on stand

When fully parked on stand select STBY

Whenever the aircraft is capable of reporting Aircraft Identification (i.e. callsign usedin flight), the Aircrafts Identification should also be entered from the request for pushback or taxi whichever is earlier (through the FMS or the Transponder Control Panel).Air crew must use the ICAO defined format for entry of the Aircraft Identification (e.g.AFR6380, SAS589, BAW68PG)

To ensure that the performance of systems based on SSR frequencies (including

airborne TCAS units and SSR radars) is not compromised, TCAS should not beselected before approaching the holding point. It should then be deselected aftervacating the runway.

For aircraft taxiing without flight plan, Mode A code 2000 should be selected.
