FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Prayer
O Immaculate Mary, Help of Christians, Queen of heaven and
earth, and tender Mother of humanity, at this time when a
pandemic threatens all your children, we entrust to you our nation,
Australia, and all who live in this country.
We commit to your intercession all the members of our community, beginning with the weakest ones, from the unborn to the sick, the
disabled and the elderly.
We commit to you our families, our young and old, and all who are
vulnerable, those who are quarantined or anxious.
We entrust to your Immaculate Heart those who have lost their livelihood or
employment, our pastors and other essential service workers, and our
leaders at this time.
We implore your intercession especially for the protection of
doctors and nurses and those who minister to the contagious sick in this
crisis.
Reign over us, Mother of God, and teach us how to make the Heart of Jesus reign and triumph in us and
around us, as it has reined and triumphed in you!
Amen.

Dear Parents, Students and Friends of the College,
Feast of Mary Help of Christians, Patroness of Australia - 24 May
Mary Help of Christians has been the official patroness of Australia since 1844. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect Australians’ lives, including our worship, the Australian Catholic Bishops have entrusted the country to the care of Mary Help of Christians on her feast day, seeking her intercession for the safety of all our people especially in this time of COVID-19 pandemic. Her feast day is celebrated on May 24, which this year coincides with the Feast of the Ascension. The entrustment of Australia to Mary Help of Christians can therefore take place on 24 or 25 May.

Return to face-to-face Learning
Yesterday we welcomed all year groups back to face-face-to-face learning and we are very pleased to see students back in classrooms. Thank you for your persistence in assisting your children with their learning in addition to your own work and family commitments. Thank you also to our staff, teachers and support staff, for the professional manner in which they adapted to remote learning and now assisting students with their transition back to school. Our students are enthusiastic and eager to reconnect with their peers and teachers. Students are encouraged to continue the increased hygiene measures we have in place and this includes bringing their own equipment to avoid sharing.
As per government advice, we have reverted back to our normal attendance requirements and any student who does not attend will be deemed absent. It is expected that the College is notified as to why the student is not in attendance, either via Compass or written documentation to the student’s pastoral care teacher.
Significant changes to normal school routines, coupled with anxiety around the Coronavirus pandemic, may heighten your child’s anxious feelings about their return to school. Please refer to pages 6 - 7 for strategies to support your child in their return to school.
Teachers have nominated one student from each class to receive a remote learning award, which recognises engagement, participation and commitment to remote learning over the past 9 weeks. Congratulations to the following students who received three or more awards, a full list of recipients can be found on pages 3 - 5.

Remote Learning Awards
It has been fantastic to see the full return of students in Years 7-10 this week.
Many students have shone in their individual efforts during the remote learning process.
Years 7-10 teachers have nominated one student from each class who displayed an active and highly self -motivated approach to their online work.
These awards were not based on any marks, rather they reflect effort and attitude.
We congratulate these students who have all ASPIREd to improve within very challenging circumstances!

National Reconciliation Week 2020 Theme
In 2020 Reconciliation Australia marks twenty years of shaping Australia’s journey towards a more just, equitable and reconciled nation.
Much has happened since the early days of the people’s movement for reconciliation, including greater acknowledgement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander rights to land and sea; understanding of the impact of government policies and frontier conflicts; and an embracing of stories of Indigenous success and contribution.
2020 also marks the twentieth anniversary of the reconciliation walks of 2000, when people came together to walk on bridges and roads across the nation and show their support for a more reconciled Australia.
As always, we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us, and Australians now benefit from the efforts and contributions of people committed to reconciliation in the past.
Today we work together to further that national journey towards a fully reconciled country.
Reconciliation is a journey for all Australians – as individuals, families, communities, organisations and importantly as a nation. At the heart of this journey are relationships between the broader Australian community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We strive towards a more just, equitable nation by championing unity and mutual respect as we come together and connect with one another.
On this journey, Australians are all In This Together; every one of us has a role to play when it comes to reconciliation, and in playing our part we collectively build relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories and cultures. (sourced from https://www.reconciliation.org.au/national-reconciliation-week/
Over the week at Aquinas we are obviously limited by what we can do as an entire community but classes will be encouraged to spend time reflecting on the importance of the week, finding out what they can do and directing class prayer to the success of genuine and lasting reconciliation.
