GROWER NOTESThe following information is based on our own experience with this crop in the Pacific Northwest. Growth will vary depending on location, climate, growing medium and cultural practices. As always, where chemical use is involved, read the labels, follow the instructions and practice careful trialing methods.
• Avoid planting when temperatures are above 80º F. Planting early in the season, in cooler temperatures, provides the best conditions for critical root development.
• Helleborus niger prefers soil high in organic matter with good air space and drainage. Avoid soils with a high nitrogen starter charge. • Because of the longer crop time, be sure to factor the longevity of the lime in your regular mix to avoid pH drops and possible
nutrient problems late in production.• A preventative treatment for root or crown rot is recommended after transplant, either through chemical drenching or the addition
of RootShield® (Trichoderma harzianum) or other microbial soil additives. If using microbial products, be aware of the effect of fungicides on these products.
• Monitor root development and fertility levels to avoid excess salts and prevent root rot. Fertilize based on the following seasonal guidelines: • During cool spring months, apply balanced fertilizer higher in nitrogen content. • During summer heat, significantly decrease or discontinue fertilizer use; Hellebore roots are sensitive to fertilizer burn. • During fall months, apply balanced fertilizer higher in potassium. If slow-release is incorporated into the soil mix, use low label rates and choose a feed that will release at lower spring temperatures, when plants are in most active growth. If necessary, supplementing with liquid feed will give better control over EC in summer heat when plants are more sensitive to salts buildup.Screen the pH and EC of the potting medium routinely to maintain the recommended levels: • EC: 1.0–1.8 mS/cm during the growing season; when forcing plants: 1.0 mS/cm • pH: 5.5–6.0
• It is important that the pots you use, whether black or colored, not allow light to pass through the plastic, as Helleborus roots are sensitive to heat and light and roots will not develop properly in the container if exposed to light.
• To test, hold a flashlight up to the plastic; no light should be visible on the other side. • Keep plants evenly moist, but not overly wet. Do not allow to wilt repeatedly.• Monitor for thrips, aphids, Botrytis and leaf spots during the growing season and treat accordingly. Check crowns and developing
flower buds carefully for thrips, as they will damage blossoms by eating stamens at the bud stage, and damage may go unnoticed until bloom. Protect from freezing temperatures according to your geographic area (see map, previous page): • Regions A and C: Can be grown outdoors until freezing weather; do not allow to freeze. Prior to freezing weather, move plants to a greenhouse where night temperatures of 36–40º F can be maintained. • Region B: Can be grown outdoors with winter protection; do not allow to freeze. Protect foliage from severe weather to avoid winter burn.

PLANTING DATESSelect potting date based on desired grade; summer planting is not recommended in any region: • Premium: suggested potting dates for top quality flowering plants, with high bloom count • Landscape: later potting will produce smaller plants, with modest bloomNote that using the planting date listed will produce a full, beautiful, gallon plant. Planting even earlier will improve the quality. Yellow areas shown in the south are not suitable for growing Hellebores.

PLANT DATAUse the notes below to supplement the following varietal chart.
• Height and Spread: Represents height of foliage/ height of flower; average spread in the garden. • USDA Zone and Bloom Time: The hardiness and bloom time reflect our experience with the variety as grown in the
Pacific Northwest.• Planting Depth
• Crown level with soil: Plant liners level with the soil, taking care not to bury the too deeply. • Deep: Cover the crown with ½" of soil at transplant so first watering leaves it only slightly exposed. If planted too high, the central bud stem may fall off center, and buds will form at the crown, but will not leaf out and produce full plants.
• Spacing: Avoid spacing plants during periods of high heat to lessen stress. Soil should not be visible when plants are properly positioned; use foliage to provide shade to roots. Soil temperature is the most critical factor in healthy root development. Plants will benefit from higher light levels if temperatures are below 80º F, so provide shade primarily to reduce soil temperature rather than light levels. • Yes, early: These are the most vigorous varieties and typically become crowded fairly quickly, needing spacing to prevent petiole stretch and to allow for more even application of regulators. Space early, but avoid overspacing to prevent stretched plants. Two-step spacing may be beneficial.
• Yes, when crowded: These varieties will also need spacing when the canopy becomes crowded, but are not as apt to overgrow as the more vigorous cultivars.• Only when necessary: These are the most heat sensitive varieties and will benefit from being unspaced for as long as possible to allow the canopy to shade the roots. They often need spacing at some point if they become crowded and begin\ to stretch, or to improve air circulation and lessen foliar disease, but should not be prematurely spaced.
• Growth Regulator Needs: Use growth regulators judiciously to prevent petiole stretch. Frequency and rates may need adjustment discontinue growth regulators after early August, or bud development may be affected.
• Low: These naturally compact varieties need regulators primarily to prevent petiole stretch. Start with lower rates 2500 3750 ppm of daminozide (B-Nine® or Dazide®) and add 5 ppm Bonzi® (paclobutrazol) for additional control if needed. It is better to spray lower rates more often than to overregulate these varieties.• Medium: Use slightly higher rates: 3750–5000 ppm daminozide ( B-Nine® or Dazide®) and 5–10 ppm paclobutrazol (Bonzi® or Paczol®).• High: On these vigorous cultivars, proper timing of regulators is essential to the production of quality plants that do not become overgrown. Growth regulators need to be applied early and more often. To control petiole stretch in young plants apply 3750 ppm daminozide (B-Nine® or Dazide®) and 5 ppm paclobutrazol (Bonzi® or Paczol®) to keep growth compact. When foliage is just over the edge of the pot, a 1 ppm paclobutrazol (Bonzi®) drench is recommended. Repeat drenches every 3–4 weeks as needed in summer, especially on Pink Frost. • Discontinue drenching in late August or early September to allow crown buds to produce foliage, and return to foliar sprays of B-Nine® only if needed.
