2018 Mid-Year Population Estimates: Age and gender profile
Related information
This bulletin presents the 2018 Mid-Year
Population Estimates (Census based) by 5-
year age group and gender for Kent County
and Kent local authority districts. This data
was released by the Office for National
Statistics (ONS) on 26 June 2019.
Summary of findings
• The total population of Kent (excluding Medway) is
estimated to be 1,568,600 people.
• Of all the local authority districts in Kent, Maidstone has
the largest population with 170,000 people. Gravesham
has the smallest population with 106,400 people.
• There are slightly more female residents than male
residents in Kent. 50.9% (798,600 people) residents are
female and 49.1% (770,100) male. This pattern is seen
in all of Kent’s local authority districts.
• However, the male to female ratio changes with age.
Overall there tends to be more males than there are
females up to the age of 29 years. Beyond this age,
there are more females than males, although the exact
age at which there become more females than males
does vary between each local authority district.
• The mean age of the population in Kent is 41.1 years.
This is a year older than the national mean age which is
40.1 years. The mean age of a Kent female is 42 and a
Kent male is 40.1.

Summary of findings continued
• Kent has a slightly smaller proportion of 0-4 year olds than the national
average, but on the whole Kent has a younger age profile than the
national average, with a greater proportion of young people aged 5-19
years than England.
• Kent has a smaller proportion of middle-aged people compared to
England, particularly in the age group 20-44 years.
• Kent has an older age profile than the national average with greater
proportions of people aged 45+ years than England.
This bulletin begins by presenting the total population estimate, by gender, of
Kent County and Kent local authority districts. The bulletin then goes on to
present the population profile by 5-year age group and gender of each Kent
local authority area in the form of population pyramids and tables.
Further details from the 2018 estimates are available on the Kent County
Council website in the bulletins and excel toolkits listed below:
• ‘2018 Mid-Year Population Estimates: Total population of Kent authorities’ looks at Kent’s population in the context of national and regional change since 2012.
• ‘Time series of Mid-year population estimates 1998-2018’ presents total population between 1998 and 2018.
• ‘What’s causing Kent’s population growth?’ examines the reasons behind the changes in population.
• ‘Interactive population estimates Excel toolkit’ allows access to population estimates for any chosen age group for all 12 Kent local authority districts and Kent County as a whole, between 1992 and 2018.
Note on the data
It is ONS policy to present all estimates rounded to the nearest hundred.
Within this bulletin all numbers have been individually rounded and therefore
may not sum. Percentages have been calculated using unrounded numbers.
The data in this bulletin will be updated in summer 2020 when the 2019 Mid-
year population estimates will be released

Total population estimates by gender of Kent local authorities
According to the revised 2018 MYPE the population of Kent is 1,568,600. Of
the Kent local authority areas Maidstone has the largest population with
170,000 people. Gravesham has the smallest population with 106,400
