RUGGERO LEONCAVALLO
DeRenziHendrick Nisticò
Sung in Italian with English titles projected above the stage.
Among the most beloved operas in the standard repertoire for over 100 years, Pagliacci is also the perfect first opera for newcomers. This fall, Leoncavallo’s tragedy returns to the Sarasota Opera House by popular demand! Your heart will break as Canio—the clown—must go on with the comedy despite his real-life humiliation when his wife betrays him. Tenor Michael Robert Hendrick, who won critical acclaim for his recent performance as Erik in The Flying Dutchman, sings the title role featuring the iconic aria “Vesti la giubba.”
Following each performance, come mix and mingle with the artists at an after-party in the Opera House courtyard and lobby. A cash bar will be available.

Opening the Winter Opera Festival, two Sarasota favorites—soprano Kara Shay Thomson and tenor Rafael Dávila—will return to recreate the roles of Tosca and Cavaradossi in Puccini’s famous melodramma. The Italian master’s powerful melodies give life to this story where a famous diva’s jealousy leads to tragedy. Rafael Dávila will dazzle you with his “spectacular upper range and beautifully focused tone”* as he performs two pillars of the Italian tenor repertoire, “Recondita armonia” and “E lucevan le stelle.”

Sung in Italian with English titles projected above the stage.
On Valentine’s Day, Saturday, February 14, one of Mozart’s most charming creations will return to the Sarasota Opera stage—The Marriage of Figaro. Featuring some of the characters from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, but composed 30 years earlier, this comedy sees Figaro and his fiancée Susanna join with Rosina (now the Countess Almaviva) to thwart her husband’s lechery. This delightful comic opera will leave you on the edge of your seat as you follow the mayhem that ensues.

Sung in Russian with English titles projected above the stage.
Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov was famous for his ability to produce rich and exotic melodies as well as masterful orchestral textures, such as in his treasured orchestral masterpiece, Scheherazade. Already in his late years, but captivated by a poem by Pushkin, the Russian master was compelled to write The Golden Cockerel. The opera tells the story of the bumbling King Dodon who enlists the help of a magical golden cockerel to protect his country from attack. However, the poor King and his land fall prey to the seductive powers of his adversary, The Queen of Shemakha.

In this penultimate year of our acclaimed Verdi Cycle, Sarasota Opera will present the Paris version of Don Carlos—Verdi’s epic story of love, betrayal and tragedy. Carlos’ loyalty to his father, King Philip of Spain, is tested by his desperate love for Élisabeth, the King’s wife. Set in Renaissance Spain dominated by war and the Inquisition, this powerful drama is one of opera’s great masterpieces. Soprano Michelle Johnson—making her Sarasota Opera debut in this production—will be joined by beloved Sarasota Opera principals mezzo-soprano Mary Phillips, tenor Jonathan Burton, bass-baritone Kevin Short, baritone Marco Nisticò and bass Young Bok Kim.
