Constructing- Week 7 J
Week 7 Glossary:
ETFE: ETFE film is lightweight and can transmit up to 90% sunlight, which can reduce the electricity costs for
lighting, heating and cooling as its insulation characteristics are similar to glass. - Non-stick surface; - strength for
over 20 years, highly resistant to fire and heat; - recyclable,

Rockwool: mineral wool made by blowing a jet of steam through molten rock (as limestone or
siliceous rock) or through slag and used chiefly for heat and sound insulation
Merriam-Webster Dictionary, 2013, “rock wool”, viewed 15/09/2013, <http://www.merriam-

Sarking: Sarking is a liquid proof but vapour permeable flexible sheet material that is fixed directly
behind timber cladding or under roofing material. Its primary function in walls is to prevent any water
that may have penetrated the cladding from lodging within the framing. It also provides a draught
proof barrier to keep wind driven rain or dust out of the wall cavity.

<http://oak.arch.utas.edu.au/tbia/view_article.asp?articleID=203>
Skillion Roof: This is normally a single sloping roof surface, not attached to another roof surface. The term skillion can also be used
for a smaller addition to an existing roof, where keeping to the same slope (roof pitch) puts the skillion roof lower
than the ceiling height of the main structure.

Insulation wool- rock wool for
controlling heat and sound
- Install between studs
PVC Pipe- for
stormwater/ sewage
(drainage)
-cheaper; no
corrosion; less noisy
-but not ideal for
running hot water;
support bacteria
growth;
Copper pipe- usually
run hot/ cold water
-resist bacteria; small
outside diameter;
flexible around joints
-but it will corrode and
leak if acidic water runs
through; more
expensive
Concrete Block-

Yellow Steel Stud- does
not twist
Steel: very expensive-
AUD $8000/ton
Post-tensioned concrete:
-The longer spans cut
down on the number of
columns required
-lower cost
-Is cast around steel
tendon- post-tension
