INSIDE THE SMBA
THE PRESIDENT’S
MESSAGE
DICK BECKLEY
As the fall approaches and our 2013-14 Con-cert Season is soon to begin, I urge all our mem-bers to take advantage of the great bands we, again, have assembled for the upcoming sea-son. Bios on the first 4 bands to perform are elsewhere in this issue of the Hornpipe.
Our SMBA picnic on July 27th at Allenberry was huge success. The food was outstanding, as usual, and Baltimore Bluegrass Band put on a great performance for all attending. Also, there was some fine picking and singing by SMBA members before and between band performanc-es. As the band was performing their finale, a scorching rendition by Warren Blair of "Orange Blossom Special", the rain cascaded down upon us and the band area was literally flooded, bring-ing two great sets of music to a quick ending. I think that all attending will attest that this was one of the best picnics, ever. If you were not there you missed a great event.
I would like to thank Bill Aldinger for his chair-manship of our SMBA picnic for every year since its inception. We have the picnic because of Bill and his creative ability, thoughtfulness, organiza-tional skills and, most of all, his dedication to SMBA and its members over the past decade or so chairing the picnic. It was his idea to have an organized picnic and he also was instrumental in creating our annual Raffle which is in conjunc-tion with the picnic and which has made our pic-nic mostly self-supporting, while keeping it af-fordable for all our members. It is one of the best bargains anywhere. Bill has asked that he be relieved of his Chairmanship so he and Jan can pursue other activities, since they have a desire
to travel more since their marriage last year. He will be a tough act to follow, but I am hope-ful that others will step forward and we will continue to have the great time each summer that he has organized for us this year and in the past.
Bill also had asked me that he not be reap-pointed this year to his accustomed spot on our Board of Trustees and I appointed Ruth Ann Berney as his replacement on the board. Again, Bill will be sorely missed. He has, at one time or the other, held just about every office or position in our Association and it will not seem the same not having him in on the planning of all our activities. Bill has, however, told me that he'd still be around and I hope that he will lend some insight and expertise to the new chairman, George Fishel, and his committee when the decision making begins on next year's picnic.
All this leads me to point out the fact that the projects, shows, The Hornpipe, Jams, etc. do not just happen here at SMBA. It involves planning, sometimes even hard work, and a lot of time, to make our organization what it is for our over 400 members. Chairpersons, Board Members, and Officers tend to turn over faster than we realize, and new blood is sorely need-ed to carry on, if SMBA is to survive and grow.
Please consider getting involved if you are not already involved in SMBA activities. You get out of an organization about what you put into it. I can attest that it has been a very rewarding journey for me working on the Music Commit-tee and being a board member and officer, and it will be for you also, if you just step for-ward and volunteer to serve.

6/13/13 To: Mike Foster, Newsletter Editor, SMBA Re: Response to Dick Beckley’s Editorial in “The Hornpipe” As a fairly recent bluegrass convert and in response to Dick Beckley’s editorial in the last “Hornpipe,” I must say that I agree with him 100%. I was a country music fan for years, beginning in the 60’s. And like him, I too have been turned off by country music’s recent evolution into country rock. It seemed more and more that if a band had several loud electric guitars and drums and the vocalist sang with a “twang,” then it was considered to be legitimate country. I couldn’t stand to listen to it any longer. Then I bought a banjo a year and a half ago and started taking lessons. At that time, the only bluegrass songs I could name were “Foggy Mountain Breakdown,” “Rocky Top,” and “Wabash Cannonball”! When I started listening in earnest to traditional bluegrass artists and songs, I discovered music that appealed to me much more than the country music I was currently hearing. Yes, in bluegrass there are the same “love lost songs” and “he/she done me wrong songs” that are a part of country music’s repertoire. But traditional bluegrass music spoke to my heart in the same way as the old country songs of the 50’s and 60’s. And when I started going to jams and hearing more bluegrass songs, I knew I had found a home and a music passion. You must also consider the talent involved in performing a traditional bluegrass song versus a country song. I believe most people could strum some chords on a loud electric guitar or pick notes on an electric bass guitar or bang on a set of drums or sing the lyrics with a backwoods twang – and make what comes out sound fairly close to a current country song. But try that with a bluegrass song – it doesn’t quite work, does it? What struck me most when I started going to jams was the absolutely incredible talent I heard. While I have a long way to go and am gradually learning to fit my style of beginner banjo picking into jams, I am very much humbled by the talent of the other pickers. And I agree, if I attend a bluegrass concert and leave with my ears hurting as Mr. Beckley stated, then it was not a tra-ditional bluegrass concert! However, I believe that to continue, traditional bluegrass has to embrace new songs written by current traditional bluegrass artists. Joe Mullins and The Radio Ramblers’ mandolin player Mike Terry has written many beautiful songs that rival some of the traditional bluegrass favorites while keeping to the old bluegrass/mountain music style we all love. Even some rock songs can be “converted” to bluegrass and played acoustically without the harsh sounds of electric guitars and drums. Have you heard Bill Emerson & Sweet Dixie perform the Beatles’ “Yesterday”? Incredible! We need to insist that traditional bluegrass stay traditional – but we also have to evolve a little and include some of the newly written traditional-style songs and “converted” rock songs. Consider adding a few to your play list! -- Cindy Criswell, Gardners, PA

BAND BIOS
October 12, American Drive Our opening show of the 2013-14 season will be on Oct 12 and will feature Amer-ican Drive, an outstanding band. American Drive is a new band in name only, the guys having all been mem-bers of the New South before JD Crowe retired last year, except for the banjo player who took JD's place in the band. Not many bands can boast of 3 top vocalists, but American Drive has exactly that. Ricky Wasson fronts the band on guitar, Dwight McCall is on man-dolin, and Matt Despain is on dobro. These 3 can all render an excellent lead vocal as you will quickly see when you see these guys perform. Rounding out the band is Kyle Perkins on bass, and Josh Hymer on banjo. Past attendees may remember Josh playing a hot banjo on our stage a few years ago with David Parmley. They have a new CD out and it has been at or near the top of the charts. They maintain the sound of the New South while also blending in their own style of tradition-al bluegrass. Traditional lovers should not miss this concert, which will be one of the best on the 2013-14 calendar.
November 9, The Spinney Brothers
Our first November band is a hard driving traditional band from north of the border in Nova Scotia. We have been working for 2 years to get the Spinney Brothers here on our stage. They have a hard driving tradi-tional sound that would seem to be straight from the hills of Kentucky or Virginia and have been around the very top of the charts over the last several years. Brothers Rick and Allen on banjo and guitar respectively, have a family harmony that is tough to dupli-cate. They are often compared to the Gibson Brothers in their harmony renditions but to me, lean a bit more to the traditional side of bluegrass. The last few years, they have tak-en IBMA by storm and everyone there agrees that they are the best ever to come out of Canada. Rounding out the band is longtime mem-ber Gary Dalrymple on mandolin and Darryl Hebb on bass. Their stage presence is reminiscent of the bands of the 50's and 60's, both in sound and also the well dressed, professional image that they present. They have come a long way to entertain us. This is a can't miss show. Let's fill the fire house for this fine band!

BAND BIOS
November 30, Danny Paisley and Southern Grass We listened to you, our audience and have add-ed two extra shows to our 2013-14 lineup this season. The first is the Saturday of Thanksgiv-ing weekend with Danny Paisley and his fine group. Everyone who follows real traditional bluegrass seriously, knows Danny and what he brings to the stage. His vocals are instantly rec-ognizable and his style is his own. Danny is on guitar and accompanying him is son Ryan Pais-ley on mandolin, York County native Dougie Meek on fiddle, Eric Troutman on bass, and Mark Delaney on banjo. Mark has graced our stage in the past with Legends of the Potomac, Country Gentlemen Tribute Band and Good Deale Bluegrass Band. Our attendance at these 2 new shows will determine whether or not we keep the extra dates on our future concert calendars. If you want more shows, please make an effort to sup-port these "extra" shows on our schedule.
December 14, Boxcars
Our December Band should need no introduction as this is the 3rd straight year they have been our December Band. One of the all-time favorites to perform here, they always draw a large crowd and their performances are always memorable. These fine musicians and vocalists always present a full concert of their hit recordings, a mixture of tradi-tional and contemporary bluegrass. A multi-award winning group both separately and together, in-strumentally and vocally, they are: Adam Steffey on mandolin and vocals, Ron Stewart on banjo and vocals, Keith Garrett on guitar and vocals, John Bowman on fiddle and vocals, and Harold Nixon on bass. They also will be trading instru-ments around throughout their performance as all are multi-instrumentalists. Let's turn out in record numbers for this performance to welcome this fine group back again to our stage.
*** You have asked for and we have listened. For the many that have commented that they want more traditional bluegrass on our concert schedule, the above bands fit perfectly into this category. Your attendance in large numbers will insure that we stay the course having pure traditional music more often in the future.
