BROADWAY STREETCAR EXTENSION
COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS SURVEY SUMMARY
Broadway Streetcar Extension Community Priorities Survey
Overview
The City of Seattle is building a modern streetcar network that will provide new urban
mobility options, support economic growth and strengthen connections among the places
where people live, work and socialize.
The First Hill Streetcar Line will be an important link in the regional transit system,
connecting diverse and vibrant residential neighborhoods and business districts, while also
serving major medical centers, higher learning institutions and major sporting event
venues.
The City of Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) has secured funding to review
and design an extension of the First Hill Streetcar Line into the Broadway Business District.
As part of SDOTs effort to involve and engage the public in the design of the Broadway
Streetcar Extension, between December 13, 2012, and February 25, 2013, the project
posted and promoted a community survey. Interviewers also conducted a door-to-door
survey of businesses along Broadway. The objective of the survey was to learn more about:
What features of Broadway are most important to preserve and/or enhance
Where the northern streetcar terminus should be located Which of the proposed streetcar alignments are preferred How people intend to use the First Hill Streetcar and the Broadway Streetcar
Extension once they are operational
This document summarizes the survey results. Because of many factors, survey results,
while generally informative, should not be viewed as statistically valid.
The feedback the project team received while conducting the community survey will helpguide the planning and design process for the Broadway Streetcar Extension.

COMMUNITY AND BUSINESS SURVEY SUMMARY
Methodology
The community survey contained six questions, some of which allowed respondents tosupply multiple answers.
To reach a broad audience, the community survey was posted on the Seattle Streetcar
website, available at the project open house, promoted on the Seattle Streetcars Facebook
page and sent out over the Seattle Streetcars listserv (1,500+ emails). The project also
reached out to community organizations requesting they distribute the survey to their
members.
Broadway Business Outreach: To ensure that Broadway businesses along the extension
area were included and able to provide feedback, the project team went door-to-door toconduct face-to-face interviews.
For ease of tabulation, answers were written on a printed survey used by interviewers. On
average a survey took approximately 5 - 8 minutes to administer. Survey questions for
businesses, refined following feedback from the community, focused on the alignment
options and Broadway street prioritization.
The project team conducted door-to-door outreach on five different occasions in late
January 2013. In order to connect with someone the interviewers visited a business more
than once. Interviewers visited 90 businesses and were able to connect personally with
about 80 of these businesses. Forty-two businesses chose to participate in the survey.

Summary of Survey Results
The majority of respondents use transit in the Capitol Hill area on a daily-to-weeklybasis. Over 38% of respondents noted that they use transit every day.
Majority of respondents live or work near First Hill or Broadway StreetcarExtension line. Over 46% of respondents reported that they worked or lived in the
Capitol Hill area.
Strong support for extending the streetcar to Prospect Street. 64% of respondentspreferred Prospect Street as the terminus option.
Alignment Option #1 (maintaining parking along Broadway) and Alignment Option#2 (maintaining left hand turns along Broadway) received almost identical support
in the community survey. Businesses interviewed during door-to-door
overwhelmingly supported Option #1 (89%) because it preserved more parking and
passenger/commercial loading areas.
Community survey respondents noted that bicycle safety, traffic flow and pedestriansafety were the most important features to preserve or enhance along the Broadway
corridor. When mentioned, an extension of the bikeway was generally well
received. Broadway businesses wanted to preserve parking and commercial
loading. There was significant support for preserving as much parking on Broadway
as possible.
The Chinatown/International District, the future Link Light Rail station onBroadway, and Pioneer Square were all highly ranked by community survey
respondents as places to which theyd travel on the First Hill Streetcar. Retail/dining
establishments along the future streetcar line were the single most frequently cited
destination (83%).
