2012 Corolla vs. 2012 Nissan Sentra
Top Corolla Advantages Over Sentra
Sentra has been a stalwart in the compact-sedan market, although it has never reached the same popularity as Corolla. In an attempt to increase its appeal, Nissan offers Sentra in a dizzying array of six models, two engines and numerous packages. Seemingly, there is a Sentra for everyone, including the large-engine SE-R models. And yet Sentra still can’t match the success of Corolla. Its styling is modern, its choices are numerous, and its reputation is good, but something is missing—Toyota QDR and a product that consumers want.
Rather than offering a confusing array of models and features, Toyota builds Corolla the way most people want their compact sedan: efficient, well equipped, well assembled, and surprisingly refined. And that’s why more people choose Corolla than any other compact sedan.
This Edge points out some of the obvious advantages that Corolla has when compared with Sentra, but for many consumers it’s the invisible benefits of reputation, refinement, resale and value that win.
A COmpelling VAlue STOry From its purchase price to its ownership cost to its two-year worry-free factory- maintenance program, Corolla has Sentra beat hands down.
• eye-opening price advantage. Look at the MSRP1 of Corolla vs. Sentra and discover a $1,000 value story.
• lower predicted ownership cost. Intellichoice2 predicts that Sentra will cost more than $750 more during five years of ownership.
•maintenance program. It’s a simple pitch: Corolla has one, and Sentra doesn’t. ToyotaCare3 is a real win for owners.
prOVen TeChnOlOgy One of Corolla’s great strengths is reputation, and that’s why Toyota sticks with traditional technology for this sedan.
• proven transmission. Corolla uses a four-speed automatic with a proven track record. Sentra uses an Xtronic® continuously variable transmission.
AudiO And TelemATiCS AdVAnTAgeS Corolla LE has the features you expect in a more expensive car. On Sentra they cost extra—or aren’t offered at all.
• Bluetooth® technology. Wireless music streaming, hands-free calling, and phone-book access are standard on Corolla LE. But these features cost extra on Sentra.
•uSB connector. Another great standard feature for Corolla LE that requires an extra-cost option package on the Sentra 2.0 S.
•display Audio with navigation. For the full suit of connectivity features, this Corolla LE option gives the Toyota an inventory of features that Sentra 2.0 S doesn’t offer—at any cost.
A hidden perfOrmAnCe STOry Horsepower can be convincing, but there is often a hidden story in well-engineered vehicles like Corolla.
• lower curb weight. Sentra has more horsepower, but it’s also lugging almost 200 pounds of additional weight— like a pair of teenagers that never leave the back seat.
•dual VVT-i system. Variable valve timing helps the engine respond quickly—plus it helps reduce emissions and improve real-world fuel economy. Corolla has it; Sentra doesn’t.
COmfOrT And COnVenienCe AdVAnTAgeS Sentra 2.0 S lacks a telescoping steering wheel and heated mirrors; a moonroof isn’t available; and the back seat just isn’t as big.
•more adjustments. It should be easier to tailor the Corolla to the driver because the steering wheel tilts and telescopes.
•more sunshine. A Corolla LE buyer can choose a power glass moonroof. On Sentra the buyer has to choose a more expensive model and option packages to get a moonroof.
•more leg room. Although Corolla is no bigger than Sentra on the outside, it has nearly two-inches of additional rear leg room.

The Sentra is offered is a wide array of models, from the basic Sentra 2.0, all the way up to the high-performance Sentra SE-R, which adds a bigger and much more powerful 2.5-liter engine. The Sentra 2.0, 2.0 S, 2.0 SR and 2.0 SL are the closest Corolla competitors, and the model range is among the biggest in the compact-sedan market. But most customers choose the affordable Sentra 2.0 or 2.0 S models. SR, SL and especially SE-R models are expensive and hard to find.

Corolla uses a traditional four-speed automatic with a proven track record. Variable valve timing helps the engine breath better—which helps reduce emissions and improve real-world fuel economy. Toyota goes further by allowing the intake valves to move independently from the exhaust valves, so the engine can “inhale” and “exhale” more precisely. Sentra can’t do this because it doesn’t have dual VVT-i.
