Dear Friends, Welcome to the 2011 Vail International Dance Festival! This year we begin with a happy and historic occasion as we proudly present the worldwide launch of New York City Ballet MOVES, the much-anticipated new touring company of dancers and musicians from the magnificent New York City Ballet. Immediately following, we welcome another NYC dance powerhouse, the Mark Morris Dance Group, heralded for their brilliant modern dance and for the genius of their founding choreographer, Mark Morris. And in the final leg of what could be called a NYC troika, we welcome back to Vail choreographer extraordinaire Christopher Wheeldon, in residence to create a new ballet for our Premieres performance. Other highlights this year include the return of the engaging Trey McIntyre Project; a new evening of Ballroom dance featuring international stars; a performance celebrating the popularity of dance on television; International Evenings showcasing a selection of the world’s most thrilling dancers; and appearances by “Lil Buck,” the Festival’s 2011 Artist-In-Residence. As always, we present the free Village Vignettes and Hot Summer Nights of Dance, along with three interactive Dancing in the Streets events, bringing dance into the community for all to take part in! Our dance education program, Celebrate the Beat, which has expanded to include year-round arts education in the Eagle County public schools, will again hold a free summer session for local children, culminating in a performance during the Festival. We thank you for your support and hope you will enjoy the 2011 Vail International Dance Festival, which once again affirms our commitment to making Vail a place where dance and all the arts uniquely flourish.

Trey McIntyre Project, a contemporary ballet company whose goal is to “convey the emotion and grace of life’s journey” through dance, makes its return to the Vail stages after its debut at the 2005 Vail International Dance Festival. McIntyre trades pointe shoes and classical music for bright ensembles and popular music by artists such as Roy Orbison. His appealingly athletic ballet vocabulary and individual voice has made him one of the most popular dance-makers in the United States today.

Jill Plancher Jill has been attending the New York City Ballet since she was a little girl with dreams of becoming a ballerina. Though now an attorney with Connecticut Legal Services, her passion for ballet has continued. A NYCB subscriber for many years, Jill is thrilled with the new choreography and illuminating UpClose Performance Series introduced by Damian Woetzel in 2007. She is pleased to return to the Underwriters’ Circle this year where her generous gift will underwrite the August 1 performance of the New York City Ballet MOVES.
Linda & Stephen Waterhouse Linda and Steve think of dance as a universal language, an art form with no boundaries, to be enjoyed by everyone. They are pleased to help the Vail Valley Foundation, and particularly Damian Woetzel, present the finest dancers/athletes in the world at the Vail International Dance Festival. This year, they will generously co-underwrite the new work by Christopher Wheeldon to be premiered August 8 at the Vilar Performing Arts Center.
Betsy & George Wiegers Long-time supporters of the arts in New York City and Denver, the Wiegers are also extraordinarily generous in the Vail Valley and contribute to many charities in our mountain community. The Vail International Dance Festival, as well as the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, have both benefited greatly from George and Betsy’s philanthropy, and Betsy serves on the VVF Board of Directors. They are pleased to underwrite International Evenings l on August 5.
