COMETS LOOK TO BOUNCE BACK FROMDISAPPOINTING 2010 SEASON

The Olivet College softball team finished the 2010 seasonwith a 14-18 overall record, including a 6-10 mark againstMichigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) opponents.In 2011, the Comets hope to bounce back and finish with awinning record.
PITCHERSSenior Katie Harper (Vassar) returns for her final season
in the red and white. She has started 52 games in her firstthree seasons at Olivet and has posted a 31-21 record to goalong with a 2.93 ERA. Harper has struck out 238 batters andwalked only 99 in 347 innings.
Juniors Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) and KelseyGreene (Burr Oak) add depth in the circle. During her freshmancampaign, Cook had an 11-7 record. Greene, who transferredto Olivet prior to last season from Eastern Michigan University,started 12 games and finished the year with a 5-8 record.
Sophomore Breanne Harmon (Quincy) had a solid rookieseason. In 30 innings pitched, she struck out 32 batters andwalked only 11.
CATCHERSSenior Christine Daub (Hudson) started every game last
year behind the plate in her first season at Olivet. She wasranked four on the team with a .323 batting average and madejust one error in 173 total chances for a single-season schoolrecord .994 fielding percentage.
Freshmen Courtney Klinger (Jackson/Northwest) andLauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic) are also goingto have chances behind the plate in games.
OUTFIELDERSSenior Jenny Robbins (Fenton) returns for her final
season in the red and white and is likely to get the starting jobin centerfield for a second straight year. In her career, she hasplayed in 83 games and is hitting .264, while scoring 42 runsand stealing 37-of-40 bases.
Junior Nicole Wernette (Remus/Chippewa Valley) alongwith sophomores Breanna Bunker (Charlotte) and Ciara
Santos (Lansing/Everett) all contributed in the outfield lastseason and are going to get opportunities this spring.
Batting from the left side of the plate as a slap hitter lastyear, Wernette was third on the team with a .333 battingaverage. In their first season at Olivet, Bunker and Santosplayed in 25 and 20 games, respectively. Santos batted .311and drove in nine runs.
Also looking to contribute in 2011 will be freshmen TerriHurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) and Alyssa Nielsen(Greenville).
INFIELDERSWhen she’s not in the circle, Greene will start at a corner
infield position. For her efforts, she was a 2010 second-teamAll-MIAA selection. Senior Kate Boss (Charlotte/Maple Valley)and sophomore Lindsey Maas (Pinckney) are two otherreturning infielders. Last year, Boss started five games atsecond base, while Maas started two at first base and sevengames each at shortstop and third base.
Junior Bridget Lathers (Grass Lake/Lumen Christi) is ableto play this season after sitting out last year. She came to Olivetafter playing two seasons at Jackson Community College.Junior Brooke Coshow (Niles/Brandywine) spent her first twocollegiate seasons of softball at Lake Michigan College. Lenardis a versatile player who also has strong potential to be thestarting first baseman.
Sophomores Ali Lund (Owosso) and Ashley Mallo(Constantine) saw the majority of their playing time on the juniorvarsity team last spring. These two, along with freshman SarahMecham (Eaton Rapids), are going to battle for playing timethis year.
SCHEDULEFor the seventh straight year, Olivet will start its season
by playing 12 games at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers,Fla. Over the last six years, the Comets have compiled a 44-20 record in Florida.
Olivet will then play four non-conference doubleheadersbefore hosting Hope College April 7 for its first MIAAdoubleheader.
James Farnum begins his eighth season asOlivet's head softball coach. In addition to hiscoaching responsibilities, Farnum is an assistantprofessor in the col lege's Health, PhysicalEducation, Recreation and Sport Department.
Under Farnum's leadership, the Comets havecompiled a 137-103 overall record, including aschool-record 24 wins in 2006. In addition, he
became Olivet’s winningest softball coach in 2007.Prior to being promoted to head coach, Farnum was an assistant
coach for the Comets for two seasons. He also has coaching experienceas an assistant softball and football coach at Alma College. Farnum is a1993 graduate of Alma, where he was a four-year letterwinner on thefootball team.
Farnum resides in Lansing with wife, Tammy, two daughters, Adalinand Kate, and son, Jackson.
Kelly Taber and Joe Ward are in their first seasonas assistant softball coaches at Olivet.
Taber is a volunteer assistant coach, working withthe infielders.
A native of Brown City, Taber earned a bachelor ’sdegree from Hope College in 2004. She was a four-year letterwinner on the softball team for the FlyingDutch. The starting shortstop all four years and captainduring her senior season, Taber was a three-time All-Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) selection, including afirst-team choice in 2003 and 2004. She also earned National FastpitchCoaches Association (NFCA) All-Region honors in 2003 and 2004. Taber wasa four-time NFCA Scholar All-American.
Taber led the team in most offensive and defensive categories, whilecurrently holding Top 10 single-season and career records. Notably in thecareer records, she is third in home runs (17) and walks (58) and fourth inhighest slugging percentage (.559).
Taber’s prior coaching experience was serving as an assistant softballcoach and strength coach at Allegheny (Pa.) College for the 2005-06 season.
Taber lives in Battle Creek with husband, Jake, who is Olivet’s headswimming and diving coach. She works as a sales account manager at StrykerMedical.

Ward is coaching the pitchers and catchers. Hehas an extensive background in business, educationand athletics.
Prior to joining the Olivet staff, he coached highschool softball for 13 years. While at Mott High Schoolin Warren, his teams won three consecutive WarrenConference titles. He also spent 10 years at JacksonHigh School, including leading the Vikings to a schoolrecord 19 wins in 2005. Addi t iona l ly, Ward has
coached amateur baseball and softball for more than 25 years.A Vietnam veteran, Ward served the U.S.A. in 1969 as an English
Language Instructor for the Air Force in Saigon. Upon returning from thewar, he earned a bachelor ’s degree from Wayne State University in 1974.Ward has also done extensive graduate work at Eastern Michigan University,University of Michigan and Spring Arbor University.
Ward was in the business field for more than 21 years and taught at thehigh school level for 16 years. He is currently an admissions representativefor the U.S. Military Academy at West Point (N.Y.) and a member of theJackson Promise Zone Authority.
Ward resides in Jackson with wife, Nancy. They have two grown sons,Brian and Brett.
Ryan Tundevold will serve as the actinghead coach for the Olivet College softball teamduring the 2011 season. He is serving the actingrole, while James Farnum is on a personal leaveof absense from the team.
Tundevold comes to Olivet after serving ashead varsity softball coach at Union City HighSchool. He also served as an assistant coach
at Union City for two seasons.Tundevold has more than 15 years of playing experience in a
men’s fastpitch league. From 2003-05, he helped his team, MarshallLighting, win the Amateur Softball Association of America (ASA) statetitle and berth in the ASA national tournament in 2003 and 2005,finishing as high as third in 2005. Tundevold earned Michigan ASAClass B Most Valuable Outfielder honors in 2004 and ASA Class BAll-American honors in 2005.
Tundevold earned a bachelor ’s degree from Western MichiganUniversity (WMU) in 2009 and is earning his master ’s degree fromWMU. He lives in Sherwood with wife, Christy, and their two children,Andrew and Lauren.
