ow in its fourth year, the CE Hall of Fame honors themovers and shakers that have made the consumer electron-ics industry what it is today. Determination, resolve, cre-

ativity and vision are among the attributes that the inductees to theCE Hall of Fame possess. The program serves as a bridge from thepast to the present, enabling younger generations to build on thefoundation laid by their colleagues before them. The CE Hall of Famepays tribute to those who individually, and in some cases together,made significant contributions to the development of consumer electronics products.

To recognize the accomplishments of the leaders of the consumerelectronics industry, the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)announced the first 50 inductees into its CE Hall of Fame at the2000 International CES in Las Vegas, seven more at the 2001 CESand another ten at the 2002 CES. This year, CEA proudly announcesan additional nine select leaders will join the existing 67 members.

The 2003 class will stand on the shoulders of such industry giants asEdwin Armstrong, Bill Boss, Paul Galvin, Ray Gates, Dr. SidneyHarman, Henry Kloss and David Sarnoff. The CE Hall of Fame showcases the resolve and progressive thinking of those whose ideashave directly affected consumer electronics technology and areresponsible for enhancing consumers’ lifestyles. Future leaders willundoubtedly build on these ideas and produce an even greater proliferation of consumer electronics products.

During the past century, the consumer electronics industry hasevolved from isolated hobbyist creations to a wide range of digitaltechnologies that has spurred numerous innovative devices. CEA represents more than 1,000 corporate members involved in thedesign, development, manufacturing, distribution and integration ofaudio, video, mobile electronics, wireless and landline communica-tions, information technology, home networking, multimedia andaccessory products.

Although the U.S. economy is facing challenges, the consumer technology industry is a bright spot with sales expected to brush $100billion for 2003 – a 3.5 percent rise over 2002. It is amazing what aprofound impact an idea can have once it is unleashed on the world.Just think of the Internet and how our world has forever changed.With this in mind, we can only guess at the extraordinary innovationthat will occur as the leaders of the CE Hall of Fame of tomorrow arebusy creating technologies and products in labs and companies today.

To choose the 2003 class, CEA asked a panel of 17 media and industry professionals to perform the difficult task of judging thenominations that were submitted by manufacturers, retailers andindustry journalists. The judging took place on September 10, 2002in New York. The judges used the democratic process of the majorityvotes to determine the nine honorees. For a complete list of thejudges, see page xx.

egarded as a founder of the electronics accessory industry,Herbert Borchardt created the systems that enabled dealers toexpand their business offerings and profits with accessory

products. Some of his first accessory products included 78-rpm phono-graph replacement needles, record covers, cleaning materials and otherphono accessories. At Recoton, he helped develop new innovative elec-tronic accessories for 45 rpm records, eight track cartridges, audio videodevices, telephones, antennas, audio cassettes, CB radios, television, cellphones, DVDs and videogames. He also planned accessories for emergingtechnologies such as digital HDTV. Borchardt was born in Germany andbegan his career there, working at Brunswick Records. He later foundedPolydor Records in Paris in 1929, and then Bost Records when he arrivedin New York in 1941. After this, Borchardt began his involvement withRecoton.

nown as an industry consultant, lecturer and technicalwriter, Leonard Feldman contributed to the consumer elec-tronics industry in a variety of ways. As the senior editor of

Audio magazine, Feldman wrote reviews that made insightful comparisonsof competing consumer electronics equipment through Feldman Labs. Healso was a columnist for EQ magazine and covered various audio andelectronic issues in other industry publications such as PopularElectronic, Popular Science, Consumer Electronics Magazine andTWICE, as well as several newspapers. Feldman authored seven bookscovering industry topics. Feldman was involved in the Audio EngineeringSociety (AES) as the vice president of the eastern region.

or more than 25 years, Kees Schouhammer Immink playeda central role in research and development of mass datastorage products. He was affiliated with Philips Research

Labs, Eindoven, Netherlands from 1967 to 1998. His research resulted in50 U.S.-issued patents, five of those basic patents have played a key rolein the optical recorder industry since 1985 and will continue until at least2015. Currently, Immink is an adjunct professor at the Institute forExperimental Mathematics in Essen, Germany, and a visiting professor atthe University of Singapore. Immink joined the Philips’ research group in1971 and participated in the world’s first experiments with opticalvideodisc recording. In 1979, as a technical leader, Immink participatedin the negotiations between Sony and Philips for the worldwide-acceptedstandard for the compact disc (CD). Immink’s coding system, namedEFM, now is used in most systems for digital video, audio and datarecording. More recently, Immink designed the channel coding tech-niques for the digital versatile disc (DVD) as well as the videodiscrecorder (VDR), which intends to bring an alternative to the camcorder.

ill Kasuga co-founded Kenwood Electronics Inc. in 1961 as adistribution company for Trio Corp., a Japanese consumerelectronics manufacturer, and gradually built Kenwood into a

name synonymous with quality stereo systems. The company name waschanged to Kenwood U.S.A. Corp. in 1975. In 1993 Kasuga was namedchairman of the board for the company, which then had sales of morethan $500 million and more than 300 employees. Kasuga stepped downas chairman in 1995, but continued with Kenwood as a member of theexecutive committee and the 401k Trustees Board. Today he serves as anadvisor to Kenwood’s president. Kasuga graduated from the University ofSan Francisco, served in the U.S. Army for 16 years and worked for A&ATrading Corp., an importing affiliate of RadioShack, before foundingKenwood. He is also a CEA Lifetime Achievement Award winner.

resident and founder of the Atwater Kent Radio Co., AtwaterKent manufactured the open set radio, nicknamed a “bread-board,” for which he is known today. Such radios were con-

structed on attractive wooden planks lacking a case, which allowed themto reveal their superior quality components. At one point, during the1920s, Kent’s company was considered to be the world’s radio leader.Kent’s radio show, The Atwater Kent Hour, was also one of the mediumsmost popular shows. During the 1930s Kent brought out about 15 newradio models each year, including consoles, compacts and auto radios.The Depression had a major adverse impact on Kent’s radio business, andafter trying cost-cutting measures, Kent closed his Philadelphia plant in1936, rather than sacrifice quality. Kent also was involved with develop-ing standards for the radio industry as an activist in the engineeringdepartment of the Radio Manufacturing Association (RMA), which laterbecame EIA. He also served on the RMA board of directors.

ules Steinberg was the guiding executive of the NorthAmerican Retail Dealers Association (NARDA), the industry’sleading retail association, during his tenure as its full-timeexecutive vice president. Involved in this association from thebeginning, Steinberg transformed NARDA from a small asso-

ciation into a major marketing force within the consumer electronicsindustry. He assisted in the success of the first Consumer ElectronicsShow (CES) by holding NARDA’s annual convention in New York duringthe 1970s. He is still involved in the consumer electronics industry as aretailing consultant and as a columnist for TWICE magazine.

enjiro Takayanagi was the first scientist to successfullytransmit and receive an image on a cathode ray tube. Hedeveloped the all-electronic television in 1935. A teacher at

Hamamatsu Technical High School in Japan, Takayanagi began his exper-iments during the late Taisho Era and conducted a successful publicdemonstration using the Braun tube system at a television conference atthe Tokyo branch of the Electrical Academy in 1928. Aside from hisinventions, Takayanagi contributed to the success of JVC by serving asone of its top electronics advisors. In 1959, he developed the first two-headed VTR and worked on the development of the VHS videocassettesystem. He received Japan’s national Order of Cultural Merit in 1981 forhis achievements in electronics engineering research.

oseph Tushinsky was an inventor, musician, optics innovator,writer and chairman of the board of Superscope Corp. andthe Marantz Co. He played a major role in developing thehigh-fidelity industry by becoming the American import-dis-tributor of Sony audio tape recorders in the late 1950s.

Tushinsky wrote several screenplays that were made into motion picturesin the 1940s and in 1943, went to Hollywood where, with his brotherIrving, developed a wide-screen movie projection process known asSuperscope, which was introduced in 1953 and helped to usher in the eraof wide-screen motion pictures. While marketing the Superscope processin Japan in 1957, Tushinsky met with Sony co-founder Akio Morita andnegotiated to obtain exclusive rights to sell Sony’s audio recorders in theU.S. Under a revised agreement, Sony America began marketing audiorecorders in 1974. In 1964 Superscope purchased the Marantz Co., andthe merged company under the Marantz name became a major marketerof high-fidelity stereo components. A collector of player pianos and theirpaper music rolls, in the 1970s Tushinsky developed an electronic versionthat was controlled by instructions recorded on a tape cassette. It wascalled the Piano Order Reproducing System. He retired as chairman ofMarantz in 1987, when he sold the company to Cobra/Dynascan.

ormer CEO of Circuit City Stores Inc., Alan Wurtzel ledCircuit City to be one of the nation’s largest retailers ofbrand-name consumer electronics and major appliances, aswell as personal computers and music software. His father,

Samuel S. Wurtzel, founded the retail company in 1,200 square feet ofrented space in a Richmond, Va. tire store in 1949. Samuel called thebusiness, Wards – an acronym for the names of his family members:Wurtzel, Alan, Ruth, David and Sam. Alan joined the company in 1966 asvice president for legal affairs. The company was renamed Circuit City inthe late 1970s. He served as CEO from 1972 to 1986 and chairman ofthe board from 1984 to 1994. From Delaplane, Va., Wurtzel served asvice-chairman of the board from 1994 to 2001. Circuit City was profiledas one of 11 companies in the best selling business book “Good to Great”written by Jim Collins. The book asked the question, “Can a good com-pany become a great company and if so, how?” The book examined “rareand truly great companies with a corporate culture that rigorously foundand promoted disciplined people to think and act in a disciplined man-ner.” He was a member of the Virginia State Board of Education from1991 to 1995, a trustee of Oberlin College and Virginia CommonwealthUniversity, and president of Operation Independence, a nonprofit organi-zation that supports Israel’s economic independence effort.
