Regular exercise reducesrisk of early death
New research shows that menand women who exerciseregularly reduce their risk of anearly death by 38% compared to
those that are sedentary. Forpeople with diabetes, high bloodpressure or smoking, which areknown as the most common riskfactors for heart diseases, thereduction in risk is even higherat 45%.
The findings from the US suggestthat efforts to get middle-agedpeople to exercise should payspecial attention to those who haverisk factors for cardiovasculardisease or a history of heart attackor stroke.
Its the first prospective of thisstudy to show that cardiovascularrisk doesnt lessen exercisesimpact on mortality risk. But itdid confirm that those who have ahigh heart risk are much morelikely to be sedentary, perhaps outof fear that exercising couldovertax them.
We found that across all rangesof cardiovascular risk, everybody got a benefit from
regular activity, but the biggestabsolute benefit, the biggestreduction in deaths, was amonghigh risk people, says the leadauthor Caroline Richardson.
If we discourage high populationfrom being active, then we havelost the chance to make a bigimpact, says Richardson. We
need to prevent people frombecoming part of that high riskgroup, by encouraging exerciseas a way to lower their weight, blood sugar and blood pressure. But at the same time we need toaddress those at high risk now.
Of the 9,611 people studied, 15.2per cent led sedentary livestyles, engaging in light activity such aswalking less than once a month.Another 13 per cent were classedas regularly active, taking part in
moderate activity to vigorousactivity at least three times aweek. The rest were grouped asoccasionally active.
The researchers also placedparticipants in one of thecardiovascular diesease riskgroups based on fivecharacteristics:smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, a history ofcoronary artery disease includingheart attack and angina, and ahistory of stroke. Individually,
each of these factors is knownto increase the risk of death, but the risk is higher for thosewith more than one r isk factor.
Although its impossible to tellwhich came first, the heart risk orthe lack of exercise, Richardsonnotes they go hand in hand
especially among people withexisting cardiovascular illnesseswho cling to outdated beliefs thatthey shouldnt exercise because itmight set off a heart attack.
In fact, she says, the benefit ofphysical activity for most highcardiovascular disease-riskindividuals probably outweighsthe r isks.
